This game needs a revival asap. It died for no good reason. It's actually a good asym. The mechanics are intersting and there's many different ways to play it. You can get punished literally for being too aggressive against the creature as in fighting against them so you don't always want it finding you but if you pick a character too slow and more for stealth you might not be able to outrun them. It's a nice balance sometimes and I'd actually recommend it over dbd. This game did not deserve to die.

White Noise 2 delivers an unsettling multiplayer horror experience that thrives on darkness, uncertainty, and the constant possibility of encountering something terrifying. Developed and published by Milkstone Studios, this asymmetric survival horror game places four investigators against a single player-controlled creature, creating an unpredictable competition between cooperation and predatory instincts. Unlike traditional horror games that depend heavily on scripted encounters, it generates tension through player decisions, environmental awareness, and psychological pressure. Its straightforward premise conceals an entertaining experience where even the smallest mistake can transform a promising investigation into a desperate struggle for survival. The investigator gameplay revolves around exploring ominous environments while searching for eight mysterious tapes scattered throughout each location. Armed primarily with flashlights, players must navigate unfamiliar surroundings while managing limited battery power and maintaining their sanity. Darkness becomes a genuine gameplay obstacle rather than merely an atmospheric effect, making every decision about movement and exploration potentially dangerous. Staying close to teammates improves survival prospects, but navigating together can become challenging when panic spreads through the group. The constant threat of separation creates an effective sense of vulnerability, especially when the creature begins exploiting isolated investigators. This combination of exploration, resource management, and cooperation makes the investigative experience surprisingly engaging despite its relatively simple objectives. Controlling the creature offers a completely different style of gameplay that emphasizes deception, positioning, and calculated aggression. Instead of searching for clues, the monster stalks investigators and attempts to eliminate them before they complete their mission. However, the creature is vulnerable to flashlight beams, preventing players from relying exclusively on direct attacks. Special abilities allow the monster to manipulate encounters, avoid dangerous exposure, and create opportunities to ambush unsuspecting victims. Summoning totems provides additional assistance in locating investigators, introducing another strategic element to the hunt. Successfully playing this role requires understanding human behavior and anticipating movement patterns. The resulting encounters can feel rewarding because victory often depends on outsmarting opponents rather than simply overpowering them. Character selection introduces meaningful variety through different attributes and specializations. Investigators possess strengths that influence movement, stealth, exploration, and equipment efficiency, allowing players to select characters that complement their preferred strategies. Flashlight choices further influence survival by affecting how effectively players illuminate their surroundings and defend themselves against supernatural threats. Unlockable content provides additional motivation to continue playing, although the progression system remains relatively modest. One particularly thoughtful feature allows eliminated investigators to return as ghosts and continue helping surviving teammates. This prevents early elimination from becoming completely frustrating while preserving the cooperative spirit of the experience. It also creates opportunities for defeated players to contribute valuable information during the remaining investigation. Atmospherically, the game demonstrates how effective horror can emerge from limited visibility and carefully constructed uncertainty. Its environments feature gloomy locations, unsettling architecture, and oppressive darkness that encourages players to imagine threats beyond their immediate surroundings. Although the graphical presentation is relatively simple and some environmental details appear dated, the lighting effects contribute significantly to the overall experience. Flashlights create narrow pockets of visibility surrounded by threatening shadows, reinforcing the feeling that danger could emerge from almost anywhere. Sound design complements this approach through disturbing ambient effects, ominous noises, and sudden audio disturbances. The strongest moments occur when players hear something suspicious but cannot determine whether the creature is nearby. Multiplayer interaction remains the game's greatest strength. Cooperative communication can transform a disorganized group into an effective investigative team, while poor coordination often produces entertaining disasters. Unexpected ambushes, frantic escapes, and accidental separations generate memorable situations that rarely unfold identically between matches. The replay feature adds another enjoyable dimension by allowing players to examine completed encounters and observe how different decisions influenced the outcome. Watching investigators unknowingly approach danger or become hopelessly disoriented can be amusing after the tension has passed. Additional features such as achievements, trading cards, and Steam Cloud support contribute to the overall package, although the central attraction remains the competitive horror experience. Nevertheless, several shortcomings limit its long-term appeal. The repeated objective of collecting tapes can eventually become predictable, particularly for players seeking substantial narrative development or diverse mission structures. Character differences and changing environments provide some variety, but the fundamental gameplay loop remains largely unchanged. Multiplayer balance can also fluctuate considerably depending on participant experience. Skilled monsters may overwhelm inexperienced investigators, while highly coordinated teams can make successful hunting difficult. Another concern is the game's dependence on finding other participants. Although single-player functionality exists, the most compelling encounters generally involve human opponents, making organized sessions with friends preferable when public matchmaking becomes unreliable. Players expecting a substantial story campaign or extensive progression may consequently find the experience less satisfying. Regarding Steam Deck compatibility, White Noise 2 currently has an Unknown compatibility classification, meaning Valve has not officially confirmed it as Verified or Playable. The game supports controllers, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers, which is encouraging for handheld play. However, controller support alone does not guarantee full Steam Deck functionality, and compatibility adjustments may be necessary. Its multiplayer nature also makes a stable internet connection important. Players interested in experiencing the game on Valve's handheld should therefore approach compatibility with reasonable caution until more definitive testing becomes available. Overall, White Noise 2 is an enjoyable example of asymmetric horror that successfully combines cooperative exploration with competitive monster hunting. Its greatest achievements lie in creating authentic tension through limited resources, unpredictable opponents, and the constant fear of becoming separated from teammates. The distinctive monster abilities, useful ghost mechanics, and entertaining replay system provide additional personality to an otherwise straightforward concept. Although repetitive objectives, modest visuals, and multiplayer population concerns prevent it from achieving greater excellence, the experience remains compelling when enjoyed with a dedicated group. For horror enthusiasts who appreciate strategic teamwork, atmospheric exploration, and unpredictable encounters, it offers plenty of memorable moments. Rating: 8/10
