Zero Parades: For Dead Spies

1 / 8

The largest problem I have with ZERO PARADES is something that is ultimately revealed to be the main pillar of the game. Where there are seemingly a lot of choices to make in ZP, between your character builds, your choices, your passed and failed skill checks, I actually found that ZP seems to respect your choices slightly less than its predecessor. For a game with a lot of "choices", that kind of hurts. It's difficult to explain this without spoilers, but I'll try to keep it nonspecific: Many of the "major" events in the story don't particularly matter. You can fail virtually every check except ones that are literally required to advance the story and it won't permanently affect much. I was expecting that getting caught and photographed or spilling everything to an interrogator would have negative outcomes, but it didn't. The endings of the game fall into three sequences that lead to nearly identical outcomes. Though I appreciate that there were different methods made for the finale, they feel the same. Where Disco Elysium's mystery didn't result in any earth-shattering reveal - at least, not with the murder itself - the game really felt like it was *about* Harry. Your choices effectively made him what he was, and the game centered itself around those political perspectives that he could adopt. That same political backdrop is behind ZP, but you only get to interact with it to a limited degree. Ultimately, Herschel fulfills the same role regardless. There is no "your Herschel". I understand that the debriefing following the finale sequence is meant to feel unsatisfying, following everything that's happened to Herschel, but it also feels narratively hollow. There's very few choices the game will acknowledge at the end: if you killed a certain NPC earlier in the game, and how "loud" your finale was. No other items, subplot resolutions, allies, or tasks completed really make a difference. Sure, sometimes, the journey is the destination, but for a CRPG to recognize so little in the finale hits poorly. You could point out that even in DE, your actions only have so much impact on the finale, but even just the debriefing with Kim made it *feel* like the game was paying attention, whereas ZP just doesn't even do that much. Not a word with the side characters, and hardly an interesting word with your operator. It's a shame, because there are a number of interesting ideas in the game that I like a lot. There are different ways to solve different problems throughout the game, though they still often times lead to similar outcomes. The voice actors for most of the characters are great, though honestly, I couldn't stand the incredibly monotonous inflection of the main character's narrator. The world and the city are well crafted, with many fascinating side characters to delve into. I will say, though, where Disco Elysium often drew a great deal of entertainment value with its absurdity and silliness, I don't really feel that Zero Parades does this as effectively. Where it did hit is with the more serious ideas of struggle, gloom, and apathy that the characters experience. Where the world of Disco Elysium felt like seeing light despite the pathetic state of the world, Zero Parades' world sucks to live in, and the efforts to change it don't get you anywhere either. Death, suicide, depression, paranoia... it's dripping in practically every major character you'll come across, and it did make me feel something for the NPCs who trudge on in a world only expecting more of it. With all that being said, I came away not feeling thrilled with the time I spent on Zero Parades. Where there is style and philosophy in every conversation in ZA/UM's writing, it also amounts to so little. Sure, you can say that's the point - the nihilism and the feeling of wanting more is the theme of the game - but I find it a rather convenient way to justify a unsatisfying journey. Unfortunately, I'm just a little reluctant to recommend this game.

I'm a huge Disco Elysium fan. This might be an unpopular take, but to me Zero Parades is a tighter, sharper exploration of many of the ideas I loved from DE. Zero Parades is every bit as weird and surprising as DE, but it strips away some of DE's slower, clumsier mechanics. I connected with the characters more, felt more propelled by the plot, and I loved the game's climactic scenes.

Most underrated game of the year due to the drama surrounding the studio. The culmination of the drama, however, is that ZA/UM formed the ZA/UM Workers' Alliance in October 2025, marking the first officially recognized workplace union in the UK video game industry. So, there are plenty of reasons to still root for this game. Especially since it is as good as Disco Elysium, if not better. A game about capitalism, bootlegs, and the mysterious impacts of subtle, esoteric technology. A lot of the plot can even be seen as a response to the critical success of Disco Elysium and the apologia of replicating the past. The mechanics have improved, the map exploration feels more concise, and the characters can break your heart. If you want this genre to continue, this game is a must-have. (also bonus points for referencing fnords)

zero parades is a profoundly melancholic masterpiece, capturing the grinding, dehumanising cost of espionage. to be clear from the outset: although it deserves to be judged entirely on its own terms, this game surpasses disco elysium. zero parades dissects ideological failure with surgical precision, showing how vast political structures can devour the very people they claim to serve. trapped between the rigid authoritarianism of the Superbloc, the transnational greed of EMTERR, and the terrifying cultural imperialism of La Luz, the narrative becomes a tragedy of institutions consuming individuals. each power structure offers its own vision of order, progress, or liberation, yet each demands that human beings become expendable in service of something larger. larger, yet ultimately self-perpetuating. elevating it all is an immaculate soundtrack that balances despair with cold-blooded badassery. the score channels cynical, world-weary detachment through a lingering, side-eye swagger, making you feel like the most lethal, yet expendable, operative in the room. beneath that lies a constant knowledge that those employing you will discard you the moment you cease to be useful, while Hershel's guilt of abandoning her friends threaten to drag her under all over again. “can any system of organisation emerge that will not devour itself alive if its principles are carried through to their logical conclusion? that is the central question of this book.”

No, this is not Disco Elysium and does not trancend in writing as Disco does. Regardless, it's an amazingly well written game, completely enjoyable and recomendable.
