Aliens vs. Predator

1 / 8

Bringing the legendary war between two of science-fiction's most popular characters to FPS fans, AvP delivers three outstanding single player campaigns and provides untold hours of unique 3-way multiplayer gaming.

Experience distinctly new and thrilling first person gameplay as you survive, hunt and prey in the deadly jungles and swamps surrounding the damned colony of Freya's Prospect.

As the Marine, you'll experience a claustrophobic and terrifying experience where light is your friend, but there's never enough. However, the United States Marine Corps are humanity's last line of defense, and as such they are armed to the teeth with the very latest in high explosive and automatic weaponry.

As the Predator, you will stalk from the shadows and from above, passing athletically through the treetops to ambush your victims. Although equipped with an array of powerful, exotic weapons and tracking equipment, honor ultimately dictates that you must get in close and take your trophies face to face.

As the most deadly species in the universe, the Alien offers you the chance to play as the very stuff of nightmares - the monster in the dark swarming forward with countless others, jaws like a steel trap and claws like blades.

Play all sides off against each other in a series of unique 3-way online modes and go tooth-to-claw-to-pulse rifle in the reinvention of one of multiplayer gaming's defining moments.

AvP uses the Steam Cloud to store game stats and skill information, which is then used for matchmaking purposes.

I risked losing the original AvP during a gopnik encounter. A gang of 4 approached me and my friend on our way home with a fresh haul. They asked about my game and I, an impeded fool, provided one enthusiastic preview. Got kinda insulted when they only took our change and my friend's FIFA. Not our first rodeo! Previously, a junkie robbed us as we went to a gaming store, threatening to cut us into pieces with a chainsaw. He swore he had one right around the corner. We didn't buy it, but he was a tall adult and we were kids with kind faces. That's the wisdom my friend shared, about the faces. Since then we did our best to look evil and be bad to comply. Speaking of bad guys, I was so lucky to keep my AvP, no contemporaries did those justice. The Marine experience was scary good, the Predator - as impressive as disappointing. I'll address it later. Beaten an innovative Alien campaign 10 times, then took my Xeno skills online to MPlayer, using a modem for the first time. Lagged hard, though somehow did well and was invited to join a clan. Thought they hacked me after they made me download a new fad called ICQ. My desktop started talking, which scared me off the internet for years. Here goes the shortest, dumbest e-sports career in history. 2010 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Despite good sales, calling AvP 3 mid was a consensus among the journos. I was gullible, decided to skip the game despite loving the first one. Made by the same people from Rebellion, by the way. Most say Monolith's sequel was peak. As much as it sucks to badmouth the dead legend, I think AvP 2 had no personality. Its Marine campaign was easy and bland, Alien's exploits were annoying due to the over-reliance on turrets, and the Predator's fell off early. I'm still pissed by how high its hardware requirements were given the washed-out look. In contrast, AvP 3 takes you to flavour town. I loved the authentic creep-covered bases followed by epic Aztec temples, the gore, and the industrial gigantism. Dropping you amid such outlandish beauty, the game does its damndest to terrorise you by painting scenes with colourful lightning, shadowplay, and iconic Alien subliminals like cables that resemble a tail hanging from the ceiling, doors hissing menacingly, steel beams moaning under pressure. While the motion sensor anxiously beeps. It was designed to keep you safe, not make you feel that way. Before I blew more bubbles on that thang, let's admit there were reasons behind its smeared reception. AvP 3 tried too hard to present itself as "cinematic". It was (is) all the rage among AAA publishers, everyone else was already fatigued. This one overdid it to the point of parody. Asthmatic sprint, anally scripted levels, console parroting in the form of gigantic UI and the stupid necessity to hold buttons instead of pressing. Not to mention the constant chatter written to seem badass like the movies, yet ending up tacky. The plot itself is fine, I'm talking periphery. The game drags you around like a fish on a hook, its rude insistence on following the objective markers is infuriating. Running and falling, Walmart Vasquez, just let me soak in the atmosphere and pick up that trendy audio log first, jeez! Fortunately, it mostly concerns the Marine, and I wasn't as annoyed as I let on. Today I look at these quirks dispassionately, having many indie alternatives to soften the blow. Besides, it's a small price to pay for such a fast-paced rollercoaster with little to no filler. No Time to Bleed The Marine is sluggish, the Xenos are nasty and swarming. You throw a flare hoping to get a glimpse of one - bam, more than you bargained for cover the walls and ceilings like roaches! As you stay bemused by how fluent their movement is, they outmanoeuvre your ass and eat your face. You gotta play smart, minding positioning and expecting ambushes. Enemy lethality combined with a checkpoint system creates suspense. Saves aren't rare, but minutes last longer when the action is so dense. The guns are hella fine, faithful and packing a punch. The double-barrel is a song, blowing off limbs with a crunch. Dismemberment is a staple of the series. Shooting one's head off clean is a special feeling, the way a Xeno's legs pop off, how it crawls towards you afterwards is a pleasing sight. Not sure if you can shoot off individual phalanges here, though. Other things to admire: facehuggers don't instakill you, and you know how androids were a pain in every AvP? Here, they're used sparingly. Sadly, the Alien doesn't get to start as a baby and chew its way out of a person. A mature hunk, you're a super-sonic glass cannon right off the bat. Things turn tough quickly. Enemies aren't made of paper like they used to be, teaching you to isolate victims instead of rushing in recklessly. The element of surprise is your greatest weapon, you gotta rely on finishers instead of throwing hands. Varied and brutal, they leave you vulnerable, so make sure no one can hear them scream. Yeah, here the monster isn't overpowered. I believe that balancing attempts were the main reason behind the cheesy turret spam in AvP 2. It's over with, albeit, Xeno's gameplay is still high-risk, as rapid as it is tactical, causing the kind of catharsis only wearing a skin of the most dangerous predator outside of Roblox can provide. Fluently running across walls and ceilings without vomiting is an fun skill to master. When you do, you feel unstoppable, skewering normiemorphs left and right. At that point the campaign cuts your rampage short. Don't be sad, it's Predator time! Our boy has the terrifying presence he deserves. At least in his own campaign, being a wimpy mini-boss elsewhere. All bosses are meh, but it's common. What's uncommon is that I enjoyed a Predator campaign! The only good part in both prequels was the beginning when you hunted humans. There, I hated the toy pistol shooting a goofy globe in an impotent arc, a weak wristblade, a snotty plasmacaster that ran out of energy in 2 shots, expensive cloaking... had to constantly blast the goofy disco ball! The only apt piece, a speargun, ran out before you could shoot half the phalanx on one hand. But what I hated the most was the near-infinite Alien respawn, which forced you to slowly grind them down or speedrun like a wuss. That fussy gameplay sucked. AvP 3 has none of that nonsense. Staying hardcore, it finally gives you a proper power fantasy. Against humans it's an aesthetic hunt, against Aliens - a messy, visceral beat 'em up incorporating signature weapons, now well-implemented, with ultra-violent glory kills tearing the sexy beasts limb from limb. Ever wondered how a Xeno would react if you catch its inner mouth like a cat's tongue? Here you go, for honour or whatnot. Quite a Specimen All campaigns reuse prominent locations, but recontextualise those for different gameplay styles. The Marine gets suffocated by dilapidated corridors (and nagging), the Alien enjoys his winding vents and upside-down rooms with hanging chains, while the Predator's missions are full of verticality and a gory pathos of the warrior ethos. Campaign structure is liberal, you can swap characters between missions. Nice, but still played in order since it's a more coherent way to digest the story. I guess the option is there for the impatient. That said, you won't need patience. Each campaign starts a bit slowly to tutorialise you, then escalates at breakneck speed. The encounter design remains exciting throughout, holdout and escape sequences are among the best in the business. Stealth is FUN, so Predator and Alien campaigns convey their characters like never before. I think the Marine had the best run in AvP 1 thanks to the oppressive atmosphere, however, that still leaves us with an entry that improved on the formula in defiance of its 2010 baggage. I wouldn't call it pure, but it's quite a specimen. My curator Big Bad Mutuh

What a hidden little gem! I wasn’t aware of this game and had only recently wishlisted it. Picked it up on sale with absolutely no expectations. I was thinking maybe some L4D-style game? But no — it has a solid single-player campaign and is a must-play for all Alien fans. It has the vibes of an old-school FPS like Quake, etc., but set in the Alien universe. The atmosphere and sounds from Aliens really add to the immersion. Highly recommended!

This review is based on 100% completion and 18.1 hours of gameplay. Recommendation: Would I recommend this game? Absolutely. This is still one of my all-time favourites. Having played it back in the day on Xbox and now, all these years later, on PC, it's still a great game to pick up. However, the multiplayer is dead, so it's pretty much a no-go unless you have a premade group to play with. The campaigns are what make this game worth picking up, and it's one of those games I'd love to see remade and brought forward with the times. It's one of the best Aliens games out there, with great campaigns and a multiplayer that was a lot of fun back in the day. For its age, the graphics still hold up pretty well. The dark and gritty environments fit the Aliens setting perfectly, with some good use of colours, textures and lighting throughout. The sound design is also a big part of the experience, with the older-school sound effects and audio fitting the atmosphere really well. Nothing here is going to blow you away by modern standards, but it all works together to create the atmosphere you'd expect from an Aliens game. The narrative, or the writing for this, I think is great overall. While it does have a few moments that are like "what was that?" or "that doesn't make much sense", I do think it's decent. What this game has is 3 separate campaigns for humans, Predators and Aliens. What's really cool about these is that they are all intertwined with each other at different points in time, so even though you are going through some of the same areas, it doesn't feel all that bad as you are doing different things and playing from different perspectives, which is pretty awesome. From the Marine figuring out what's going on and carrying out your mission, to an Alien being a typical Alien menace, to Predators being absolute units as always, it's really interesting and cool to play the different perspectives, and it all ties together to fill some gaps in the story that each campaign might miss out on. I'll leave it there, but I do think this is my favourite part of the entire game. The gameplay is great. It's a little clunky being an older game, and there is a good bit of jank with the melee, but everything else is decent. Playing as each different species through the campaigns gives you completely different playstyles. The Marine has their guns and grenades, so plays more like a traditional shooter. The Predator has their different visions and gadgets and feels like a hunter, jumping from tree to tree and roof to roof in stealth, which is really cool. The Aliens have the ability to move across different surfaces and can play stealthily or very aggressively like the Aliens would. Suffice to say, the gameplay is really fun and engaging. Unfortunately, for multiplayer, this game is dead, so finding games is pretty much a non-starter. Unless you are going in with premade teams just to have fun amongst friends, this is not going to be a game where you are able to experience the multiplayer properly. Which is sad, because this was a lot of fun back in the day with all the different modes. Overall, the performance of the game for me was good, and I had no issues at all. However, that was not the same for a mate who was unable to log onto the multiplayer side of the game, as when he tried it would just brick his PC. He did eventually find a solution, but it is something to be aware of as this may happen to you. Overall, this is a good pick-up for the campaigns and well worth checking out, but only during a sale. The game is old and goes on sale often, so just hold out until one of those before picking this up. Achievements: The achievements are a bit of a mixed bag. Most of them are straightforward, but there are a number of multiplayer achievements that require other players, with one requiring a minimum of 7 people. There are also a number of collectables and missable or semi-missable achievements across the three campaigns. I'd recommend doing two runs of each campaign, with your first run focusing on the miscellaneous achievements and collectables, followed by Nightmare difficulty once you're familiar with the encounters. When it comes to the campaigns, the only difficult achievement will be the Nightmare difficulty achievements, as there are no checkpoints during the mission, so if you die you will need to start from the beginning of that mission. While not overly difficult for avid gamers, this can be challenging to some. Something I'd highly recommend is doing all achievements tied to a faction in one go. For example, I did all the Marine campaign achievements together, doing the first run playing through the game and getting all the miscellaneous achievements during that run, then immediately doing my Nightmare run. This just ensures that the encounters are fresh in your mind when you do it, so it makes it a little easier. Also be aware that there are some things that will insta-kill you, like exploding canisters, your grenade launcher and the Praetorian's acid spit. If the normal Aliens are too close when they die, their acid can also sometimes kill you instantly, so just be careful. Boss fights are not that hard, just take everything slow and clear things out. For the Marine campaign, all 15 achievements took me around 6.9 hours to get done. For the Predator's 13 achievements, they took about 4 hours, and the Alien's 10 achievements took about 4 as well. So all campaigns took me around 14.9 hours, give or take, because Steam's tracking is not always 100% accurate. So it's not too long, with the other 4 hours being spent on multiplayer. The only other achievements you need to be concerned about are the multiplayer ones. Thankfully, while the descriptions do say they need to be done in ranked matches, they can now be completed in private games instead. Almost all multiplayer achievements can be boosted in private games with 1 other person or done solo. However, there are 2 achievements that require more than 1 person, those being "The Six Pack", which needs 6 other people for a total of 7 people including yourself, and "The Uninfected", which requires 4 people to start the mode. Everything is really quick, especially if you are boosting. For example, 1 match of Deathmatch to 10 kills with a boosting partner took about 2 minutes and 30 seconds, so these can go really quickly and are not hard at all to do if you have the people needed. The game is unfortunately dead, so finding a team to get this done can be a challenge. You may want to make a group or join some others, and maybe make a post looking for players to help out. There are 2 achievements which require you to earn EXP in ranked matches. However, there is a handy little glitch which allows you to boost this all out very quickly in the Marines campaign during the first mission. There is a great Steam guide on how to do it by Ivanhom,so make sure to check that out to save you the headache and the time that would be needed to find the matches as well as earn the EXP. I left a comment in the guide saying how long it took me, which was 50 deaths for the first one and 149 deaths for the second, all of which took me around 30 minutes total to get done. Don't ask questions on how it works because I have absolutely no clue. It is some magic which I definitely don't understand but love to see. Overall, the only achievements that are going to be a big concern are the multiplayer ones, as you will need others for them. But besides those, this is a really enjoyable 100%. Being a fan of the entire Alien lore, I can`t quite say this game filled all my inner expectations. It feels like the game is trying to show everything it has by giving the player three separate story lines, each with its own unique mechanics. The controls feel nice and simple, the atmosphere feels great, and somehow it`s still missing something. It`s hard to call this one of the best games out there, but it does let you feel some new emotions and try yourself out in different roles. Overall, the game isn`t bad, the story exists and holds up decently. Being able to play as both the Alien and the Predator earns a separate thumbs up on its own. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ (8/10)
