Arcade Paradise

I truly think this game deserves more attention then it has received. I had a blast on my playthrough of it! There are so many different arcade games to play, and I found most of them to be fun to play. The gameplay loop of running the laundromat to earn money to build a bigger and better arcade and then playing games in your own arcade was very enjoyable for me. I think if you like arcade games then you should absolutely give this game a shot!

Buen juego pero necesita ajustes, lo de la lavandería es tedioso y las mejoras con libras son repetitivas y aburridas.

I really like this game, it fun, has a nice story and enjoyed playing it. But it has issues. For one it filled with a lot of small annoying bugs, and some of the side stuff you can do for bonus sorties and lore, get really annoying and harder the more you play. The soundtrack is nice with a few tracks that stick out (like the main theme "arcade paradise"), The graphics are simple, which work for this type of game. But there the lack of customisation for your arcade leaves a lot to be desired. This game could be a lot more, but is good for what it cost. DLC is worth it if you want more arcade games in your arcade. Took me just under 60 hours to get all achievements, thankfully no dlc is needed for any achievements.

A sentimentalist is simply one who wants to have the luxury of an emotion without paying for it. We think we can have our emotions for nothing. We cannot. The game is dripping with character and good vibes, the story has a bittersweet Gone Home feel that's a perfect counterbalance to the mindless saccharine of arcade minigames, which all adds up to a pretty sentimental nostalgia bomb (if you're there for it), but with enough modern design that it doesn't feel dusty or maudlin. Unfortunately, it "ends," if I can use that word, in a big letdown, not because there is anything "missing" but because the game creates expectations that it can't really pay off. What becomes obvious in hindsight is that the minigames are little more than pastiche and only remain appealing long enough to punctuate the storyline. Each minigame masterfully evokes the titles it is an homage to, and even the framing device apes a more contemporary genre of retail-simulators and virtual arcade emulators. But although it looks like an ersatz collection of classics, it's actually more like a weekend game design competition folded into a visual novel. As storytelling intermezzi, these minigames are actually quite effective, at least as effective as fetch quests or the illusion of choice in conventional narrative adventures, but because Arcade Paradise doesn't have the stones to delete your arcade after the story is over, it leaves you alone there to futz around and find out that what you might have thought were full games are scarcely more than props. The pacing is such that you will experience the climax of the story (~20 hours in) shortly after you have spent perhaps a half hour with each minigame, unlocking them one by one. Then the credits roll and you are left in your fully stocked arcade, sitting with the ambiguity of whether anything you can do now will trigger anything new and interesting (answer: no). Lingering to collect all the remaining items is satisfying enough, and you can use this time to beat a few of the more interesting games. But if you press forward for dozens of hours to try and 100% it, it becomes clear quickly that these loving imitations don't have any of the satisfying depth of the arcade classics; most of the remaining achievements amount to pure grind or the perfection of a single micro-twitch (like the TWO near identical woodcutting games). To add insult to injury, many of the later achievements are buggy and may not trigger at all in some circumstances. The real arcade classics were products of a unique combination of commercial incentives that no longer exists. They had to be enticing and give a first-time player just enough time (perhaps 5 minutes) to make you feel like you weren't shamelessly ripped off, before quickly and relentlessly ramping up difficulty to force anyone without sufficient mastery off the machine, unless they paid up. So most players never saw more than the first couple of levels, or they brute-forced the game with quarters, in either case getting no real understanding of what the game had to offer. But since a significant source of revenue came from regular, experienced players, these games had also to offer satisfying and ever more challenging late game play with every new release, which was not a zero-marginal-cost piece of code, but a heavy, expensive physical machine that required commercial investment and maintenance, which ensured rigorous playtesting and revenues were closely tied to player performance and engagement; but unlike a casino machine, the reward was not money, but mere personal satisfaction and peer prestige. Creating this sense of satisfaction at the limit of profitability was the engineering problem that these machines solved, and for which there is no incentive in the modern games economy, where game revenues need have no relation to whether a game is even played at all, and where the main measure of value is the volume of "content," to be "consumed." The quarters (read: microtransactions) of today do not reward a player's skill, but actually disincentivize it. What you get here is mostly a collection of first levels that seems to be made by, or for, people who never actually appreciated these games the way the 1CC crowd did, but nevertheless loved the sights and sounds, feelings and social function of the place. Perhaps it's amusingly ironic that this game, in the end, sends the completionists up a blind alley to get lost in a diminishing potter's field of dubious achievements. Like it or not, the vast majority of modern gamers do not want to engage with the concise and demanding design principles that defined the coin-economy games that populated the arcade paradises (and infernos) of yesteryear, but they do enjoy feeling as if they had, or (mis)remembering what might have been. This game is perfect for them, or for anyone who can accept it on its own terms, and seek elsewhere the genuine experience of arcade classics. Virtually all those old games can now be found (somewhere) for free or next to nothing, more accessible than they've ever been. And this game might just make you want to play them (again).

Nice little game which is in fact a collection of revisited old school arcade games. You get around 25/30 mini games if you don't buy any of the DLCs, some of them are very good, some of them are meh but overall they're pretty nice, well polished and with good controls. You can play them with both mouse and keyboard or a gamepad aoording to your preferences. The whole laundry part at the beginning can be a bit of a chore, but it is intended that way and after a relatively short while you can ignore this part of the game entirely. Mind you, if you're going for 100% achievements some of them can be a little bit grindy!

I hit credits around 23 hours so use that as you will. This was a fun love letter to a nostalgic time that I never experienced. Its part cozy shop sim and part love letter to classic arcade games. The creativity to include so many homages to the original game cabinets was great. If either of those two details interest you then this game will be a fun experience. If not then avoid or buy on sale in case you're curious later. Also shoutout to the fake band Bruise Machine for that great shoegaze song on the jukebox.

This game was fun when I got it on Epic Games for free but now I've bought it and came back there are glaring issues that make the game feel cheap and slow. It's a very long slog that is fun for people like me who can be given a mindless task for a few hours and thrive but if you wanna progress it's best not to play the games and do the Cleaning / Laundry, but if you wanna have fun you play the arcade games, Barkanoid is amazing but its Arkanoid with Dog theming and a great pun but, it's Arkanoid. The original games range from fun to basically a brand new slog, though there's at least little bit for everyone, as the nature of an arcade! This game is egregious in many other aspects, The Menus are Painful and the VR game makes it worse. There is no crosshair. Like there is buried in settings but its SO BIG and not representative of your grabbing zone. Mouse turning is weird and this game is even more of a slog on controller. This game can be fun at times but yeah, I did just ignore everything I thought wasn't fun and I'd recommend that if you're not having fun but then it's not a 20$ game, get this on a Summer sale or some deeper discount and you'll have fun, I did for a while.
