Crusader Kings II
The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches.
Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe.
Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King? Crusader Kings II explores one of the defining periods in world history in an experience crafted by the masters of Grand Strategy. Medieval Europe is brought to life in this epic game of knights, schemes, and thrones... Key features:

Come for the medieval strategy, stay for the family drama, betrayals and completely unhinged dynasties. Incredibly deep, endlessly replayable and still one of the best grand strategy games ever made.

still stands up to this day, thanks in part to it's intuitive and modifiable ui. feels overall more difficult and complex than ck3, with more emergent gameplay features, like more events and a borderline schizophrenic traits system (losing traits all the time, gaining traits from random events or schemes and seemingly developing traits passively depending on how you play). ck3 definitely has it beat on the ruler designer (tho i almost prefer the 2d portrait system to ck3's freakish 3d generated gremlins, as i think it adds to overall feel of the game), and ck3 adds more to artifacts, religion, and culture systems, but the technology system in ck2 is also pretty neat. also merchant republics

One of a kind strategy game. Don't be put off by the many DLCs, if you are new, just try the base game. And only ever buy DLCs on the frequent discounts.

Crusader Kings 2 was innovative at the time of its release and it still holds up as a masterpiece. The Crusader Kings games are unlike other Paradox games as they’re less about statistics and painting the map. They’re more about emergent roleplay. The whole gameplay revolves around dynastic inheritance and character development, befitting the political landscape of the medieval world. CK2 is more difficult to master than CK3. CK2 places more emphasis on inheritance law, technology, and other institutional systems, while CK 3 is more streamlined towards roleplay. Because inheritance is very difficult to strategise around, you may get King Lear’d often, with kingdoms splitting between different successors. CK2 holds up as a game that’s still great to play even following the release of CK3 due to its many years of development resulting in multiple DLCs with additional content not yet featured in CK3. I think the challenge is greater in CK2 due to its more complex systems and the game also features greater depth for events.

A real conversation: "How do you play CKII?" "I don't know." "Don't you have nearly 90 hours in it on Stream?" "Yeah, what's your point?" This game is impossible but I love it. It's a sickness. I have no idea what I'm doing. Cannot be played without tutorials. And I use cheats. Who cares if I have fun.

> Finally Play This Game > Play The Byzatines Since it seems to be easy (Im Trash At The Game) > Conquer Small Neighbors > Get a Massive faction to depose me > Lose > Try over and over again like 5 times > Waste hours upon Days worth of time trying to understand how this damn game works > Still trash 11 / 10 peak game highly enjoyed even without DLCs, Mods like Elder Kings and After The End are really fun, hopefully planning on playing other Paradox games in the future including keeping playing on this one

**130+ hours in, and I still find myself coming back to Crusader Kings II.** What I love most about CK2 is its incredible historical essence. As someone who's a huge history nerd, there's something genuinely fascinating about being able to play as historical characters I've read about in books and then completely change the course of their lives—and sometimes the fate of entire empires. You can start as a relatively insignificant ruler and, generations later, have your dynasty controlling massive parts of the world. Every campaign feels like you're creating your own alternate history. The **political, family, and bureaucratic systems** are extremely complex at first, and there are times when the sheer amount of information can feel overwhelming. But that's exactly what makes the game so much fun. Managing marriages, alliances, succession, vassals, factions, rivalries, assassinations, rebellions, and family drama makes you feel less like you're simply playing a strategy game and more like you're actually ruling a medieval dynasty. Half the time, your biggest enemy isn't another kingdom—it's your own family. Interestingly, the **combat system is extremely simple**, which I think works in the game's favor. The real strategy happens before the battle: building your army, choosing commanders, managing your realm, and making sure you actually have the resources to fight a war. The **technology system** is another feature I really enjoy. It gives you a constant reason to keep developing your realm instead of simply conquering everything in sight. Watching your kingdom gradually advance and become more powerful over generations is incredibly satisfying. And then there are the **Great Works and massive structures**. Building something monumental and eventually seeing it become a permanent part of your realm gives you a genuine sense of accomplishment. It's one of those little systems that makes you feel like your ruler actually left a mark on history. What makes CK2 special, though, is how unpredictable every playthrough can become. A perfectly planned campaign can fall apart because your heir dies, your kingdom gets divided by succession, your wife betrays you, your vassals revolt, or your idiot son decides that becoming a tyrant is a fantastic idea. 😂 The game doesn't just give you objectives—it **creates stories**. Some of my most memorable moments weren't victories or conquests, but completely ridiculous situations that somehow emerged from the game's systems. After 130+ hours, I'd say Crusader Kings II is less about *winning* and more about **creating a dynasty, watching it rise, watching it fall, and somehow convincing yourself that you'll do better next time.** **If you're a history nerd who enjoys strategy, politics, dynasty-building, and creating your own alternate history, CK2 is an absolute masterpiece.**
