Dead Rising

1 / 6

Frank West, a freelance photojournalist on the hunt for the scoop of a lifetime, pursues a juicy lead to a small suburban town only to find that it is being overrun by zombies! He escapes to the local shopping mall thinking it will be a bastion of safety, but it turns out to be anything but. It's a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but with full reign over an entire shopping center, Frank can utilize anything to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.

This action horror game brings new meaning to the phrase "retail hell." Dead Rising uses a dynamic real-time system in which time continues to pass whether Frank is actively engaged or remains stationary. For example, though they move slowly during the day, zombies become stronger and faster when the sun sets and make it even more difficult to survive at night. The unprecedented swarms come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population.

These former humans retain some memory of their previous lives and it is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Other survivors are encountered along the way and helping them can provide valuable clues as to what has happened. Key features:

Huge Environments – Expansive indoor and outdoor areas of the mall provide a variety of different locations to explore!

Swarm Technology – Allows an unprecedented amount of enemies on screen at once resulting in nonstop, pulse-pounding action.

Intense Gore and Vibrant Realism.

Anything in the mall is at Frank's disposal

Move environmental objects like table umbrellas or mall benches.

Snatch items from different stores to use as weapons, including golf clubs, lawnmowers, fry pans and more!

Chow down on various "mall food" to recover health.

Real Time System – Key story elements happen at certain times whether Frank is on the spot or not. Don't miss any important events or opportunities!

Use Frank's Photojournalistic Skills – Capture the insanity on film; the better the shot, the better the reward will be!

NPCs – Help players navigate through the zombie-infested mall.

Solve the Mystery – Why has the entire town turned into the undead?

Additional Features & Functionalities:

Save System – Now supports up to five save slots

Controller Support – Native Xbox 360/Xbox One and PlayStation DualShock 4 controller support with matching button icons

this game is the GOAT, genuinely. although its tough as ♥♥♥♥ and will knock your block off through the survivors, psychos and whatnot the game comes into its own as a fun sandbox

It's easy to forget this game is ACTUALLY 20 years old because it's just aged so. damn. well. However, that fact smacks you right in the face when a survivor dies to like two zombies because they can't figure out how to pathfind around it and Otis keeps blowing up your damn phone every three seconds. I know those two things are made better in the remaster, but why bother when almost everything else is worse

I sincerely respect a game that takes place in a shopping mall. This concept doesn't get used a lot for stories. Thank you Capcom for making my fantasy happen.

some of the worst npc ai i've ever seen in a video game (and even for its time probably) but it's a fun game

And it all started with Willamette. Little obvious thing and running trend by now I will review this spoiler-free as possible which means I won't talk much about the story aside that it is pretty good for what it is. With this game being polished and cleaned up for PC with a 2016 remastered version it held up shockingly well, unfortunately it's still a capcom console port and there's a glaring bug that needs manual fixing either with a Trainer or Hexcoding; anytime a kill is detected the game freezes for a frame, and this can stack leading to lengthy pauses when killing hordes or psychos - obviously a massive problem, obviously capcom decided this was less important to fix than just making DRDR instead despite it being 2 characters of hexcode to change with no repercussions on the game elsewise. That said with that little touch of elbow grease, that is the only real issue and the rest of the game runs shockingly well on top of preserving what the 2006 game was in spirit to the fullest. That starts with the good things - Combat is the classic pick up everything that looks like you could hurt a zombie with it, and put it to use. Just about everything within reason, and then some things outside of reason, in a mall can make for zombie killing tools. Though when it comes to psychos there's a level of necessary preparation, these humans are meaning to do harm and don't roll over to a stack of CDs being flung in their faces. - Soundscape and menu music were completely preserved and enhanced to have a higher base quality to them, even if you can tell how dated it is through how the voice acting is. - Leveling feels smooth and just right in pacing to where if you do almost everything, you will naturally hit the level cap just as you're finishing the story in its entirety. This game arguably does this the best as well, as it feels like you start off as weak and feeble as anybody else but by the end of the game you will feel like a champion in zombie slaying. - Whole game has easy to learn hard to master mechanics, between magazines offering benefits that make your favorite weapons last up to 3x longer, skills that help with zombie management in and out of stressful scenarios, mixed drinks that give 6 health + a bonus effect per colored drink, this game rewards learning and memorizing your best tools to get the job done. And ends with the bad things - Aforementioned bug is game breaking, and needs third party software to fix. This is an immediate glare since it shouldn't be up to the community to fix the developers' product for them, and not everyone should be expected to fix it to play the game in the first place. - Combat gets stale fast compared to every other dead rising game, and this is partway because this is the first game and before the running trend of Combined Weapons took the scene, but a large part of it comes from there's clear cut best weapons while well over 2/3rds are jokes and gags in that vein of dark comedy that comes with the franchise. - The AI is a joke, both survivors and psychos alike all are either painstakingly predictable in their pathfinding and where standing just right breaks everything entirely, or they're so nonfunctional that they get stuck in logical loops shoving 1 or 2 zombies in a horde until you save them - or they die. - While it's preserved to be faithful the UI is still miserable to look at with how much of the screen all of the UI elements take up during gameplay, it's not exactly a major issue but it does still detract visually from being enjoyable. Now the Tl;dr The combat is both fantastic in how easy it is to pick up and play, as well as how in depth you can push it to make everything much easier for yourself. Controls are pretty questionable at times the more skills you unlock in game, but it's easy enough to play with just the base control scheme presented at the start of the game. Audio is for better or worse similar to the 2006 version just enhanced digitally as best it can be while still keeping the spirit of the original intact. Story is pretty decent if you're a fan of schlocky melodramatic B-movies. All in all this game is a solid 7.5/10 from me, age hasn't done it an amazing amount of kindness and this is furthered as a problem with capcom botching the job with making sure the port is fully functional out of the box without third party fixes, but despite these criticisms it ends up being an extremely charming zombie comedy game where you can really put the tagline "Chop till you drop!" to the test.

Despite the honestly really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ AI of the survivors, this game is quite the delight. EXTREMELY re-playable, and even though this game will piss you off badly sometimes, you won't want to put it down. Very fun all around, love it!!
