Dirt Rally 2.0

All other online functionalities within DiRT Rally 2.0, such as Time Trial, My Team Career and Quick Play Multiplayer, will continue to be playable. For further information on online service updates in EA games, please visit the service updates page on EA’s website (see below).

Intro Dirt Rally 2.0 is a hardcore car sim that is said to be used for practice by some professional rally drivers. Despite looking more intuitive and approachable than some car sims, thanks to the straightforward menu design, it is not a beginner friendly game. If you don’t already have adequate experience with car sims, or at least arcade-sims, there’s a good chance you may not like it, since the game does little in teaching things you need to know. Learn to Drive I got Dirt Rally 1 back in 2019. At the time, I really hated it. I kept spinning and crashing all over the place because I didn’t know how to handle twitchy cars, let alone advanced techniques such as weight transfer, counter-steering, and trail braking. Since then, I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing different racing games, and by the time I picked up Dirt Rally 2.0, I was a much more experienced racing game player. Even so, it took me tens of hours to get comfortable with the quite oversteery physics and learn different driving techniques. I’m now well over a hundred hours into the game, but I still consider myself just an okay driver, and some RWD cars remain challenging to handle. Dirt Rally 2.0 is a hard game with a steep learning curve on driving. Learn to Tune Driving is just one of the two hurdles to enjoying this game, the other is tuning the car. All racing games with a tuning system have to balance how much performance comes from the driver and how much comes from the car’s setup, and I am not a fan of how Dirt Rally 2.0 handles this. As many cars are almost undrivable without proper setup, tuning feels less like a way to enhance performance, and more like something you have to do to fix the car so that it can be driven properly. Tuning is time-consuming requiring knowledge and lots of trial and error, and it is not as convenient as the first Dirt Rally where you can directly download tunes from Steam Workshop. Fortunately, people generously share their tunes online saving you a lot of trouble. Personally, I find tunes from Youtube channel Rally Technical to be very solid. I usually use his tunes as foundations and fine-tune them to best suit myself. Feelings of Driving Once you get the hang of driving and have good tunes, Dirt Rally 2.0 starts to be enjoyable. The driving is easily the best among all racing games I’ve played in terms of how it feels - raw, direct, responsive, precise and detailed. Playing from cockpit view, you can feel how the chassis shifts its weight, how the rear rotates, and how the tires grip and slide (driving is easier at this view too). There is just something incredibly satisfying about the fast weight shifts as you blast through corners, the brief sense of weightlessness flying over crests, and the momentum of tackling a series of winding roads. For me, this is what makes the game rewarding and keeps me coming back. Camera Shake Additionally, if you are prone to motion sickness, you should be aware that in cockpit view, which I consider the best way to play, camera shake can be very violent. Due to the terrain, Australia and Argentina have particularly bad camera shake, to the point that it obstructs your view of the road. I find it quite uncomfortable even though I have long since gotten used to it. Other locations have noticeable shake as well, just more tolerable. The camera shake setting is also strange: according to many players online, no shake actually feels shakier than max shake, and I personally feel the same. That’s enough reading if you are just looking for buying advice. Racing Format I would probably put another hundred hours into the game, but I wouldn’t do it in a short period of time because the lengthy race format can make the game quite tedious and tiring at times. In career rally, the main game mode, a typical season consists of six events (six locations), and each event contains ten stages (ten routes). Assuming everything goes smoothly, one season can easily take around five to six hours – but you’re likely to spend even longer as you may have to restart. That’s quite a lot of driving. Since you can only use one car throughout a season, shorter seasons would just be better, allowing players to try more cars and making the game less tedious. The lengthy format also feels a lot like endurance racing. You can genuinely feel your performance decline over time, which is why I usually only play for an hour or two each night. Dynamic Difficulty That five-to-six hours season length is only estimate though, because the season length is actually determined by league, the dynamic difficulty system in career mode. Players cannot set the league themselves. If you perform well, you move up to a higher league, facing more challenging AI and longer races, vice versa. I don’t like this design because it is discouraging, like players are punished with a harder and longer game because of good performance. More importantly, it makes the AI problem more glaring. AI I’ve played all the GRID games, another racing series developed by the same developer. Its AI has always been bad, with little improvement over the years. Naturally, Dirt Rally 2.0 suffers from pretty terrible AI as well. In the higher leagues of career rally, you can notice AI absolutely flies whenever the road is straight or has few turns, regardless of how treacherous the terrain is. It’s even more infuriating in career rallycross, where you race against AI in real time. Not only do they have far more grip than you, they also blindly follow the predetermined driving lines, making no attempt to avoid collisions like a human driver would. In the higher leagues, where AI can match or even exceed your pace, they will absolutely ram you if you get in their way, often sending players straight off the track. And if you hit them back, they barely move, like you’ve just slammed into a rock. The unfairness and AI’s inability to behave like a human driver make career rallycross the worst part of the game. It is just pure anger fuel. Always Connecting Server Money management is important. I couldn’t afford repair my car at one point, resulting in a miserable race. To make money, as well as accumulate mileage (for engine upgrade), players have to participate events under My Team tab, including career rally and rallycross, and various challenges. But almost everything under this tab comes with this annoying connecting server requirement. Repairing your car, upgrading the engine, managing the crew, starting a race, almost every entering and exiting a menu under this tab, require sitting through a frustratingly slow server connection process. Since race restarts are limited, it’s common for players to exit and re-enter the event instead, but this workaround means waiting for the server connection twice. It’s a lot of frustration for nothing. The server is unstable as well. Sometimes it acts up, and you cannot access My Team events at all. And remember how I said races are already lengthy, server instability caused me to lose progress twice, forcing me to redo hours of progress. This constant connecting server is completely unnecessary and stupid. And what happens when the server eventually shuts down? Are we going to have another Ubisoft’s The Crew situation on our hands? Verdict For all its flaws, I really enjoy the game, and I’d happily recommend this game if you are a seasoned racing game player, but do be prepared for some fussiness along the way.

After playing Dirt 4 for many hours, I decided to give Dirt Rally 2 a go. I must admit, at first I struggled with the the handling of the game, deleted it several times before reading on line that the wheel was best set at 540 rather than 900. Once I started to grasp this, and learned how to handle the cars from FWD to modern AWD, the game became very enjoyable, now Dirt 4 has been put away and Dirt Rally 2 is now my main racing game I play. Nearly 500 hours and I'm not yet bored. I love the fact I can set my own championships, in different weather conditions, day, night, I can choose which country and which car to play. I never bothered with the career mode from the beginning, just creating my own custom races. As a 65 year old , I absolutely love this game on my wheel, pedals , handbrake and gear stick. The persevering has certainly paid off, when I started this game I was still on my 12 year old PC, new Pc with newer and faster technology, and for an old game in 2026, I just cant put down.

I honestly can't believe this game came out in 2019. Dirt Rally 2.0 still looks absolutely amazing, runs smoothly, and for me has some of the best rally physics in any game. The cars actually feel like they have weight, every surface feels different, and when you finally save a slide that you thought was impossible to recover from, it feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. The engine sounds are also some of the best in the entire gaming industry. Codemasters absolutely nailed them. Throwing a Group B car through a forest with the volume turned up is just pure dopamine. My only real complaint is that the AI at 100% difficulty can be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes they're driving like Colin McRae himself possessed all of them and you're fighting for your life just to keep up, and then the next rally you're somehow 45 seconds ahead of second place. It's weird, but it doesn't really ruin the game for me. Overall, another Codemasters masterpiece. Unlike EA WRC, I still keep coming back to Dirt Rally 2.0. I love this game so much that I literally bought it twice — once on PS4 and now again on PC — just so I could 100% it all over again. And yeah, I have over 1,000 hours on the PS4 version, so I'd say I've had enough time with it to know what I'm talking about. There are newer rally games, but I still stick with this one. Highly recommended.

I bought this game along with my GSR50 and pro pedal setup. This was my first racing sim setup. Of all the games I bought (10) at the time of purchase, something about this game just feels the best. I know its older, but to me it feels the most realistic in terms of handling. Yes I still had to tweak settings to my liking, but it just feels the most realistic. And you can get this game cheap. Still holds up in 2026

I love this game, but it reset my championship 1 too many times. This needs addressing now. Stop posting about wrc24 in this game's board and push an actual update that fixes this.
