Final Fantasy VIII
It is a time of war. Galbadia, a Global Superpower, has declared war on Dollet, a country whose training academy is home to two personalities: the hot-headed Seifer and the 'lone wolf', Squall Leonhart. Both are equally at conflict with each other as their country is with Galbadia; to others, Squall appears lacking in team spirit, while Seifer lacks the discipline of his rival.
However, a chance encounter with the free-spirited Rinoa Heartilly turns Squall's universe upside down; having thrived on discipline, Squall find the carefree Rinoa fascinating. He also begins to dream that he is Laguna Loire, a Galbadian army soldier…
Meanwhile, a sorceress manipulates the most powerful men in Galbadia. Will Squall and his party succeed in defeating this maniacal sorceress and saving their world? What part does the mysterious Laguna play? Only you can decide what happens next, as the greatest Role Playing Adventure of all time returns... Key Features:

This version is way better than the 2019 remaster. Just grab FFNX and the PS1 music mod for it, both are easy to install. FF8 is a good game. I play/replay it because it's comfy and the music is fantastic. You don't have to grind levels, just draw magic - which you can bypass with a card game. The story is cheesy: you have to remember that it's basically supposed to be a high school drama, and that the moments between Squall and Rinoa are supposed to be funny.

this port is horrid. it took me years to even comprehend what was going on with the controller scheme to even be able to play it. the controller scheme actually works great! but only for the menu that pops-up pre-game. you need to set or download a community scheme to set your controller to keyboard. this is the only way i've been able to use a controller here. it took years to discover this. ok so it's been 2-3 years and i'm finally in the game! wait... somethings not right... what is up with the music? holy jesus this is giving me a real headache. maybe i should turn down the music to something minimal.... oh... it's *only* a master sound option. so glitchy music or no sound. awesome... at least the hi-speed option works, though it's not consistent as to what speed you get on any screen. i'm not finished yet with the game, and i will be completing it as long as the game allows itself to be completed. but i'm tired boss... can't a AAA studio ever release a good port?

I put 113 hours into FFVIII and I’m still not sure if Squall likes anyone, including me. But honestly? I loved every minute. The junction system is weird until you break it, then suddenly you’re doing 9,999 damage at level 12 and wondering why you ever doubted it. Triple Triad ate more of my life than I want to admit. The soundtrack still slaps. The story goes completely off the rails in the best way. If you enjoy JRPG chaos, teen angst, and card games that ruin your sleep schedule, this one’s worth the time.

Before talking about the game itself I have to point out that, for reasons I can't begin to guess, you're required to use a separate launcher and have a SE account. For a Playstation game. From 1999. That problem speaks for itself, as does the fact that I had to basically invoke dark spirits through a complex forbidden ritual just to make it recognize my controller. I think I had to download a custom controller layout for Big Picture mode or something, which I've never had to do for any other game ever. As for the game, I genuinely can't fathom why this is the "black sheep" of final fantasy games, nor why people rave about it. It's hard to even say anything other than "it's fine" because...it's fine. It's not terrible, it's not great, and it's not really that out there. It's just alright. The junction system is a little odd at first but you get used to it pretty quick, and it's really not as big of a deal as it seems at first to have to sacrifice some power by using magic you junction to a stat because to be honest, you won't be using magic much anyway. Except for revives and a few protection spells, you don't need it. There's some grinding involved to get a lot of good magic to junction but that applies to literally every jrpg in existence. I beat every boss and optional boss except Omega Weapon and I didn't use 90% of the game's spells, which is a problem on its own but it negates the other possible complaint of having to choose between using magic or junctioning it. Overall, the junction system is an interesting idea and fine for a single entry. It doesn't make the game worse, but I wouldn't say it makes it better. The cast is pretty weak, honestly. None of them felt terribly interesting, though Squall might be the most accurately written teenage boy ever because "broody and insistent on doing things himself because he doesn't want to get hurt until he sees one (1) hot girl and then immediately loses his mind over her" is the most teenage boy behavior imaginable. The soundtrack was okay, but I can't think of a single song I actually thought was memorable. The voiced one wasn't too bad, though. Summoning cutscene length for GFs is kind of annoying, but as you progress through the game if you're actually engaging with the junction system you'll get to a point where there's no need to summon them. Eden is nice since it can break the damage cap but the summon cutscene takes over a minute which is rough. Gameplay itself was alright, like it played the same as any other Playstation game from almost 30 years ago. Not too hard to control, a little clunky at times but not impossible. The final dungeon was a little obnoxious but most of the other ones weren't too bad. Which again all just comes back around to "it's fine". It's a completely average game that's not a waste of time to play but won't absolutely stun, either. It's fine.

A to hry s kartičkama fakt moc nemusím. Ale tohle je jiné. V podstatě naprosto jednoduchá matika, ale vražedně efektivní kombinatorika. Tohle nebyla jen bezvýznamná hříčka. Pomocí schopnosti Card Mod od vyvolávacího strážce (Guardian Force) Quezacotla mohl hráč karty rozemlít na extrémně vzácné materiály a nejsilnější kouzla ve hře. Zkušení hráči díky tomu dokázali hru totálně „rozbít“ a získat ultimátní zbraně (jako Squallův Lionheart) hned na prvním disku, aniž by museli levelovat postavy. Geniální designový prvek. Každý region ve hře (Balamb, Dollet, Galbadia...) měl svá vlastní specifická pravidla (Open, Random, Same, Plus). Když hráč cestoval, pravidla z jednoho regionu mohl nevědomky „přenést“ a nakazit jimi jiný region, což často vedlo k brutálním kombinacím a infarktovým stavům. ZDE!!!

Final Fantasy VIII is one of my all-time favorite FFs, but alas this edition is irrelevant now that the Remastered version exists. Just buy that instead.

While I still think its the weakest of the PS1 final fantasys, the game has grown on me over the years. While I'm still not a big fan of the junction system, trying something new is never a bad thing. The story is definitely convoluted, but in the end, its basically a space opera love story, and I kinda dig it. If you're gonna play it these days, I recommend the Succession and Martial Law mods. The dialogue is completely rewritten and gets rid of the amnesia and time compression. That changes everything and makes the story a bit more enjoyable. Martial Law is a rebalancing mod that lessens the impact of how quickly junctioning can make you OP and gives the characters and GFs more identity.
