One of the most worthless remasters of all time I just want to start off by saying that I think Final Fantasy 8 is a decent game despite its many flaws holding it back. However, this will not be a review of the game itself - if that's what you're looking for, I already did so in my review of the 2013 version which you can read by clicking here so I will mainly be focusing on the remaster itself and how it compares to older versions of the game. All you need to know about my thoughts on the game is that it's very flawed with tons of cool ideas, brought down by its execution - mainly how you're punished for grinding encounters, the easily exploitable mechanics, and its weird, non-sensical story with bland characters outside the main duo. But the music is top tier stuff, Triple Triad is a really fun card game, and breaking the game is at least enjoyable to do. That said, if you hated Final Fantasy 8 since its original release, this remaster won't change your mind. This is the exact same game with the same story, mechanics and gameplay. But this remaster is not without its positives - you don't need a Square Enix account to play this and it's fully playable offline without the need to connect to any servers. Controller support is an improvement, with no need to configure Steam input, and button icons are now shown on-screen making it much easier to know which button does what. No mods are needed for the original PS1 music, which also no longer resets after every encounter. Sadly, this is where the positives end, because actually calling this a remaster is a joke. Only the character models and UI were updated - none of the enemies, battle areas, pre-rendered environments or the world map received any enhancements at all. As a result, this remaster looks ugly, especially on the world map where you can easily see the tiling on the textures and the seams in the skybox. In-game textures are blurry instead of pixelated which I wasn't a fan of. The updated 3D models clash with the pre-rendered backgrounds and is jarring to look at. It certainly doesn't help that they appear more fuzzy than they were in previous releases. I also noticed strange graphical details I was not supposed to, such as on this screen and several others where the NPCs are just part of the background as opposed to in-game models: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3784891872 To top it all off, this remaster is still in 4/3 with black bars on the sides of the screen even outside of pre-rendered scenes and with no way to stretch the image so it takes up the full screen, a feature the 2013 version had. Also absent is the option for pixel graphics that's much more reminiscent of the PS1 version without most of the graphical issues mentioned above. Overall, the original PS1 and 2013 PC versions look better especially with the pixelated textures and original character models. Performance has not improved in the slightest. It's about the same as the 2013 PC version which is inferior to the PS1 release. Field screens are 30FPS while menus are 60FPS. Battles only run at 15FPS which extends to the UI during combat as well which was 60FPS on PS1, making selections less responsive and is much harder to boost GFs via mashing the action button, as well as executing Zell's and Squall's Limit Breaks that require quick button inputs. Just like the 2013 PC version, there's still no controller vibration or analogue support at all, which is inexcusable for a remaster of a game that originally had it on PS1. You can use the left stick to move, but it mimics the d-pad and is limited to 8 way movement making navigation on field screens less fluid and more cumbersome when on some screens, right is down and left is up, or movement in a straight line being impossible due to the camera angle used. This extends to vehicle control, where accelerate and reverse was possible with the right stick on PS1 but not here. I can't even recommend this for achievement hunters. There are only 34 achievements, 11 less than the 2013 version, and not a single one of them is new to the remaster - the accumulative ones are no longer tracked so now there's no way to know how close you are to completing them until they unlock. Here's the full list of achievements not included: Choco Loot Acquired an item from Chocobo World Top Level Boko Reach level 100 with Boko Magazine Addict Collect all Weapons Monthly/Combat King/Pet Pals/Occult Fan magazines Dog Trainer Learn all of Rinoa's Limit Breaks Blue Magic Master Learn all of Quistis' Limit Breaks Professional Player Win 100 games of Triple Triad Collector Collect all cards Top level Reach Level 100 Maximum gil Reach maximum gil 10,000 Kills Kill 10,000 enemies Contrived Finish Finish the game at Squall's initial level While it is nice to see the 10K kills achievement gone as that was just a tedious time waster, it sucks that the other ones are missing as they really incentivised exploring as much of this game as possible. Contrived Finish in particular made for an interesting challenge run and it's disappointing to not see it here, making this an overall inferior set to go for. If you've already 100%'d the 2013 version, you've basically 100%'d this as well. But the biggest omission from this version is the entire Chocobo World mini-game, originally made for the PocketStation on PS1 that only released in Japan and included in the 2013 PC version which is sad as I thought it was an interesting novelty and a good way to obtain rare items. A huge missed opportunity to rework this mini-game as a mobile app. Now, the only way to obtain the Chocobo World exclusive items is with Rinoa's Angelo Search. So good luck trying to get any of these items here, as I've only ever triggered this once in my entire playthrough and all I got was a Cottage, an item easily bought from a store. There is no extra content in this remaster. No additional dungeons, no bestiary, no art gallery or music player, not even a New Game Plus which would've fit this game perfectly given how it works. Even the x3 speed and HP/Limit boosters aren't new additions as they also existed in the 2013 version, and removing encounters can easily be done in-game with Diablos' Enc-None ability available very early on. The only new feature here is auto-save which I hated. It uses file 1 in Game Folder Slot 1, can't be saved to manually, and only auto-saves on the world map. There's no way to disable it, forcing me to save in file 2. If you haven't played Final Fantasy 8 yet and want to try it out for yourself, just get a used PS1 copy + PocketStation, and play it on a PS1/2 or on the DuckStation emulator on PC for the best experience. Or get the 2013 PC version of the game which is still being sold on Steam right now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/39150/FINAL_FANTASY_VIII/ Not only does it have more content, but it's also cheaper and has more graphics settings available for it. Don't waste your money on this remaster, not even on sale. This feels more like a slightly modded PC version with a HD texture pack than it does an actual remaster from the ground up, with barely any effort put into fully enhancing the overall game. But what Final Fantasy 8 really needed more than ever is a remake, one that keeps the essence of the junction system but fixes all the flaws to make it even more fun, as well as expanding upon the story and characters. Out of all the games in the series, this is the one that deserved such treatment the most. FF8 deserved so much better than this - despite all its flaws, the original game is still worth giving a go for fans of RPGs; just make sure you play the older versions instead if you can. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3788590163

My favorite game in the series. First time played it 25 years ago. Still holds up for me. Love the story and characters. Junction systems can be a little bit tricky to grasp, but when you do it's really cool how you can brake a game. Drawing magic can be some tedious, but when FF was without a bit of grind? Remaster looks good, but i still prefer old PS1 look. For Steam Deck users. If you have trouble with game freez and crush after 15-30min of play, try revert OS vertion to 3.7.25. Maybe they fix it one day, but now it's not playable normally on Steam Deck with new versions of SteamOS.

It's one of the best Final Fantasy games in my opinion, if you played this game as a kid and want to relive the experience then definitely buy it.

this game is borderline unplayable on my deck. i set it down or put it in sleep and the graphics cut out and i have yet to figure out how to fix it. so a softlock. autosave seems to be broken too. otherwise its fine i guess if i never stop playing until i hit a save point.

Unplayable. There are mods to "fix" the framerate issues but a game shouldn't require an outside fix. It's obvious that the devs didn't put much effort into this port. Don't buy it.
