Brilliant! This is the second time I've played this and it is superb. It gets straight on with the action and there's no pratting about with collecting items and making stupid items on the way. You pick up what you need as you go and use it. There is a challenging array of enemies and plenty of puzzle solving - some easy, some difficult. The story is imaginative and there is a wide variety of gameplay locations. If only all action games could be made like this. *****

Half Life 2: Update is a little different from most games I review because it is not really a new game at all. It is a free community made update for Half Life 2 that came out in 2015, and its main purpose is to make the original game look and run better while keeping the actual experience intact. That is exactly what I want from something like this. I am still playing the same City 17, following the same story and using the same weapons and physics, but the lighting, shadows, fog and effects have been improved quite a lot. It feels more like giving an old game a proper clean up than trying to remake it. The lighting is easily the biggest improvement for me. The update adds a full HDR lighting pass, improved shadows, new particle effects and better fog, and I think those changes work really well because Half Life 2 already had a strong visual style. It does not completely replace the original look with something modern and out of place. Instead, it makes the environments feel more believable while keeping the same overall design. City 17 benefits the most from this because the darker areas, outdoor sections and industrial locations have much better contrast and atmosphere than I remember from the original version. I also like that the update fixes a huge number of small problems rather than only changing the graphics. There are visual fixes and gameplay fixes throughout the game, so the whole thing feels a little cleaner. The Community Commentary mode is another nice addition because I can listen to extra commentary while playing and get more information about different parts of the game. I do not think I would use it every time I replay Half Life 2, but it is a good extra for me when I want to look at the game from a different angle. The update also includes the full original campaign rather than trying to turn the experience into something completely different. The main thing holding it back for me is that I am still playing Half Life 2. The update does not add a new campaign, new weapons, new enemies or some huge amount of extra gameplay. That is not really a criticism of what the project is supposed to be, but it does matter when I am judging it as something I have to spend time playing. If I already know the original game extremely well, there is only so much a better lighting system can change. The commentary gives me something extra to listen to, but most of the actual content remains exactly what it was. There is also a strange timing issue with the update now. Valve released a much more comprehensive official Half Life 2 anniversary update in 2024, adding things such as the Episodes, new developer commentary, Workshop support and another large set of visual improvements and bug fixes. That makes Half Life 2: Update less essential to me than it once was. I still think the 2015 project was an impressive piece of work, especially considering it was made by a community developer and given away for free, but I cannot ignore that the original Half Life 2 has since received a much more complete official refresh. Even with that in mind, I really like how careful this update is. It does not try to modernise Half Life 2 by changing the things that made it work in the first place. The physics are still the physics, the weapons still feel familiar and the environments still have the same identity. For me, that restraint is important. A visual update can easily go too far and make an older game lose some of its original character, but this mostly feels like the same game with a cleaner coat of paint. That makes it a much better experience for me than a full remake would have been. Overall, Half Life 2: Update is a very good update to an already great game, but I have to judge it for what it actually is. The improved lighting, shadows, effects, bug fixes and commentary make the original experience look and feel better, and getting all of that for free is hard to complain about. At the same time, it does not add much actual gameplay, and the 2024 official Half Life 2 update has made this particular version less necessary than it used to be. I still think it deserves credit for what it achieved, especially as a community project, but I would not rate an update to an excellent game as highly as the excellent game itself. Rating: 8.6/10

no se como describir este juego, me maravillo la primera vez que lo jugue en una xbox clasica, me volvio a maravillar la vez que lo jugue en mi primer pc patata y ahora que existen una infinidad de juegos con mejores graficos termino volviendo a la envolvente historia del gordon freeman 10/10.

Spiele es nun den zweiten Abend in Folge. Bin in einem Tunnel und das Licht fällt hinein und sieht wundervoll aus. Wie der Dachboden in dem Haus in dem ich 2004 das originale HL2 spielte. Es war ein Pentium 4 und dazu die Geforce 256er. Einfach ein tolles Update und Spiel. Habe nach 22 Jahren herausgefunden das so ein Wesen im Tunnel singt.
