Unfortunately a big stepdown from the first game. The idea of seeing the past of Chloe and Rachel is definitely cool, but it’s just not really good for a choice based game. These things already happened and were pointed out in the first game anyway, which means you play the whole game knowing how it will end and you can do nothing about it. Because of that, the choices barely matter and I really wish the story was slightly more engaging. The gameplay is also a major problem. Without Max's time travel powers, you can really tell they didn't know what to do. The soundtrack and the visuals are absolutely amazing and easily the best part of the game. It was also really cool to see some returning characters and the game definitely has a few cute and cozy moments between Chloe and Rachel. But overall, it had much more potential than was shown here. It’s just a pretty disappointing experience that didn't really need to exist.

¿Jugaste Life is Strange: Before the Storm? Algo positivo a destacar: buena narrativa y banda sonora. ¿Debo jugar Life is Strange? Before the Storm es una precuela, aunque se recomienda iniciar desde el primer juego (Life is Strange). Valoración 4/5 Life is Strange: Before the Storm es inferior al primer juego, eso está claro. Buena narrativa, banda sonora y apartado artístico, sello de Life is Strange.

Devs, you screw it all — after meeting Sera, Rachel should have gone home and told her father, "I understand you," and then, "Hi, Mom." If Sera deserved redemption, then so did James.

My main advice for anyone considering picking this up is that you should not play this before playing the first game. I understand this is a prequel to it and some folks like playing things in chronological order, but playing this first would really not favor the story of that first game, and that first game has a really compelling story. This game? Well... Slight spoilers ahead... Some messy behind the scenes stuff aside, this game runs into the kind of problems common amongst prequels of all sorts. You can't change the future, which is the past in terms of release, BUT you have to introduce new characters and give new insights. The problem? Well, there's a lot of characters who won't come up again, and consequences that will exist entirely within the canon perspective of this game. That's ok, but it does mean that some parts are played safe or in a way that can't really disrupt too much. Again, fine, but it does contribute to the "does what I do here actually matter?" feeling. My answer to that is "yes" btw, but other people could have a different perspective on that. As far as those characters and the story does go, I would the new cast AND the returning cast does a great job of fleshing out Arcadia Bay. In addition to getting to know a character that we only knew by name and reputation in the first game, we can actually get a really interesting insight on our old protagonist, Max, here through Chloe's eyes. By far, though, my favorite new involvements were the DND folks, which is unsurprising for anyone who knows me. Despite the fact that it is a very loose depiction of it, it was still a really fun element that helped add to the Chole's rounder personhood. This game does a lot with Chloe, which is to be expected of course, but I would by lying if I said that the voice change and the knowing where things head didn't impact things a bit. Still, overall, as far as prequels go, this is a fine character focus prequel, but not necessarily a great event or story focused prequel. Somewhat heavier spoilers ahead... This whole game has a tragic tone, even when it is trying to be happy or uplifting. Why? Well, the problem with the prequel is that we know how things end up, and that is in a happy place. And yet, I still say to play this after the first game. Why? Again, it is really more to serve the first game's story. Additionally, I don't think this game stands well on its own. If this were the first game, LIS would have never taken off. Sounds a bit harsh, but this is just not a solid enough thing on its own. On top of some weird glitches and other quality things like that, this game has a ton of sequences that are just a bit too slow. It actually made my playthrough take a loooong time...not in actual gameplay terms, but in actually sitting down to play it. There'd be these long sequences where you wouldn't be doing anything or the thing you're doing takes multiple steps, and at least one of those is just unnecessary from a gameplay perspective. A lot of this is serving a lulling, calmer tone for the game. Problem with that is that lulling and calming very quickly become "I'm getting tired playing this" and you end up not wanting to continue. That is why it took me so long to actually finish this. When the story wasn't necessarily the most compelling, you're looking at a bunch of sequences that just feel extra long, and you already know where this is heading anyways...well, you just start to feel like the game is a hurdle or a slog and not a thing you really want to engage with. This is a shame because, as alluded to earlier, there is plenty worthwhile here for insights on our new and returning characters. In some ways, I found this game very fascinating. In other ways, I did find myself getting a little sleepy, and that's not ideal. It succeeds where it needs to, but in doesn't necessarily make up for things in other areas. A real mixed bag this one... Still, I do think this is worth playing if you enjoyed the first game. It might feel a little wonky or disjointed at times, but it is a fine button on that first game's story in a roundabout, prequal sort of way. When you're going into this, you just gotta keep in mind that this is not going to recapture that lightning in a bottle that that first game was, and that's ok. I recommend picking this up on sale. Full price is a little much.
