================================================== STOP SELLING PROGRESSION A GREAT GAME BURIED UNDER P2W SYSTEMS ================================================== Lost Ark has one of the biggest problems a game can have: The actual gameplay is really good. The combat feels fantastic. The classes are fun. The raids can be genuinely challenging. The boss fights are some of the best parts of the game. And then you look at the progression system. >>> AND THERE IS THE PROBLEM <<< You can spend real money on Royal Crystals. Royal Crystals can be used through the official currency exchange to obtain Gold. Gold is one of the most important currencies for progression. There are paid Powerpasses. There are premium progression rewards. There are paid systems designed to accelerate character progression. Call it "pay for convenience". Call it "pay to progress". Call it whatever makes it sound nicer. If real money can buy character progression and power, I call it P2W. ================================================== >>> "BUT YOU STILL NEED SKILL TO RAID" <<< =================================================== Yes. Of course you do. Paying money does not magically teach you raid mechanics. But that completely misses the point. P2W does NOT have to mean: "Credit card -> automatically kill final boss." The problem is that two players can spend completely different amounts of time reaching the same level of character progression simply because one of them opened their wallet. One player farms. One player waits for weekly progression. One player collects materials and Gold. Another player can spend money and accelerate a significant part of that process. That is the problem. ================================================== >>> "BUT YOU CAN GET EVERYTHING FOR FREE" <<< ====================================================== Yes. Technically. And technically I can also walk across Europe instead of taking a train. That does not mean both options are equal. If something requires an enormous amount of grinding for one player while another player can significantly accelerate that progression with money, then saying: "But you don't HAVE to pay!" does not magically make the monetization fair. POSSIBLE FOR FREE != NOT P2W ================================================== >>> THE GAME HAS IMPROVED <<< ====================================== I will give the developers credit where it is deserved. Catch-up systems have improved a lot. New and returning players receive large amounts of progression support. Old progression has been streamlined. Solo raids exist. Events can push characters much closer to current content. That is genuinely good. But... Making the grind less painful does not magically remove the P2W monetization sitting on top of it. ================================================== >>> THIS GAME DOES NOT NEED THIS <<< ============================================= This is what annoys me the most about Lost Ark. The game itself is already good. The combat is good. The raids are good. The classes are good. The bosses are good. So why does progression need to be monetized like this? Sell me: * Skins * Mounts * Pets * Cosmetics * Emotes * Character customization * A cosmetic Battle Pass If I enjoy your game, I WANT to support it. But stop selling progression. A player's character power should make me think: "Damn, this person played a lot." Not: "Damn, this person played a lot... or has a really healthy credit limit." ================================================== >>> STOP NORMALIZING THIS <<< ====================================== The gaming industry keeps getting away with systems like this because players keep defending them. "You can earn everything without paying." "It is only pay to progress." "You still need skill." None of those statements change the basic fact: MONEY CAN ACCELERATE CHARACTER POWER AND PROGRESSION. If you enjoy that system, fine. But I am tired of pretending that selling progression suddenly stops being P2W because the free alternative technically exists. ================================================== >>> WHAT MAKES IT WORSE <<< ==================================== There is actually a fantastic game underneath all of this. That is why it is frustrating. Lost Ark could have been a game where I happily spent money because I loved playing it. Instead, the game constantly reminds you that money can make progression easier and faster. There is a huge difference between: "I want to spend money because this game is good." and: "I want to spend money because I am tired of the progression." Developers should WANT the first one. ================================================== >>> FINAL VERDICT <<< ============================== Lost Ark has excellent combat. Great raids. Fun classes. Satisfying bosses. And a progression system I absolutely do not want to support. I would love to recommend Lost Ark purely based on its gameplay. But I cannot recommend monetization where real money can directly accelerate character progression. STOP SELLING POWER. STOP SELLING PROGRESSION. LET PLAYING THE GAME BE THE PROGRESSION. ================================================== >>> AND REMEMBER <<< ============================= The hardest Lost Ark raid mechanic isn't dodging AoEs. It's dodging the cash shop. And if your honing RNG is bad enough, don't worry. There is always the secret legendary class: VISA / MASTERCARD * Instant progression buff * No honing required * Works with every build * Available directly from the cash shop 100% success rate. No RNG required. ==================================================

This game is not worth the trouble. You are basically forced to do homework (content you don't enjoy but have to run for sake of progression) because the endgame content you DO want to run are held hostage by a P2W, RNG progression system, further so by the 7 other friends you are raiding with who are ahead despite putting less money and effort and waiting on you. I've seen braindead takes like "don't cry about being unlucky, that's not the game's fault lol" and "how will the game stay afloat without p2w?", which don't understand the crux of the issue: games are supposed to be entertainment, but Lost Ark feels terrible to progress through. What good is "good combat" and "shiny new raid" if the game is designed so that "being unlucky" means you cannot play it? How can you justify needing to pay 100x more dollars than the next guy to make the same progression? These problems are fundamental to many live-service MMOs who hold content hostage behind RNG P2W progression, and unfortunately Lost Ark is just one of many such trash. Funny enough, I have survived over 15k hours of this game across two accounts, precisely because I have always been the lucky one. But there is no point anymore; all my friends fell victim to the BS, and now every week my guildmate has to scrounge for people just to even fill the 8 slots and enter the raid. I have given this game many years and attempts to fix itself and completed basically every vertical and horizontal content in the process, but after years of hoping for miracles, I'm done. I've always known the RNG-P2W was going to be the death of this game in global, and I really hoped SmileGate would come up with an idea that might make the business model viable without making it feel terrible. Instead, it just became another statistic that proves once again that RNG progression and P2W don't mix, not that P2W mixes well with any game to begin with. RNG-P2W might work in Korea where they don't have legal casinos, but the rest of the world does, and the dopamine junkies this game is trying to capture are already wasting away at the slots.

(I'm making this review after a few years I quit Lost Ark. It's just that I'm cleaning up and organizing my Steam Library and I stumbled upon Lost Ark) 3 years wasted of my life(full 3 years - aka, 365 days x 3. I only missed a few days not playing the game. Just look at my hours played. And that's hours played). I wish I would be able to punch that Smilegate shareholder that destroyed this game. Die. And AGS is absolutely garbanzo incompetent.

Game is fun but i have been left playing by myself lately as my friends have either quit or moved on to other static groups and playing alone in an MMO is not really fun. I don't regret all the time i've spent playing as most of it has been enjoyable but it's just time i move on to something else. If you have a friend or two to jump into the game with there is tons of fun to be had, the combat is amazing the raids are fun and they have drastically reduced the amount of daily things you have to do to keep progressing. Overall i'd give Lost Ark a 8.5/10
