This game is criminally underrated and it saddens me to see this game wasn't more popular. This is one of the best Metroidvania games I've played over the years alongside Shantae, Ori, Hollow Knight, Nine Sols, and The Messenger. I played this on the Switch when it released and am finally playing it again on Steam for 100% completion. The level of polish in the animations and the artwork is insane and you can tell the developers put a lot of thought and love into this game to try to create an experience that was faithful to the Wonder Boy franchise while also bringing it into the modern era of gaming. The game looks and plays amazingly on high refresh rate monitors and even has dynamic ultrawide support in areas of the game where the map extends beyond the 16:9 aspect ratio. This game and the remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap are some of my favorite game OSTs of all time. The Green Fields song is such a bop. I tried playing the remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, but the floaty controls and brutally challenging combat just make it a difficult experience for me to enjoy in comparison to this game. Monster Boy can be a bit difficult at first, but it never felt unfair and the modern frequent checkpoints make it much more palatable than it's predecessor. This is the game that feels like the direction the Wonder Boy franchise truly deserves. I do hope that we get a sequel someday, even with how unlikely that seems. Also, for the guy saying this game is just a Dollar Store Shantae clone... The Wonder Boy franchise existed well before Shantae. Shantae was the one that was heavily inspired by the Wonder Boy franchise with being able to change into different creature forms. As much as I also love the Shantae series, you need to pay respect to the original works.

A really good surprise! As a big metroidvania fan, I had tried the game some time ago, but for some reason, put it on shelf pretty quickly (so I hadn't played much). I'm glad I gave the game a second chance, as it is actually a fantastic metroidvania: fun gameplay and exploration, good original ideas, and quality graphics/music. Frankly, if you love this genre (especially the non-souls-like ones), this is a must-play!

Big fan of metroidvanias. Love the hand drawn art style and gameplay. Story is fairly basic, but if you ever wanted to play as a snake, a frog, and a one eyed pig altogether, this is for you.

Having bought and played through the game twice on other platforms, it's an absolute pleasure to play through this gem once gain, on Steam. Visually, this is a far better realisation of the Wonderboy universe than the Lizardcube WB3 remake. The audio, from effects through to music, is everything you'd hope for, with returning classics re-worked, and new songs that fit the world wonderfully, all arranged with great skill. The gameplay takes the Monsterworld formula and expands and polishes what came before, with nice touches like maps, that are obviously expected in the genre now, as well as things I wouldn't have expected, like magic making a return, but now it being far more impactful on gameplay, alongside other QOL aspects like fast select wheels. It's not ground breaking, but it updates the formula to where it needs to be, so the game doesn't feel old in comparison to its metroidvania contemporaries. It does, however, do many interesting things with map design and it 100% feels like a Wonderboy game, and to get all of that balancing act just right for fans is surely no mean feat. It's not a perfect game. There are later sections that needed more playtesting for odd difficulty spikes, but the same could be said of previous titles. It's by no means a deal breaker. Monster Boy is a love letter to the previous games, and in many ways exceeds their legacy. It's not as tight as Dragon's Trap, but then few games have ever achieved that. It is, however, 20-40 hours of great fun, and it's well worth paying full price for anyone who remembers the Wonderboy/Monsterworld series fondly.

Metroidvania Sehr Extrawaffen-lastiges Gameplay.

Okay metroidvania with awesome music and great animations. The game has too much grinding, some puzzles are awful and you'll die inexplicably climbing stairs. But then again those flaws make it easier to focus on non-gameplay aspects of the game, which are nice. I just hoped the soundtrack was available in Spotify, so that the game could be taken as introduction to it.

This is my second time having played through the game, originally getting it on GOG years back. It's just pure joy, the puzzles are fun, usually pretty simple and keep you moving forward at a steady pace. I never felt gated by any of them, but having mini ah-ha moments just works so well. It's quite puzzle heavy, though, and even the bosses are puzzles themselves. The obvious draw here though is the absolutely flawless aesthetic. I wanna live in this world. It's perfect in its execution, and the music fits it in every regard. There's just nothing I could possibly complain about. Gaming perfection, specifically in what it's trying to be. Typically, combat would be more of a priority for me, but it just doesn't need it to succeed, which says a lot.

I still havent finished the game, but it is an absolute gem. I love the art and music. The character swap mechanic is fun and keeps things fresh. The exploration and puzzles are exciting. The level design is perfect. The bosses arent necessarily challenging at all, but beating them still feels rewarding. I do find movement can be a little clunky at times, but nothing too annoying or game breaking. EDIT: Just finished all achievements and I wish I could play the game for the first time again.
