The early game is pretty terrible. It's not great to look at, the music is pretty mid, the monsters aren't very interesting and the level design is very bland. The dialogue is especially egregious, where every living NPC is standing there to explain exactly one concept of story or gameplay and have nothing else going for them at this point. The one thing that kept me going was seeing my starter monster's skill tree and monster journal sprite, which hinted at both more gameplay depth and art talent down the line. I was right to keep going. Every aspect of the game drastically improves as it goes on. New characters start talking to each other according to their personalities, move around the map and play a role in the wider story. The environment art gets nice to look at. The music becomes actually enjoyable and match the area's vibe. The combat opens up with dozens of more creative monster designs with delightful pixel art animation, each with several skill trees including unique skills that combo with other monsters and everything. It slowly builds up to getting all the basics right. What sets it apart however is the scoring system. In this game, you don't capture the monsters. You kill them and they drop eggs you can hatch. This means you don't have to get their health as low as possible to increase the odds of successfully capturing them, like SOME other games (cough). You can go all out and not worry about accidentally killing them off. In fact, that's how you get them on your team. When you finish a fight, the chances of looting rare items (including the slain creature's egg) increases with your score. The main factors towards scoring are : - Healthiness (how close to full health your party is at the end) - Speed (how few turns you took to win) - Element advantage (including a large variety of elemental debuffs, it's not just damage multipliers) - High combos (that's a whole system explained in game I won't get into in this review) Long story short, if you finish the fight quickly without taking too much damage while using the game's systems to your advantage, you can 100% GUARANTEE a capture with no RNG involved. It's great. The single point of frustration one might have with this system, is that defensive teams are pretty bad because fights are longer, not only taking more time per fight but also reducing your odds of good loot, meaning you need to grind a bit to catch up compared to acing your fights. Its designed to make attrition a bad strategy, which some players might dislike. A detail that might be important for some : Your character's gender is dictated by its body type, but all outfits are unisex, and you can change your body type along with your outfit for free and at any time at the tailor. Characters in the game update the pronouns they use for the player accordingly. Overall, it has rough edges especially for the environment art and music (even outside the starting area), but it's actually really good stuff. There's A LOT of choices you get to make on how your monsters fight based on gear, skilltrees, upgrade items, variants, team composition and more. It's pretty long with many surprises along the way. Maybe a bit steep at 20€ given its faults, but an absolute steal on sale. EDIT : Yeah, no, it just keeps going. 20€ is actually good value, ngl.

A metroidvania for Pokemon lovers who want a deep battle system. If you want anything else out of your metroidvania I'd look elsewhere. The game expects you to read through dozens of mons and their abilities to form a tightly compatible team otherwise you WILL get hard stuck on a boss battle in this game. Don't get too attached to your mons because this game wants you to optimize your team which probably means ditching a mon you actually want to use because it's abilities don't synergize with the others. The battle system also gets old really fast due to how long it takes. Making the battles 3v3 and 6v6 makes battling a disproportionate amount of your adventure. It's a game that feels like it need a wiki to play on a first run so if you really value exploration and puzzle solving in your metroivania then this is one to avoid.

Really well put together monster tamer game the metroidvania style map was a little weird to me at first but I actually grew to enjoy it after playing for a while. There are a few QoL problems that could use improvement but overall it was a really enjoyable experience, hopefully they make a sequel in the future.

It's a sexy li'l monster-catching (or more fittingly, monster-hatching) game that succeeds to shine its own light in the shadow of Pokémon. In lieu of your usual one-fight-one-at-a-time format, it adopts a format where your 3 creatures are pitted against your opponent's 3 creatures all at once. It accentuates synergies between your team so you should aim to do the most with the least effort. The exploration system seldom feels monotonous as almost each monster has its unique overworld animation of removing obstacles, lighting up torches, placing blocks, etc. It doesn't come as a hindrance as bringing an HM slave in Pokémon is. Although the variety of monsters ain't exactly huge, each of them is very viable and balanced. Even if some ain't, they'll prolly be the targets of succeeding balance changes. However, the PVP player base is still an anthill. You can't rely on the matchmaking function but need to join the Discord and invite others to compete against you.

Super nice monster collector. Amazing puzzles. Unique look. It has a great number of team combinations that can work. Really nice game. Should be more popular. Great work to the dev team.

The best "pokemon" style game I've played. Combat is a 3v3 monster fight, where your groups take turn in using abilities. You can manually choose the order and targets. I feel like this is more interesting compared to the more common 1v1 setup as you have more direct interaction between support monsters, buffers, damage dealers, "tanks", etc. The buff/debuff system is straightforward, and I really like how it plays with the monster talent trees. When choosing your setup, you usually want to find good synergies between your monsters so you can get as many different buffs as possible, and don't have too many overlapping things as they'd go to waste. World/level design is pretty standard metroidvania, but it does its job. As you progress you'll unlock stuff like double jump, or monster abilities that allow you to get into places where you couldn't get earlier.

This might be my favorite monster collector in recent memory, truly a well rounded and satisfying experience. Tons of depth at almost every level, rewarding and constant progression, and full of creative passion top to bottom. I've seen quite a few reviews on this game talking about the combat being too slow, or the early game being boring, or the rest of the game getting boring. Personally, I think none of these are even a little true. The combat is incredible, and very satisfying to create synergies between monsters, their passive effects, and building good combo strings for ideal damage. These can be stressed to the extreme against boss battle reruns where a fast clear time is required for the best rewards, and I think it's great fun. In addition, there are features in the settings to enhance the speed of combat, which I did. Never so fast couldn't see what was happening, but fast enough that repeat attempts on challenges were more fun to experiment on strategies with. The early game is naturally comparatively slow, though... it is a metroidvania. Have you ever played one where you had all the movement options out of the gate? Of course not. Part of the formula is finding the new option to access new areas or new parts of previous areas. They handled this very well in my opinion, and the progression feels very solidly and consistently paced. The rest of the game getting boring or people losing interest is a bit hard for me to imagine, given the way the game expands as you invest into it. Monster skill trees become incredibly diverse and the depth team building can offer is very rewarding and interesting. The story might not be world shattering, but I also found it fun and exciting to engage with. The areas are distinct and fun to explore, and each new place having so many new monsters to tame with the aforementioned depth is, to me, amazing. Especially once you start seeing themed ideas in skill trees where the possibilities start to multiply. tl:dr This game is awesome, very fun, extremely satisfying, and rewards your curiosity. The game is very worth the time, and often is on such a fair sale it's undeniable in its value. I love Monster Sanctuary and I wish so badly I could wipe my memories of it to experience it for the first time again. Highly recommend.
