This game is the exact reason why Steam desperately needs a “Neutral” recommendation option. On one hand, this is Red Dead Redemption, one of the greatest open-world masterpieces in gaming history, finally playable on PC. The port itself is excellent, running smoothly and offering incredible nostalgia. If you have never played it before, you will easily get your money's worth out of the brilliant story and characters. On the other hand, Rockstar is charging $70 for a 16-year-old game that features zero graphical overhauls, no new content, and completely stripped-out multiplayer. It is a must-play title, but the corporate greed behind the pricing is a tough pill to swallow. Unless you are entirely new to the game, put this on your wishlist and wait for a special.

Adding a launcher and dual factor verification to a single player game is another example why Rockstar deserves to fail as a company.

Before you even consider buying this game, I would honestly recommend just going straight to the second game as it is essentially the prequel. If you enjoy, or if you already had the pleasure of enjoying, the second game then keep on reading. The game is great and if you've already played RDR2, you should have greater insight into the relationships of the characters in this game. I personally played RDR1 first but I believe that missing out on the buildup of relationships from the second game made some conversations less meaningful to me. You can still get a good grasp of things playing through this game alone and it was obviously meant to be playable without the backstories of RDR2 (since it came first) but I still believe that it adds a layer of immersion. So all in all, the story is great, most likely even greater with the buildup from the second game. I won't say too much about gameplay because it is effectively just the same as RDR2 but with less options and lower quality (in most cases) and so if you liked RDR2, you'll probably enjoy the slightly lower quality respectives of the same activities here as well. Honestly, some time passed between me actually playing this game and making this review so I might be forgetting some useful distinction between this game and the second which this game might have done better. This is what I'll say; The game itself is great, perhaps not worth the full price but that's for you to decide. However, as I loved RDR2 I couldn't say that I've fully experienced Red Dead Redemption without also playing this game and in that sense, it is still worth the full price. I hope this review helped you decide if this is a game for you or if you'd rather keep looking. Good luck and have fun gaming!

The game is a masterpiece. Everything around it isn't. The game itself is spectacular. Red Dead Redemption is, and remains, an absolute masterpiece. The problem is everything Rockstar has decided to put around it. Steam Family Sharing? Apparently not. Let's start with something I find simply ridiculous: On Steam, I cannot share this game through Steam Family Sharing. When I played it on PS3, I owned the physical disc. And you know what? I could lend it to a friend. In fact, one of my friends discovered this game precisely because I lent him my copy. That was normal. That was possible. That was the whole point of owning a physical game. Today, I buy a game on Steam and I can't even share it through the platform's own family-sharing functionality. And to play it, I am also forced to go through the Rockstar Games Launcher, linking my Rockstar account to my Steam account in an extremely restrictive way. So I buy the game on Steam, but in order to actually play it, I also have to submit to Rockstar's ecosystem. This kind of practice should NOT be normalized. This is bigger than Red Dead Redemption The problem isn't just Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar has increasingly been moving toward practices that are extremely anti-consumer: [*]Mandatory external accounts [*]Proprietary launchers [*]Restrictive licensing [*]Games permanently tied to external services [*]Less and less control for the actual customer And looking at everything that is currently happening around GTA VI, I genuinely think it's time for consumers to wake up. It doesn't matter how big the name on the box is. If a practice is anti-consumer, it's anti-consumer even when Rockstar does it. The only real way we have to influence these decisions is to vote with our wallets. If we keep buying absolutely everything simply because "it's Rockstar", there is no reason for them to change. And then there's the price. I bought this game physically in 2013 for around €25. Today, it costs €50. And I can't even choose to buy only the game I actually want: Red Dead Redemption is bundled with Undead Nightmare. I don't care about Undead Nightmare. I don't want it. I'm not interested in it. And most importantly, I don't want to pay for it. If I want to buy Red Dead Redemption, why can't I simply buy Red Dead Redemption? It's not really a consumer choice when the alternative doesn't exist. And since when does bundling another product automatically justify doubling the price of the product I actually want? That's not consumer choice. That's forcing a bundle. The PC port is another problem We're talking about a game from 2010, originally designed to run on PS3 and Xbox 360. Yet this PC version has recommended requirements that, when compared to the original hardware, are simply ridiculous. The original game ran on a PS3. A PS3. And now we're looking at recommended PC requirements that make this port look far less optimized than it should be for a game of this age. I'm not saying the game is unplayable. I'm saying that a game designed for hardware from over fifteen years ago should not need modern hardware to meet its recommended requirements. The bottom line The game itself is still a masterpiece. But that doesn't mean we should pretend that everything surrounding it is acceptable. [*]Game: 10/10 [*]Treatment of the consumer: unacceptable [*]PC port: disappointing [*]Pricing: unacceptable [*]Account/launcher requirements: unacceptable [*]Steam Family Sharing: apparently not allowed And precisely because I love this game, I don't want these practices to become the norm. Don't let yourselves be fooled simply because the name on the box is Rockstar. Wake up, consumers. If we don't agree with these practices, vote with your wallets. Because if we keep accepting everything today, tomorrow it will simply become the new normal. And in the end... WE ALL LOSE.

This game needs the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Account which only returns an error "Sorry, we are unable to handle your request at this time." #1.000.7. Getting this error for days now. Since I can't even create an account this game becomes unplayable and is therefore not recommended on my part, no matter how good it may be.
