Sea of Stars
Promising the Sabotage touch in every system, Sea of Stars aims to modernize the classic RPG in terms of turn-based combat, storytelling, exploration and interactions with the environment, while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun.
Pressing the action button in sync with the animations increases damage output while reducing incoming damage. Along with timed hits, combat features multi-character combo attacks, boosting, and a strategic "locks" system offering options to play with different damage types in order to hinder enemies while they are channeling powerful attacks or spells, all in an immersive take on the genre; no random encounters, no transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding.
Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up ledges as you traverse seamlessly through the world with a navigation system based on platformer expertise that breaks free from the classic bound-to-the-grid tileset movement.
Our custom-made render pipeline allows the creation of a breathtaking world coming to life by pushing the limits of 2D pixel-art games.
Dozens of original characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey. Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and other times emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being chock-full of the unexpected twists and events you’d expect from a Sabotage production.
There are many ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars if you feel the need for a change of pace in your adventures. Sailing, cooking, fishing, stopping by a tavern to listen to a song or play the infamous tabletop game known as "Wheels".....every system has been designed to deliver an experience that pays respect to retro classics, while rethinking in some areas to offer a smooth and modernized experience.
Sea of Stars’ adventure is playable in its entirety by up to three players. Allies can drop in and out anytime to traverse the world together and master the Co-op Timed Hits combat mechanic. Also available via Steam Remote Play Together.

Honestly this game should be great, but it's just not. The lock system is meant to add decision to combat, but fails pretty bad and makes combat unfun and frustrating a lot of the time. Basically the way it works is that enemies will sometimes use strong attacks, but you get a turn to try to hit them with specific attack types to stop their attack from going off. That sounds good on paper, but it doesn't work as implemented: * If you try to break locks, to usually have to save your abilities/empowered attacks to be able to do that in the number of turns provided. Enemies also take reduced damage while channeling locked abilities (60% reduced in my game). So you’re encouraged to save all your strongest damaging abilities for when enemies take the least damage, making fights a slow awful grind. * Alternatively, ignore breaking locks, and save abilities for when enemies aren’t locked. Finish fights way faster, but the lock abilities are really strong and punishing. * Enemy locks aren’t staggered, multiple enemies will use lock abilities at the same time, making breaking them impossible and sometimes leading to impossible fights due to RNG. * Enemy locks sometimes require damage types that haven’t been unlocked yet (ie requiring poison before you get a poison character). The end result is a system that feels bad to engage with, bad to ignore, and often isn't even possible to meet the conditions. The story seemed decent, the art is great, and I liked the puzzles/dungeon design a lot. But slow unfun fights really killed it for me.

I don't think a positive review is what this game really deserves, but it for sure is not thumbs down worthy. I get what this game tries to do, but it falls short on every aspect, aside from the graphics, maybe. Rpg elements are really barebones, stats are basic and have very little depth. Dialogues and story feel pretty average, nothing stands out (Characters or events) Combat is alright. Again, not much depth to it, but it compensates with good difficulty and quick time events such as parries and power ups. Hated the backtracking. In the end this is a very forgettable game which, however, you'll still enjoy playing. 6.5/10

Pros: Phenomenal art and music and fantastic battle gameplay (minus the ants that summon more ants, which summon more ants... that's wildly bad design, especially in early game). If this game were just an endless dungeon crawler/rogue-like focused entirely on the combat mechanics, or even if it were mostly that with other gameplay, I would easily sink 100+ hours into it. Issues: The main protagonists have the combined charisma of a wet paper towel. Moving around to different areas on the map feels slow and pointless. The devs, for whatever reason, made Garl take over as the unplayable main character early in the game. He should have been a dog, honestly. It feels like if you and one other person work really hard on a group project and the third guy signs his name at the bottom, sneezes in your face, blesses himself, and then the teacher gives him extra credit for creativity. The the platforming isn't platforming... it's all just "press A," that's it. There are no items needed, no balancing, no stamina management, no problem solving or abstract thought... it's all literally just "press A." What's the point in that? There are falling rocks while rock climbing, but it's just animation. The encounters aren't random. If you go where enemies are, you will fight them and only them. The only redeeming aspect of this is that the battles happen in the actual area... there's no transition into a battle scene or anything like that. And unless you level up or fail, you continue running around in the environment, which is super cool. tldr; combat, music, and art are all awesome. characters are annoying, story is typical, and all other gameplay outside of combat is super boring/lazy. play this if you have a high tolerance for corny, over the top "we can do anything as friends" vibes.

Its almost very good, but instead becomes a game few finish. Visually it's gorgeous, and feels good to play. Mechanically the combat is clunky, unfun, and often just completely against you. Each battle expects you at full resources, which results in a lot of walks back to the camp after a single fight. regular moves can reduve 70% of your health and you are encouraged to not use any moves until one of these deadly 'locks' appears... The combat lock system is supposed to reward you for clever order of play, but instead it becomes an (often impossible) goal to chase just to stay alive. 2 enemies gain lock moves that will take 3 specialized (resource consuming)attacks to remove, each with a 2 move countdown, and those moves will easily completely kill 1 or 2 characters??? They added a lot of optional modifyers to how the game and combat works to try to tweak the 'difficulty' but honestly they all seem to just remove entire mechanics or skip a lot of the player interaction. Frankly they leave it very unclear what the intended experience of the game was. More than one time a walkthrough was needed simply because I came into a room I could not see a clear way of progressing through, either because of fancy graphics obscuring the way forward, forgotten mechanics showing up 40 hours later, or just unclear pathing with no signals. Its like 90% of the way to being an amazing game but that last 10% really just gets in your way and makes it uninterresting
