Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew

I have some constructive criticism. But first, let me say that the gameplay is great. A large number of companions, each with unique abilities, makes for some fun setups. The atmosphere, visual style, art direction, and music are all great. And I recommend this game. Here are some things that could have been done much better: -The story is lackluster at best, but the biggest issue is the writing. -The banter is abysmal, sadly. Between each mission, you have activities to do on the ship that involve companion missions. While that part of the game is meant to be a fresh change of pace with comic relief, it ends up being quite the opposite. -The tasks are all busywork and totally uninteresting. The dialogue is so cringe that I cannot begin to describe it. I was fast-forwarding through most of them. The side missions are also very weak. They try so hard to be funny that it becomes irritating and bad (yes, I know the dev is German, but still). Which is a shame, considering the companions are all begging for personality, looking and acting so unique, but they are all totally destroyed by the writing. -This is made significantly worse by the voice acting, which for the most part is also terrible. Pinkus is fantastic and fits his appearance and demeanor perfectly. The same goes for John, but the rest... dear lord. Suleidy sounds like she's an NPC in GTA: San Andreas, trying so hard to put on a happy personality. It's all so fake that it totally breaks the immersion. It seems like they went out of their way to be inclusive when it had no real match or place in their game. An 80 year old non-binary undead pirate? Really? Not a soul in the world would complain if they all had Scottish accents and went ARRGH all the time. -I also think the game would have benefited from more environmental kills, as there are very few of them. -There are still quite a few bugs and QoL issues. Nothing game-breaking or major, but they can be annoying. Camera control is very janky, and this particularly affects John when he's in the below. He's almost impossible to select, it bugs out. -A lot of actions are linked to the same button, which means you'll often do something unintended, like jumping down a cliff when you meant to carry a body and so on, leading to a failed mission. -I also took issue with the way they designed the DLC. The game has a progression system linked to Badges, which are basically in-game achievements. And even though the DLCs integrate into the game seamlessly, which is great, for some reason their Badges do not count towards overall progression. This turns them into friction rather than a boost. I don't understand the logic behind these decisions. Making the Badges pool together would have made the DLCs a pivotal must-own, as they would help you unlock Virgilio, the secret companion. And seeing as only 3% have unlocked him, it seems like it would have been a natural way to go. So, all in all, a great game that falls short of being amazing, mostly due to the terrible writing. I hope Mimimi can invest some resources in better writing for their next game and elevate the experience to where it should be. PS: I just heard the studio closed, shame that. They made great games.

It's pretty OK. But in my opinion the worst of the Mimimi tactics games. Too bad the studio disbanded so there will be no new ones. I did like the setup where you can pick which characters you like, and mix and match to have different experiences. Other than that it's pretty much the same type of tactics game you've played before. What I did not like was the constant yapping and running back and forth on the ship just to progress the story. Absolutely useless padding. After finishing the story, I will not be going back to play more challenges, and I will not be buying any DLC.

After 10 missions, there's no real improvement on gameplay, it's the same enemies, same strategies being used. Not enough differences between the crew. Starts off relatively interesting and then by mission 6 you've done the same thing over and over and over and over again. Story was fine though.

An absolute must for anyone who loves "real time tactics" games: it's amazing and really well done. If you like pirate settings, you'll enjoy it even more. Too bad that Mimimi Games, its developers, are no longer making games: they did a marvellous job. 10/10

This is my favorite of all the stealth Mimimi games. The supernatural aspect lets them go wild with the abilities and you can tell they had fun making this one. Plenty of levels, lots of variance with characters and tactics, and a good hook to keep you playing after the campaign with the 100% unlock.

"Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines" set the standards for the stealth RTT genre, and it was a success. The genre eventually spread beyond WWII into the Wild West, ancient Japan, even Robin Hood’s world. In recent years, Mimimi Games became one of the strongest developers in the genre, creating masterpieces such as Desperados III and Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Sadly, this is a niche market, too small to sustain a small studio, so Mimimi decided to end its journey with dignity and pride. Before closing its doors, though, it released one final game: Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew. And that is the story I’m here to tell... The game takes us to the adventurous age of pirates, but these pirates are far from ordinary. They are cursed, and every one of them is undead. That doesn’t make them evil, though. Quite the opposite: the real villains are the Inquisition, led by its pragmatic leader, Ignacia. Every pirate has a black pearl embedded in their chest, and it is this pearl that gives them life. Even the pirate ship, the Red Marley, has a soul of its own. As the game gradually introduces its cast, we begin by controlling just one character: Afia Manicato, with a sword piercing her chest and sticking out of her back. You know right away - this will be interesting. Afia finds herself aboard the Red Marley and becomes its navigator. We learn that, when the Red Marley was still a young frigate, it sailed under the famous Captain Mordecai. The captain has long been gone, as has his legendary crew. Well, not quite gone: the crew lies aboard the ship, neither alive nor dead. To bring them back, we need a black pearl and a little mystical soul energy. The first missions focus on this very task. What’s interesting is that once you have both, you can choose which crew member to revive first. And there are plenty of options, because the crew has eight members in total, including Afia. What a colourful bunch! Toya is a ninja and the ship’s cook; Suleidy, half plant and half woman, is the ship’s doctor; Gaëlle is the gunner who carries a cannon everywhere; Teresa is a crossbow expert who fills the sniper role; Pinkus is an aristocrat and a brilliant spy, able to possess enemy bodies; Quentin is a treasure hunter who excels at luring enemies away and hiding bodies; and John is the ship’s carpenter and handyman. Most games in this genre have around six characters, but the familiar roles are all present: spy, sniper, efficient killer and dedicated support. Every character can kill enemies with blades or take a non-lethal approach. They all also carry pirate flintlock pistols with two shots (yes, Gaëlle’s cannon serves a rather different purpose). On top of that, each character has two unique abilities, and during the campaign they unlock a powerful upgraded ability as well. You can take one to three characters on most missions (all eight can join the final mission), and there’s a clever mechanic encouraging you not to rely on the same favourites every time. Each character contributes a resource called Vigor; collect 25 points and you can unlock one upgraded ability. If a character has been sitting out missions for a while, their Vigor accumulates, so they contribute more when you finally bring them along. You can complete missions with any combination of characters, but some have clear advantages in certain situations. Toya and Suleidy, for example, have shorter killing animation: 2.5 seconds instead of the usual 5. That can make all the difference when you need to eliminate a guard while another guard’s vision cone is about to catch you. Guards don’t react instantly. When they spot something suspicious, their normally green vision cone turns yellow, then red, and only then is the alarm raised. Those extra 2.5 seconds can be a lifesaver. Teresa can shoot a guard from a very long distance. Her crossbow doesn’t use conventional ammunition—or rather, it uses a single bolt that she must retrieve from the body of the enemy she shot. Unlock an upgrade, however, and any crew member can collect it - the bolt automatically teleports to Teresa. With her cannon, Gaëlle can fire enemies or even her own crewmates. Firing enemies against other enemies stuns them, but when firing a crewmate, it launches them into a hard-to-reach location. John can hide in the “Below”, a space outside reality, a sort of void where he can also stash enemy bodies. Pinkus blows pipe smoke into an enemy’s face and possesses their body. He can then walk among enemies, as long as he stays within a limited range, distract them, chat them up, and even kill them. In short, this crew is wonderfully varied, and there are plenty of options to experiment with. The game features around 9 islands. Each island can host several missions, and missions may take place during the day or at night. At night, enemy vision cones are much smaller, although many guards carry lanterns. After every mission, you return to the ship, where you can complete small character-specific missions. Each character has a chain of five such tasks, which reveal more of their personality. Some are absurdly funny: like in Toya’s story, a fish hanging on the deck decides it wants to become a ninja and asks Toya to take it on as an apprentice! Later, every character must also face a “Mirror” trial prepared by Mordecai himself. These usually revolve around a deeply emotional moment from the character’s past, or a mistake fate never allowed them to put right. All of this is woven into two or three full missions on the islands. The voice acting is phenomenal. Every character is voiced flawlessly, with plenty of humour. They all have their own distinctive accents, too: Afia is from Jamaica and speaks in a Patois dialect; Toya’s voice carries a strong Japanese accent; Teresa peppers her speech with Spanish words; and Gaëlle has that unmistakable French softness in her voice. John is pure Scottish, while Pinkus sounds like a true Prussian aristocrat. The characters talk to one another frequently, often teasing each other, and every conversation adds another layer to our understanding of them. In Shadow Tactics, Mimimi introduced what they called “badges”—essentially in-game achievements. For example: finish a mission without using ladders or vines, raise no alarm, or kill nobody. At first, you don’t know what these badges are or what their requirements might be; you discover them by accident. Once you finish the game, they are all revealed, and you can replay missions to collect them. And you really need to, because one achievement requires you to revive another, secret crew member: Virgilio. To do that, you must complete 85% of all badge progression. Believe me, that’s quite a lot of work! So, a tip for achievement hunters: look up the badge requirements in advance and start working on them from the very first missions. You’ll save yourself a ton of time. I like this badge system because it forces you to play “uncomfortably”, taking on extra challenges instead of simply doing things the easiest way. And I discovered interesting Easter egg that genuinely moved me. At some point, a cake with candles appears on a table aboard the ship. You can interact with it, and when you do, the Red Marley herself speaks directly to the player. She thanks you for all the time you’ve spent together and says goodbye, while also leaving a little hint that perhaps you’ll sail together again someday—maybe we’ll meet again in another game... It’s a wonderful farewell from the developers themselves to their players. Remember what I mentioned at the beginning: Mimimi closed because of financial difficulties. I absolutely love moments like this! I can confidently say that this is the best of all Mimimi’s games. They went out with their heads held high, delivering a polished product like the true kings of this genre—and that’s exactly what they are. All that’s left for us is to enjoy this wonderful game and remember Mimimi’s legacy fondly.
