I'm only just about 2 hours in and you can just tell in everyway how much love went into this game. The art, sound design, and the voice acting absolutely top notch. I blinked and two hours went by. At one point I literally just stopped to listen to the sound the water and wind chimes. Having a very stressful career, this game gave me the first bit of relaxing and peace I've had in weeks. Big thanks to the devs for this gem, I can't wait to keep exploring this world.

Edit: I'm debating just deleting this review, since it seems to have upset the developer so much they felt the need to comment on it twice, including trying to call me out for turning off the comments on my review. I did that because people started trying to dogpile on me, including people that hadn't even bought or played the game yet. Genuinely, the response to my review has kinda thrown me off, and if it's upset people and the developers this much, it's not really worth it for me to keep it up. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wish there was an option for a mixed review, because I don't hate the game, but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone in its current state. For the record, I finished the game in its entirety, so it wasn't all bad, I'm just very disappointed as I was really hyped for this game. First off, if you don't like rhythm games, this game is probably not for you. It's the main mechanic in the game, so if that's not your thing, I'd pass on the game. Pros: [*]The art is gorgeous. You can tell they put a lot of effort into making this game and I applaud them for that. [*]The music is fantastic. [*]I like the voice acting. Every character that speaks has voice acting which is very rare in cozy games nowadays. [*]There's universal inventory which is great. It was so nice to be able to make potions from anywhere without having to lug around the ingredients. [*]The story telling is pretty good, though did get a little boring at times. [*]There's no rush to get back to bed at the end of the night. The time pauses when it hits 10pm and just lets you continue playing until you're ready to finish the day. Time also pauses whenever there's an event, so you won't miss anything if you're halfway across the map. Cons: [*]If you play on a controller, the controls are clunky and don't make a lot of sense. It's very obvious this was meant to be a mouse and keyboard game, and they didn't seem to put any consideration towards controller players. I found myself switching between mouse and keyboard and controller constantly. [*]The inventory management is terrible. The fact that I can't just click on an item and have it automatically go into the chest almost gave me carpal tunnel. You first have to click the item, drag it into the chest, then set it down. There's also no quick stack, so if there's an item already in the chest and you want to add to the stack? You have to click and drag it into there. In 2026 inventory management shouldn't be this clunky. [*]Considering this takes place at a school for magic, you spend surprisingly little time in a classroom. This felt more like a farming game than a magic school game. This could be a pro for others, but if I'm signing up for magic school, I want to take as many classes as I can. There's only about 3-4 classes every term and every term lasts for 2 in game weeks. You learn most of your spells and potions outside of class, which is not what I wanted at all. [*]The festivals in this game are incredibly barebones. There was maybe 2 things to do at the festival each term. I was just expecting more from this, and hopefully they'll add more in the future. [*]Considering how short each term is (2 in game weeks), there really wasn't a ton to do. I spent most of the time farming and foraging. Overall, I don't hate the game, there's so much potential here for it to be good and it just misses the mark. I loved the demo and was super excited to play this when it came out. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but I just expected more from this game. Edited to add: changed my 4th con to say festivals instead of events. I meant to say festivals, but I couldn't remember the word as I was typing my review.

Edit as I have post-mean-review regret: do buy the game if you like cozy games! I'm enjoying myself a lot now that I'm not expecting like, Disco Elysium levels of writing. 😅 The character writing is still wildly varied but there's at least one I like a lot now, and some other good moments. I still dislike the main conflict though. (And they fixed spelling errors in a patch!) If Steam had a "Mixed" option, I'd be choosing it, but alas. I'm writing this to temper the expectations of anyone going in expecting that "a focus on unique characters and story" also means quality writing and thinky quests. I say this as someone who loved the studio's previous games and as someone who believes we shouldn't give games a pass on quality simply because they're "cozy!!" Unfortunately, there are many things wrong with the writing of this game that show it could have used a good editor and didn't have one. First, the amount of misspellings in the game at launch is unacceptable for a story-focused game and one written by native English speakers at that! (eg. "professers" for "professors", "Todays Letters" instead of "Today's Letters" - there's more.) Second, and I know only my English nerds will care about this, but it contributes to the un-edited feel of the writing: there's a moment where "powerful mages, renowned bards, and prodigal musicians" is said, and I thought, "huh, long-lost musicians? that's odd in this context." Later, the word "prodigy" is used several times in dialogue and -- y'all, "prodigal" is not an adjective form of "prodigy" but I think the writers thought it was. Again, something a good editor would have caught. Third, the overall story is attempting to tackle a "authoritarians tried to control magic for ~reasons~" plot which, by the end of Spring, is handled at the level of a shallow children's book. You don't have to try to force grittiness into a charming world with strawberry-shortcake fluff writing; it's ok to keep it light if that's the style of the game! TBD on if this will gain some nuance or depth over the course of the game, but I'm not super hopeful it'll be anything more than tropes & platitudes. Fourth, and related to the previous point, said authoritarian takeover is given an explicit timeframe (40 years long) yet there's a ~60yo character (who has grandchildren) who says "it was a danger to whistle when I was a child" and a seemingly ~30yo character who says "magic was banned when I was about 9" -- that math does not check out!! Putting major events and characters into a timeline when plotting a story is basic, basic writing advice. Running into this level of logical inconsistency suggests a lack of attention to Glimmerwick's internal coherence -- but consistent worldbuilding matters to good writing. Fifth: look, I played Ooblets and Fields of Mistria. It is eminently possible for small cozy indie games to have unique dialogue for all interactable characters, especially since Glimmerwick's in-game seasons are 14 days and not the usual farm sim 28 days. This is a cozy game! I want to run around and talk to everyone every day! Repeating dialogue in the first week is bad! I'm never going to talk to any non-quest-related characters past Spring because I'm sick of the repeated dialogue and some of it is so long to button mash through too! On controller, I can't even press B to get out of the dialogue menu, I have to navigate to the "Bye" line every time! Sixth, the quest writing assumes you have no brain at all and will make it explicitly clear, multiple times, from multiple characters, what you need to do to progress. I unlocked a new potion and thought, oh, I wonder which character will make it blatantly obvious when and where to use this potion to progress and voila, just a few hours later, said character shows up to spell it out! Though with the amount of hitting you over the head the devs have to do to explain that there's no time pressure in the game, perhaps this amount of hand-holding is required due to the game's target audience... I feel especially let down by all of the above because I loved Leaving Lyndow and it's on my list of "hidden gem" indie games! I played it years ago, but in my memory it's a thoughtful meditation on leaving home for the first time that touched me emotionally. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be similarly emotionally moved by Glimmerwick. Let's end on some high notes: the art is gorgeous (despite camera zoom reset annoyances) and a joy to look at. The sound design is pleasant and the voice actors are fantastic, on the whole. The music is really really good!! This might be my favorite fishing mini-game ever - I love that it's a different tune per fish, I love that it's thematic to the world, and I find it a nice balance of challenging yet doable. I enjoy the rhythm mini-game for learning spells as well, and wish there was more of it. The potion-making mini-game is also great: thinky and gets me playing it over and over to master it. There is a lot of charm to be found here -- this is not a bad game, simply flawed -- and I'll still continue playing to see where the story goes and attempt a 100% completion. I only wish the writing had received the same level of care as the art and gameplay systems, and that there had been an overall pass for polish and bug fixing before launch.

The demo already looked promising and the game is just that. It's cozy, chill and has an interesting premise where magic is linked to music. I play on Deck and it's smooth with no issues.

Songs of Glimmerwick is a lovely game overall. If you're looking for something that feels like a nice warm cup of tea, this is it. However, it's not a game for everyone, and it has a repetitive game loop. One of the reviewers described it as a game as an experience, and that feels right. This is part review, part feedback on my experience with it. -------------- TLDR: I'd recommend it, and I'd play it again. However, I'd take it a lot slower. There isn't much replayability value in it, unless you want to improve things you've done, but I'd happily pick it up if there were more quests. It's truly a labour of love. It feels a little weak and unrewarding in some of the 'game' aspects of it, but what it does well, it does really well. (Forest and Fairies won my heart!) The art style was also fantastic! As was the music. I perfected the game in 44 hours, but 4-8 hours was likely AFK/got distracted time. It could be done much faster for sure. ----------- My best advice while playing it is to let the quests sit a bit, and approach it as an experience instead of trying to be a completionist each day. I tend to play as the latter and I found certain parts of it grew quite dull and repetitive because I was doing too much of it - more than needed to be done - and the grind didn't feel rewarding. The characters have good personality, but a lot of their dialogue is repetitive, and doesn't change much beyond two-three instances of talking to them a season. I feel like this could have been improved, but with every line voice acted, it's probably a bit more difficult. I loved how they each had their own quirks, but I felt like we - as the player - lacked some of those quirks / abilities as well! In a world so filled with magic, and magic being endless, it would have been neat for us to have a couple abilities or little spells, etc. that set us apart. It would have been equally nice for us to be able to upgrade, perhaps, our skills more than what was offered. I feel like there could have been a 3-4 star system that would have allowed some increased speed, and more reduced mana cost because the food didn't feel as helpful, and farming 8 plots and you were out of energy for a good chunk of the early and mid game. Perhaps I was being too aggressive as a farmer, but it felt like a struggle until I was in winter. The quest system allows you to take quests at your own pace. It was interesting reading about players doing certain quests in fall and winter that I had completed before spring was even over. But I feel like as much as that is a boon to the game, it's also a bane. There wasn't as much to do in Winter because I had done so much of it early, and quickly, that by the time winter came, I had nothing to do, the character dialogues were feeling very repetitive, and I was sleeping away every day and having to wait for events outside of farming for achievement money. I think some of the quests, or more of the quests, should be a bit more season locked, or force you to space them out. Or perhaps the game simply needs more quests and events. It would have been nice if we could have tried creating our own potions that did things, or going on quests to craft some custom songs / upgrading songs. I was absolutely delighted by the music mini-games, adored fishing, though it didn't always feel worth it beyond the initial quest. And that's how I felt with a few areas in the game. They feel a little under utilized. Beautiful and lovely to explore. Finding them and wondering what's going to lead us there again, and a scene happens once, sometimes twice, and then returning to those areas, and talking to those NPCs again and again aren't rewarded. This all sounds a little critical, and some of it was likely because I overplayed it too quickly. Some of the handholding in the game also felt very strong with certain quests (the toads, oh my gosh the toads), but that's because I spent the days talking to everyone about them trying to gather all the little tidbits, and that's probably not how most people play - it's how I wished I could have played though! The moments of Songs of Glimmerwick that felt delightful hit very well. Forest and Fairies was fantastic. The music games were fun. The potion mini-game was delightful AND frustrating. I wanted more. The story behind it all was intriguing, and the character and story moments were really sweet. Overall, I've recommended it a few of my friends who I know this game will be perfect for, and exactly what they are looking for. I want to play it again and see if a couple decisions give me different story aspects. I think my biggest gripe with the game is that I fell in love with its bones, lore, and mechanics, and I would have loved to see more done with them.

knowing this is from the developers of Eastshade i was already really hopeful but... this game really went above and beyond my imagination with its world. every character has so much to say, the world feels so magical and dreamy, each time i go to the town i feel the same magic and awe as it's my first time being there, truly such a dream game. you can't convince me i'm not an actual student at this school. waking up every morning to get my free pretzel (because in true student fashion, i'm broke), going to whatever class i have that day, meeting friends in the common room, gardening, helping people with their silly troubles in town... such a satisfying loop. with all that said, i have encountered some bugs that negatively affect my gameplay (like i can't plant some seeds unless i move them in my inventory?), and i don't really enjoy the gardening in this game. it doesn't feel as well made as the rest of the game, or maybe i just couldn't figure out the correct way to do it yet, i don't know. i played three hours of the demo and continued from there, so i'm not a beginner beginner, and so far it hasn't really grown on me. but luckily gardening is the least of my worries in this game. i'm just here to enjoy the school life, and thankfully gardening takes up a really small amount of my day, at least so far. if you've been dreaming of a cozy witch academy game like this and you don't want to make that certain transphobic person richer, just go ahead and buy it. it's indie, made with so much love and care, and you will 100% feel that in the gameplay :)

My literal only complaint so far is you can’t select red hair at the beginning of the game (as a redhead lol)
