Starbound
In Starbound, you create your own story - there’s no wrong way to play! You may choose to save the universe from the forces that destroyed your home, uncovering greater galactic mysteries in the process, or you may wish to forego a heroic journey entirely in favor of colonizing uncharted planets.
Settle down and farm the land, become an intergalactic landlord, hop from planet to planet collecting rare creatures, or delve into dangerous dungeons and lay claim to extraordinary treasures.
Discover ancient temples and modern metropolises, trees with eyes, and mischievous penguins. Make use of hundreds of materials and over two thousand objects to build a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, a medieval castle, underwater arcade, or even a space station.

"IT'S LIKE TERRARIA, BUT IN SPACE!!!" No, it's really not like Terraria, and it's not just because it's set in space. I've got 1k+ hours in Terraria, and I don't wanna bore you to death with comparisons, so just take my word for it, okay? If you're looking for some chill, methodical exploration with a thick-ass atmosphere, you're gonna love this.

I honestly don't get the 'abandoned' complaints. Not all games are live service games, or games that continue being updated forever. Most games get to a point where the devs have finished their design document, and have nothing left to add. This seems to be one of those. They added what they planned to, added workshop and mod ability, and that's the game done. And it's a good game. It might not have been at some point, but it is now. Terraria meets No Mans Sky. Or 2D No Mans Sky. There are loads of mods that expand it greatly as well. Easy to lose hours in

You’re forced to fly to a million identical planets, mine tons of colored dirt, and complete "fetch three lumps of coal" style quests. The story is tedious, and the game is unplayable without mods because the entire experience boils down to mind-numbing grinding and endless inventory management. It was interesting for the first 20 hours, but after that, it was nothing but a grind.

This game is bone-dry and devoid of meaningful content. There's a thin storyline, little meaningful progression, and no real reason to explore. Planets are procedurally generated, but they're all basically the same with slightly different colour palettes. The devs never fulfilled all their promises and essentially abandoned the game a few years after release. The only saving grace is the mods, but on its own it's not worth your time.

Genuinely I think the only way to fully enjoy this game is to download a ludicrous amount of mods that add entirely new mechanics that this game sort of half-botched or never even thought to add. The vanilla experience is incredibly slow, tedious, and frankly lacking of clear content and direction and is a hodgepodge of various ideas that never were fleshed out past planning stage. I could only ever honestly recommend this game if you're a terraria megasweat looking for something even slightly similar, or if you enjoy seeing all the different ways this train wreck of a game can be modded so heavily by fans to make it worth at least $10.

While I have enjoyed Starbound when it was being actively updated, this game is abandonware carried entirely by its mods. And sure, while games do eventually enter a finished state which means no more updating, there's still things that were meant to be added around the beginning of its life and have just been passed up and put off. The monster creating competition, the very one where Poptops came from, had three runners-up who were supposed to get their creations added too. All three had more interesting and complex monster designs than the Poptop and all three have still not been added to this day. These creations are so old and forgotten that not even modders remember they exist. The Virorbs in particular had such potential and variety, but they're nothing more than a motionless stuffed toy in the universe of Starbound. Starbound has a great combo of core ideas. Planet travelling, colony building, monster catching, randomly generated worlds and creatures and weapons, the rideable mechs and boss arenas being places you'd go to rather than build one yourself. But you have things like the humanoid AI being limited and terrible, unable to handle guns and their energy levels properly, and there's a memory leak issue that causes the fps to steadily degrade the longer you'd play, requiring you to close the game every half hour for steady performance. And this issue has been present in the game since day 1, it's still not fixed. Sure, this game might be worth something positive if you play it with enough mods. But that's not the base game doing the heavy lifting, it's just serving as a platform for fanmade creations to pretend that the devs still care about it. So I cannot in good conscience make this a positive review.
