You know what? I'M IMPRESSED. And that doesn't happen very often. Still Wakes the Deep is a damn good horror game. An oil rig in the middle of the North Sea. A massive storm. Everything falling apart around you. And something absolutely disgusting crawling through the darkness. Beautiful. The atmosphere is incredible. The rig feels cold, claustrophobic and completely miserable. Every creaking piece of metal, every distant noise and every dark corridor makes you feel like something terrible is about to happen. And the creature? Horrifying. Exactly what I want from a horror game. But there's something I have to complain about. It's too damn short. Just when I was really getting into it, really enjoying the atmosphere and getting attached to the characters... It's over. Excuse me? I wasn't finished. I wanted more. More exploration. More horror. More of that incredible atmosphere. More time on that beautiful floating nightmare. And speaking of the characters... The voice acting is TOP NOTCH. Seriously. The performances are fantastic. The emotions feel genuine, the dialogue sounds natural, and the Scottish accents make everything even better. You can hear the fear, panic, anger and desperation in their voices. That's what makes the characters feel alive. The sound design is fantastic too. The storm, the machinery, the metal, the water, the screams... Everything makes the rig feel alive. And that's what makes the short length so frustrating. I wanted more. Not because the game feels unfinished. Because it was actually THAT good. I'd rather finish a great horror game wanting another few hours than spend twenty hours wishing it would end. Still Wakes the Deep delivers an incredible atmosphere, great horror, fantastic characters and some seriously impressive voice performances. 9/10. Absolutely loved it. Just... Make the next one longer. I wasn't done being entertained. And when I want more... You know you've done something right.

Still Wakes the Deep is a walking sim horror game, where you play as electrician Caz McLeary trying to survive and escape the Beira D oil rig after the crew were turned into monstrosities. Set in Scotland, the devs hired Scottish actors to voice the characters, some of whom you might have seen or heard in UK-based productions. It adds an extra layer of immersion. The story has a Lovecraftian atmosphere which I really like, though it kinda feels like The Thing and Dead Space too at times, but in an oil rig. At launch, this game sadly lacks some features such as chapter select and cloud saving, but they are added later on, so you can transfer your progress and also replay your favorite parts. There's also extra features like the ability to turn off navigation adds (the yellow paint many people dislike) and a black-and-white filter. I personally love these new features, since the game has no manual saving and chapter select would be helpful in replays or achievement hunts. If you enjoyed walking sim horror games and Lovecraftian-inspired titles, Still Wakes the Deep is one you should try. It's also kinda more in-tone with SOMA with the nautical and infestation theme. My only complaint is that some of the levels could be too dark, cramped, or repetitive, but hey, real-life oil rigs are like that too I assume.

Good graphics, interesting - and original - location and I also liked the design of the monsters, but the gameplay is boring. It's a, on rails, walking sim with no combat or any interesting puzzles to solve, you just go straight and press left or right mouse button when the game tells you. And stealth sections are simple and boring, you move 5 meters from one safe space to another and wait few seconds for the monster to turn around... and then the monster will spot you anyway because these encounters end in a scripted way.

Still Wakes the Deep is probably the most fun I've had with a horror game ever. I'm not huge into the genre like some others, and I could see the walking simulator DNA of this game maybe putting some people off. I think that would be a great shame. The Chinese Room have made A LOT of walking simulators, but this one very much rises above the other I have played. I cannot name an area in which it did not blow me away. The art design and atmosphere is impeccable, the way in which this game builds tension using nothing but environmental design and art direction is insane. Without giving away much, the environment changes so much throughout the game as the events unfold, making everything feel so wrong and uneasy in a way that reflects the heightening stakes of the story. Speaking of the story, it very much stands as an extremely engaging example of cosmic horror. It manages the difficult balance between well written and expanded upon characters and an interesting plot which was refreshingly original and very compelling. This game absolutely stays true to cosmic horror as a genre, giving me the same feeling as watching John Carpenter's The Thing for the first time did. The level design felt simple but effective. The game is always clear on where to go, sometimes too much, if I'm honest, as it falls into the yellow paint trap pretty badly. Gameplay, in general, is split into parkour, running and sneaking sections. All three have their level design changed based on the story events, anchoring basically the entire game to its story. It absolutely works for this sort of game. A lot more of the threat and tension feels more like presentation than actual difficulty, but that makes this accessible as well as fantastic. I am intentionally vague because I think people should go into this as blind as possible. It is now one of my favourite games ever, and It'd recommend it to anyone.

Но от Still Wakes the Deep я ждал намного большего.

Still Wakes the Deep was an excellent and fun horror game that I was pleasantly surprised by. It had several creepy and truly gruesome moments, but the best part was it reminded me a lot of the movie The Thing but on an oil rig. I want to add as well, that this is the first game by these devs I've played. Now let's get to it, let me give you a quick run down of my pros and cons along with my recommendation. Pros * The story takes place in the North Sea, I believe all the characters are Scottish which is nice change of pace. So there is a bit culture difference on how this story is told. The dialogue is great and the best part is a lot of the dialogue doesn't match the subtitles because you are hearing the Scottish words and the subtitles are saying the English "translation". It wasn't a bad story, but I think there's a lot to be desired. You don't really ever understand what's going on or why it's happening * Had several good scares and the monsters in SWtD are pretty F'd up, they are thing of nightmares and they made the game immersive * This isn't a tough game with sophisticated puzzles or with monsters you have to shoot, it's a walking simulator with the occasional hide from the monster areas, parkour, and quick time events. It's exactly how I like my horror games to play honestly. More about the story and suspense. * All the characters for the short time you get to know them, seem interesting and the voice acting is a big part of that * Visually the game is pretty good and runs well most of the time. I did run into a few glitches and spots where my fps dropped but nothing too serious Cons * With a $34.99 USD price tag, the story is only around 4 hours and I think that's pretty short for the price * No replay-ability, once you've beat the game there will never be another reason to go back and play it. No collectibles or alternate endings that I'm aware of and that's again why the $35 price tag is tough pill to swallow * The story was a pro and I lightly mentioned it already, but things just happen and you never find out why. I guess there's a dlc but judging by it's reviews apparently nothing is explained in it either. I think that kind of sucks, it's just a giant mystery and that's too bad because I think the monsters in SWtD deserve more explanation. * I used a controller to do my play through and sometimes for the QTEs I felt my buttons wouldn't register so I'd die. Not sure if that's the same for mouse and keyboard To sum it all up, I had a good time playing SWtD and my criticism is mostly in the price. I have no doubt if you like what I wrote in my pros list you will enjoy this short horror game. The best thing to do though is, make sure you buy it on discount, otherwise two thumbs up!
