Great art style and inventive mechanics. Too much dialogue that breaks the flow of the gameplay. Runs great on steam deck.

I'm not gonna rag on this being a very simple game. It's a game catered to kids, so I shouldn't get too mad at the simple stories and plot beats. What's frustrating about the game is that it has a really good premise, but it just does NOTHING with it that's interesting. All the puzzles about swapping words and flipping the book pages had a ton of potential, but it did nothing interesting with those ideas beyond just introducing them. The 3D stages were also a bit disappointing, with only one stage being unique. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I left this game feeling kinda disappointed, and feeling like it could've done so much more. Cool final boss tho, prob the best part of the game. 5/10

No geral, gostei bastante.

Y’know… After finishing The Plucky Squire, I can’t help but feel like something doesn’t quite feel right about this game… Could it be the story? The gameplay? The graphics…? And after overthinking it for quite a while, it finally hit me: The Plucky Squire is a game that quite literally has a LOT of good and interesting concepts and ideas on paper… Just that… I think… it’s REALLY missing out one big thing called “depth.” Like, sure, it has SOOOO many interesting gameplay mechanics, especially during the puzzle-platforming sections… Like how there’s this core puzzle sentence-building mechanic to change/spawn stuff in the world, the core puzzle ability to “control” the book and jump between pages, tilt the book to interact with the environment, use stamps to “stop” or “kaboom” things, and constantly switching between 2D and 3D platforming. Then you suddenly have “boss levels” in each chapter disguised as either a boxing minigame, an archery minigame, a rhythm game minigame, a bullet hell minigame, a bubble shooter minigame, or even a stealth minigame, to name a few. And, as someone who enjoys having lots of different gameplay ideas in a game, I actually LOVE this kind of stuff. Even the basic 2D Zelda-ish combat as part of its core gameplay is “alright”. It’s simple, but somewhat engaging. But the problem is… it’s all just too shallow, I feel. Like, for one, the upgrade system is generic enough that you can become surprisingly rich pretty early on in Normal difficulty, till the point where you’re “suffering from success” and have nothing left to buy despite still earning money till the end of the game. The combat works, but you can spam attacks easily and the enemies aren’t particularly complex on the “normal” difficulty. The platforming sections look cool on paper but doesn’t really evolve much aside from giving you a rocket jump ability that one time. The puzzles have interesting ideas but rarely develop them far enough. The story is super generic with characters that you don’t really develop an emotional connection with at all till the point where they do that one generic emotional moment in a story where they “kill” a main protagonist to make you feel sad but, really, my reaction is more like “Oh. Okie. 👍” about said person’s death… And THAT’S the thing that bothers me about this game: it’s like dating a stereotypical guy because he “looks” good on paper. Y’know, he rich, has dat good face card, he tall, and he fit asf… But aside from those things? Nothing. No emotional depth. No character depth. No deep history. No… “substance”. Like, he’s “that” and all… But… That’s really it. And I feel like that’s The Plucky Squire, in a nutshell. I mean, you COULD argue that this is a kids’ game, but honestly, I disagree… Just look at Paper Mario. THAT is also a kids’ game, yet its story, characters, world, lore, and gameplay can still have a surprising amount of depth. And it’s even worse considering how both games are oddly similar with both taking ordinary paper/stationery objects and throw them into a fantastical make-believe world, with a king-like villain attempting to alter reality with the biggest difference between the two is that Origami King uses a turn-based RPG system, while The Plucky Squire takes on a 2D Zelda-ish approach… Hell, even Disney Pixar movies are made for kids, but they’re STILL capable of entertaining adults. Why? Because there’s usually something underneath the surface. Like, you can be cute, simple, colourful and accessible, but you can ALSO have something sophisticated underneath all of that. And THAT’S what makes this game so frustrating to me. Because I can SEE the potential. I can SEE what they were trying to make. I can SEE how this could’ve been something REALLY special… But… It just doesn’t quite get there. In the end, though, I find it REALLY hard to recommend this game to a gamer like me who enjoys puzzle-platformers but wants something “out of the ordinary”, tbh. It’s a game with SOOO much potential that FEELS like it could've rivalled a Nintendo-level game but ultimately falls short because so many of its ideas has never gotten the depth they deserve. A “meta” story that sounds cool on paper but feels dull, characters that has the potential to be very “emotionally relatable” but I couldn’t care less about in the end, and a core gameplay loop and various interesting mechanics that simply aren’t given enough depth or time to become truly memorable. So… I don’t regret playing it, you might enjoy it, especially if you’re a kid or that one adult who had never played games before, for some reason… But for me? I’m just… Not satisfied. 🤔
