Feels way more substantive than previous DLC in terms of what it offers. The world space itself is way more interesting. There are more boss fights and 3 of 4 are great. I would go so far to say that the final boss is the best fight in all of Dark Souls 3.

It is questionable that the conclusion to the world's story is revealed not in the base game, but in its DLC. However, it would be foolish to deny that the expansion itself is excellent.

For years all I heard was how good this DLC was, how it was the crowned jewel of the Souls series, and how you were doing a disservice to yourself if you played DS3 without playing through TRC. This is a lie - not only is this not the crown jewel of the Souls series, it isn't even the best part of Dark Souls 3. TRC relies heavily, HEAVILY on gimmicks. The entire intro sequence to this DLC feels like a different game altogether. This is fine, I suppose, but not what I was expecting. You will not be fighting, for the most part, you will be sprinting while avoiding laser beams coming out of the sky, dodging infinitely spawning enemies, navigating a poison marsh while laser beams are coming out of the sky, and finally dodging ten billion arrows shot at you by invulnerable phantoms. The intro to this DLC is extremely rough around the edges, and I wish someone had told me what to expect going in. Lots of good gear can be found in this DLC, which is its saving grace. There are a lot of cool weapons to mess around with and good rings to make progress easier. You will need to be extremely durable in order to survive because the damage on every enemy has been turned up to 11, where even the most basic enemies will be chunking you. I know this DLC is supposed to be played in the endgame, but it is a little silly and feels they went a little overboard with the numbers on a lot of the enemies. I enjoyed the city itself, which is an actual Souls level, and there are a lot of cool things to find and neat sights to see. The Ringed City excels most at being visually appealing, and there's quite a bit of fan service for fans of the first Dark Souls to keep you going. However there is also a lot of frustration to be had here in the wrong places. The Judges that summon ten billion archers to snipe you come to mind, which turn environments into puzzles where you have to find the spots they won't be able to hit you as you approach the Judge himself in order to stop it and allow you to explore the area. He respawns, btw. There are four bosses, one of them is fun. The other three are either annoying or boring. The Demon Prince is a little too much visually, it becomes difficult to tell what is happening in his second phase and I died once or twice just because I became confused. It felt like the Bayle fight from Shadow of the Erdtree except it didn't have the cinematic aspects of Bayle or the buildup - you just drop in and fight him. I have no idea who he is, why I'm here, or what his purpose in the area is. His first phase is very well done, but his second phase goes overboard. Whatever he's not that hard. The phantom boss is just sort of a joke, I flattened it instantly and was shocked it was over so quickly. It really wasn't so much a full boss as it was just a phantom invasion. Midir has entirely too much HP and likes to attack you then fly across the arena, so you spend more time sprinting after him than actually fighting with him. I did not like this boss, this is the same issue I had with the Elden Beast in that I don't like running across the arena for over half the time for a chance to hit the boss once before it sprints away again. He's just a gigantic wall that deals a ton of damage, but with patience he is really not that hard. His moves are very readable and although he has some unfavorable hitboxes just play cautiously and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Gael is a very fun fight, I enjoyed it a lot. His second phase also has a bit too much going on but it's not as visually confusing as The Demon Prince and I like that based on your positioning you can completely invalidate some of his moves. He has a very well thought out moveset that rewards aggression in a way that makes you feel smart for seeing it. Very cool, there should have been more fights like this VS all the gimmicks the DLC threw at me. All in all... it's ok. I will probably play it again but it will take some time before I feel like it's worth it. This DLC is better than Ashes of Ariandel, but way way below the base game of Dark Souls 3 and doesn't even come close to Artorias of the Abyss. It's the final send-off to the Souls series, and I can't help but feel Dark Souls deserved something better.
