1 / 8

From the depths of darkness, a dragon soars.

A new dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA, the developers of Nioh.

184 AD, Later Han Dynasty China. The land is overcome by chaos and destruction. The imperial dynasty that prospered for many years is now about to collapse.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dramatic, action-packed story of a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms. Players fight off deadly creatures and enemy soldiers using swordplay based on the Chinese martial arts, attempting to overcome the odds by awakening the true power from within.

Wo Long refers to a crouching dragon, and also refers to a hero or person of greatness who is not yet known. This is the story of officers, who will later become heroes, during their ‘unknown’ period, and also the story of a protagonist’s rise from being a ‘nobody’.

Demons in the Kingdom A dark fantasy set during the chaotic Three Kingdoms period, the narrative vividly tells the tale of a militia soldier’s strenuous fight for survival during a Later Han Dynasty infested with demons. It’s madness in the Three Kingdoms like never before!

Awaken the Power Within Defeat deadly enemies to boost morale and awaken the power from within! Overcome adversity through unique new strategies, including battle styles based on the “Five Phases”.

Live by the Sword Renowned for ruthless strikes that can change the tide of battle in an instant, sword practitioners of the Chinese martial arts gracefully change pace as they shift between offensive and defensive maneuvers. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition is at its best when combat becomes a conversation between aggression and restraint. Deflection is the mechanic everyone notices first, but Spirit is what really holds the system together. Attacks, Martial Arts, and Wizardry can keep pressure going, but spending too aggressively leaves you vulnerable to stagger. Push an enemy far enough in the opposite direction and Spirit Disruption opens them to a devastating Fatal Strike. That makes every exchange a question of timing. Winning neutral does not mean attacking forever, and backing away does not mean giving up momentum. Once that clicked for me, bosses like Lu Bu became far more enjoyable because I stopped treating them like endurance tests and started reacting to the actual rhythm of the fight. The Good [*]Combat Rhythm: Deflection, Spirit, Martial Arts, and Wizardry create a fast system built around knowing when to press and when to disengage. [*]Morale: Battle Flags, Marking Flags, and Fortitude directly change how dangerous each battlefield becomes. [*]Build Variety: Weapons, Martial Arts, Virtues, spells, and Divine Beasts give plenty of room to develop a personal fighting style. [*]Bosses: The strongest encounters punish greed and reward learning when an offensive turn has ended. [*]Exploration: Side routes, flags, upgrades, and equipment make exploring battlefields mechanically useful rather than purely optional. [*]DLC: The three expansions add worthwhile weapons, bosses, enemies, and story content instead of feeling like disposable add-ons. [*]Setting: Team NINJA’s dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms interpretation gives familiar historical figures and events a distinct identity. [*]Voice Acting: The Japanese cast is strong across the board, with Kazuhiko Inoue’s measured performance as Cao Cao standing out in particular. The Bad [*]Battlefields: The best maps reward exploration and verticality, while weaker ones can become repetitive or unnecessarily confusing. [*]Visual Clutter: Some effects-heavy bosses make attacks harder to read than they should be in a game so dependent on reaction timing. [*]Art Direction: The strongest supernatural areas look excellent, but too many battlefields settle into similar reds and browns. [*]Color Readability: The Spirit Gauge relies heavily on contrasting colors without offering a dedicated colorblind mode. [*]Linux Performance: Proton 10.0-4 produced severe frametime stalls during my testing, while GE-Proton 10-15 ran dramatically better. Summary Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not simply Nioh transplanted into China, nor does reducing it to a Souls comparison explain what makes it work. Its identity comes from how quickly offense and defense trade places. Spirit rewards pressure but punishes greed, Morale changes the balance of each battlefield, and Wizardry, Divine Beasts, weapon builds, and deflection all feed into the same push-and-pull combat loop. The Complete Edition is also the version to get. Its three expansions add meaningful weapons, bosses, and battlefields while giving the combat more ways to test the same fundamentals. Uneven stage design, visual clutter, and technical roughness keep it from reaching its full potential, but the combat remains excellent and distinctly Team NINJA. Score: 8.0 / 10 Verdict: Recommended

KOEI TECMO's idea of fun that has never changed since Nioh 1: *The boss should spam it's attacks, deal fast and insane damage, does AOE as almost as big as the map itself, instantly dodge the player's attack out of nowhere *The same 3 maps must be used over and over again with pointless purposes of missions *30 FPS cutscenes *Useless NPC summons *Battle Flag exploration system being tied to your power level should be considered a crime

If you like eastern martial arts and want to play a game about it, this is a great one. The game today is way better than when it launched. They patched it a lot and solved all the major issues. It's sad the people didn't revisit it to update the reviews.

The Bag of Paprika Chips Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not a bad game. It's best described as a Romance of the Three Kingdoms based loot-focussed Souls-lite spectacle fighter, but unfortunately its not really doing anything meaningful with those descriptors. You get a ton of loot drops, but dealing with those is a chore. Not only due to the sheer amount, but also because of a startling lack of variety in drops. There's many different weapons as shown on the wiki (more with the dlcs), but you'll be getting the same ring pommel sword model over and over again, just with a few differences in stars and equipped abilities. Selling and salvaging the rest is a chore as you only have 500 inventory slots total and that's for items too. Enemy variety is extremely limited, bosses are continually reused and combat is very samey outside of gimmick bosses like Taotie. Too much focus on spectacle, not enough on substance though there's a few fights like Zhang Liao that do give something of a challenge, if not much. The end result is a game like a bag of paprika chips, you may enjoy bits of it, but it won't wow you. It has a ton of slog, an overly easy final boss and just too many checklist things to do.

Edit: i finished the main game, most the side missions, and 1 dlc. i stand by what i said. its easly a 7.5 all day. graphics can be kind of wonky with shadows in the water, but other than that and one underground segement with wet walls, was pretty good. 07 dont get the hate and mixed review. i mean its not perfect. but this is just as good as nioh and it has a hub zone that makes it feel more like a traditional rpg/ souls. combat is excellent imo. deflection is snappy, similar to sekiro. got spells , counter phases of elements ( water counters fire, ect.) story is interesting enough. and im running it at 4k no problem. honestly glad i skipped it until now. this is exactly what i needed 7.5 /10 easy

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not a bad game. The combat is fast and fun, the RPG systems are decent, and there is enough build variety to experiment with different playstyles. When everything works properly, the fighting mechanics are easily the best part of the game. The biggest problem has always been performance. Low-FPS cutscenes, frequent frame drops, and general instability hurt the experience, and even in 2026 the game still does not feel properly polished. The story also became pretty boring for me after a while. 6.5/10 - Mixed feelings.

Played when it released on gamepass way back and just decided to do another playthrough due to the sequel announcement. Honestly this game is great. The good: The parry system is SO SATISFYING OMG, it's some of the best parrying and is almost on par with Lies of P in terms of the parry systems quality. The buildcrafting, classic Team NINJA nioh-esque build crafting with loads of stats and weapons and passives etc, pretty good and fleshed out with loads of build variety. The weapons and magic: Varied weapon times, loads of fun to use mostly any of them to be honest, some DLC additions that are great fun. The magic system is interesting, I only use it for a few dps spells and buffs but it is pretty interesting and leans into melee combat nicely too. Exploration: Mission based game but you have a morale system where you get increased levels while exploring think of it similar to elden rings scadutree fragments where it works ontop of your character level to give additional power. You can rush a level and fight the boss but it'll be harder due to not exploring or take your time to build morale to make the fight more fair. Also mission replays are advised to get higher quality drops etc. Co-op: So while not for everyone the game has a co-op system up to 3 players where you can make a lobby or just join for one mission randomly. You can beat the whole game as a stack with shared progression, there is also the choice to use AI companions throughout the story who you build affinity with and get their weapons and armour as a reward for doing so. The co-op works pretty well and enemy aggro is generally quite well handled but playing the game entirely solo with no companions is still a completely viable option and you aren't punished for doing so. Additional content: On top of the main missions there is a bunch of side missions and extra stuff to do including 1v1 boss fights and short segments of some missions with harder enemies etc. Good replay value and I believe there is extra additions in NG+ too HB: The devs did something interesting with stamina and levelling, So you have a level cap of 150 I think that increases after NG+? However you have unlimited free respecs which are great. Also the stamina system is interesting, Mana/Heavy attacks/Skills/Posture all sharing one bar which builds up positive when landing attacks and goes down when getting hit/using abilities is a really fun balancing act and I hope they expand on it in the sequel instead of giving a traditional bar. The bad: The story: okay the actual character stories after boss fights are well presented but the general story loop is "Go to battle, one guy runs ahead, gets elixir, turns into monster, you fight him and he dies". There are some really cool characters in the three kingdoms conflict who get turned into monsters and aren't expanded beyond that which is sad. They did lu bu dirty. The way they killed him felt really lazy personally given how strong he is. The performance: When I first played this game I had a 2080 super, the game ran at around 40 fps average at that time? Now I have a 4070super and the game runs at a solid 60 on the highest settings at 1440p. The game won't drop below 30 even on weaker hardware like I listed but the performance is not fantastic. So if your PC was considered mid end or lower even in 2023 you may run into performance issues. Honestly those are my two main complaints but honourable mention to the gimmick boss you have to break his limbs to do a crit, worst boss in the game and it isn't even close. I would highly recommend wo long to anyone who likes their share of "parry slop" and getting the complete edition on sale to grab the DLCs in a bundle is a good idea too. Only cleared DLC 1 so far but it was pretty fun and pretty challenging.
