PLEASE READ : this dlc is good and you should not use this review to make the decision to buy the dlc or not, i just want to point out an issue i had with this dlc. Base factorio mostly depended on you to figure out a clever way to get around a problem the game creates. Almost every problem has multiple solutions that you can choose from ranging from something simple that you can just make and be done with, or come up with a unique solution that ends up helping your factory grow. This is where i have an issue with space age. This dlc is less figuring it out in a clever way, and more figuring it out in a way the devs intended to. For example, on space platforms you need to store something, so you decide to place some chests, but too bad you cant because you have to store everything in the hub. Ok. a little annoying but not fun ruining. Now you arrive in fulgora or gleba and solar power isnt enough for you, so you decide to use steam, but oops! this is too easy so you cant place boilers or heating towers! better use nuclear reactors! You want to use recyclers? nah thats too easy, you can only use them in specific planets. A good example of less creative ways and more intended by the devs is in aquilo. When you have too much ice, in base factorio you would have a choice : get rid of it in some simple way, or use it somewhere else so not only you would use up the excess ice, but you would get something in return. In space age? Maybe throw the ice in the ammonia lakes just like you would throw the stone in the lava in vulcanus? No. Maybe use recyclers to get rid of all the ice? No they patched it. So what do you do? Turn the ice into water and use it in oil processing to turn it into fuel to burn it for heat. The problem? You probably noticed the excess ice issue while making ROCKET FUEL using different recipes. You no longer get to choose if you want to take the easy way, or the more creative way, and most of the time you are basically forced to take the harder route. You no longer get to put something aside to fix later and are forced to do everything at once. Now im writing this review while waiting for my space platform to bring me stone for the refineries that i didnt need to use in any other planets besides vulcanus (in vulcanus you can tell that you will need refineries, but in aquilo none of the recipes there require refineries and only use chemical plants. The only time you need to use it is just to get rid of that excess ice. It also does not help that the only planet you cannot get stone without delivering it from somewhere else is aquilo) This one issue i have with this dlc makes me prefer the base game, though it is a good dlc still and you shouldn't let this review make the decision for you if you should buy this dlc or not. I just want to point out this issue.

It's a legit old school expansion. Remember the good old days of PC gaming? When you had a high quality favorite game and then a couple years later they came out with an expansion, and it cost almost as much as the base game? And you couldn't wait to buy it, because you knew: This wasn't some cheap crap that created more value for the shareholders. It wasn't going to just be unlocking some low level content that really should have been part of the base game. It was going to be transformative. Like Brood War & Beyond the Dark Portal were for Starcraft & Warcraft II. Like Throne of Bhaal was for Baldur's Gate II Like Bloodmoon was for Morrowind Like Cataclysm was for Homeworld Like Lord of Destruction was for Diablo II Like Opposing Force was for Half-Life Like Rush Hour was for SimCity4 These are the expansions for legendary games that are virtually inseparable from the entire way people remember them. The kind that made you come back to something you've already played to death, and you put another 500 hours after you already spent 1000. You felt like it was worth every penny. This is Factorio Space Age. Factorio is one of the best games ever made. It defines the genre. If you loved Factorio, buy this. You get to replay Factorio again for the very first time. And it is awesome.

Lot's of nice quality of life improvements, but generally a lot of the systems and base game aspects are made worse for the DLC. Mod's alleviate some of these more problematic components, but frequently you'll be placed into a situation where the game is made less fun because of the way that the DLC has been designed. I have extensive experience with several overhaul mods, and have played a very long K2SE playthrough before as well, and my perception is shaped quite a bit by Krastorio 2 and Space Exploration. I'm going to be speaking in basics, rather than specifics of mods, but... In SE, ships are less useful than they are in SA, as they are primarily there to go to different planets, asteroid belts, etc. Once there the player can ship stuff to that location using cargo rockets. Cargo rockets biggest expense for the player is that the distance they cover dictates how much fuel they need. However, they offer a huge storage capacity, that the player can use to ship stuff between colonies. The DLC I believe sees the aspect of ships as a wasted opportunity, and engineered a way to make them essential. Space platforms, function like trains in space, but are far less functional than trains, or the radio/cargo system of SE. These space trains limit what you can place on them, no drones nor storage containers are two examples. Furthermore, their unique structures seemed designed to be as frustrating as possible to use efficiently; especially before asteroid reprocessing. The engines for these platforms has its fuel layout positions in an explicit way that forces the player to design systems and placements envisioned by the developer, rather than allowing creativity. Furthermore, shipping cargo between the planet and a platform, is limited to 1-ton per rocket trip (a very very low amount for some items). Forcing the player to spam rocket systems and their components, to have an even slightly quick way to ship goods. The quality system is fun in principle, but you can't use better materials to craft an inferior product. So the quality system is actually a bother for late game, rather than something you can augment throughout your playthrough, as a assembly machine with a high quality item available to it, will ignore it, unless all the other components are also of that quality. Again, in my opinion a poor design choice, and one that for me personally had high quality ingredients just blocking lines, rather than imo what it should be, which is a quality item increasing to likelihood of a equal or greater quality item created by its consumption. The quality system also is a bad band-aid for late game progression, as overhaul mods like K2 add a plethora of advanced structures, encouraging new builds and new goals for the player, instead the DLC adds very very little late game structures that are not planet specific, and instead paints a circumstance where if you want a better electric furnace, get a higher quality one. There is soooo much more I could add about why I don't like the DLC overall, but these two systems in particular seem to weigh the most on my mind at this moment. I could speak to the lack of any real late game content, or the decision to move base game technology behind late game off-planet resources. Personally, I like the idea more so of getting new tech, buildings, items, etc. from off-planet research, and then needing to use off-planet resources for those off-planet pieces of technology.....rather than base game structures and technologies being now locked behind X planet's science pack for some arbitrary reason. Base game tech should be augmented and enhanced by DLC content, not made worse because of the DLC. For every positive, I feel that I have an equally annoying caveat to add. I think there are some really nice and well thought out improvements to the base game, some of which I don't want to play without, but for all those good things, I truly dislike the rest of it. Each new planet is well crafted, and their unique structures are interesting, but I feel like maybe the DLC should've taken more inspiration from what the modding community has shown to be popular for more experienced players. Make of all this as you will, as many players love the DLC, and will be quick to defend it, but at the very least I don't think the DLC offers $35 worth of content when it costs the same as the base game, but offers a fraction of the content.

the basegame was already one of the best games yet, but now with the 2.0 update the content has doubled in amount. its sad that wube will stop making large updates after the upcoming 2.1 update, but the game is ALREADY massive. we should be looking forward, not backwards. less game changing updates will enhance the modding community! tho i am still sad for... bout 2k hours in this game and it has been a massive ride. my dad showed me this game and it was the first game that we really played years ago, and after a massive clash it brought us together again, so this game isnt just a game for me. its a massive memory bubble in my head, and that bubble wont ever pop. itll stay with me forever.

The base game is extremely good. I wish I had just done another playthrough of that instead. Maybe with some mods. The Space Platforms are not fun. You think up ways to solve things and implement that solution, only to find that there are arbitrary restrictions on things that were not presented up front. Things previously taught by the game itself suddenly are not usable. Without explanation - you have to google to find out why. There are tooltips, there's the in-game Tips and Tricks section, but the information is not there. Maybe if they presented things properly as they are, it would not be such a demotivating thing. They could have said "Solve this, but you can't use any of these things", but they don't. You only know you were not allowed to use X after you tried building something using X, and for a game where you plan things out before building them, that's really bad. They really want to force you to solve things their way, and you have to magically know what that is, or try things and keep rebuilding until you figure out what it is they want you to do. In the base game, you could choose your own challenges. You could choose to beat the game not using Logisics bots, not using rails, or whatever you felt like doing. I like that game design philosophy a lot better. Here it becomes jumping through hoops to progress.

If you are concerned about the price, I'll just say you will absolutely get your money's worth. Just straight up. Now... Selling a DLC for the dead-exact same price as base game, while also stating on both the base game and this DLC's steam page that "We are not planning on going on sale any time soon"...... Yeah it probably makes anyone wonder if they are going to like it or not. Both costs over 90$ (CAD) which is a bit steep for an Indie game but it's been worth every penny. If you like the OG Factorio even a little bit you are absolutely going to LOVE Space Age. Theres so much more to do. Even though on the surface it doesnt look like it adds alot but oh my good god you get sucked into each planet for hours. EACH. FOR HOURS. Its insane how this game hacks your brain (if you like Logistics and Automation stuffs that is) BTW: Its **not** an overhaul like the Space Exploration mod. Space Age does shift some of the research tree around but it's very much a proper Add-On. Logistics/Construction Bots are a slightly harder to get which was annoying, on the first time around, not a big deal on subsequent plays. The Real big ones are Artillary+Artillary shells and Spidertrons which are locked behind the late stages of 2 different planets, Vulcanus and Gleba. And its my personal recommendation to go to another different planet entirely, Fulgora to make Spidertrons easier to get on Gleba. This sucks but it mostly means dealing with Bugs on Nauvis (the basegame planet) can be much more annoying. It forces you to use 'interplanetary logitists" which is a whole other thing you need to set up, its a hassel but its rewarding. HOWEVER: theres mods that fix this and make the research easier. also straight up, I'm not the most financially secure, I pirated the Space Age. annnnd I felt bad. Thats how good this is. Also F*** Gleba. Go to Fulgora and get Tesla Turrets first. Trust Me. Also also: Quality and Elevated Rails are techically seperate mods so you can play vanilla with them or Space Age without. (I do not recommend the latter at all) But they should 100% have been Free. You don't *need* either of them in Vanilla Quality, in particular is extremely powerful without Space Age. Clearly both mods were designed for the DLC but still, It feels kinda wrong.

This is a proper expansion, it adds sooo much beyond what is the end game of the base game. Each location (space, each planet) comes with unique challenges (and I do mean unique, your bases will look nothing like one another) which is very nice. It also has a different design of late game of "quality over quantity", the new buildings allow making stupidly compact builds that are a lot better than anything you could do in the base game (without even factoring Quality), so it really feels different than just scaling the same setup up. I do have some gripes with a few mechanics (cough Quality but at least you can finally disable it properly in 2.1) and some puzzles that I don't really like (like Fulgora), but overall it's still so much. My save that won took 126 hours, so that speedrun achievement's par being 100 hour is not messing around. Also love the music.

I do not play Factorio without Space Age since it's release. The amount of extra game content and replayability makes this essential to my playthroughs. The amount of work they did to make this expansion is enormous, I highly recommend reading through Wube's website blog posts 2023-2025 to see their work on Space Age in more detail. The music is also outstanding and worth a full review on it's own. I would highly recommend this DLC to anyone even remotely interested in the base game.
