Endlessly replayable masterclass in world building and raw atmosphere. Still very fun to play too if you build for what you want to do, I must have 7 or 8 playthroughs to my name now, all specialising in their own way to keep the game fresh and am still finding new approaches and solutions to problems I never would've dreamed of the first time around. The first Fallout is as desolate and oppressive as it gets, and does a surprisingly tactful job of showcasing both the resilience of the collective human spirit, and the corruption of it the second positions of power become vacant. Everybody's got a different solution to make the wasteland work for them, all have valid points, and many will commit indefensible actions to get there. And the game makes no judgments as to whether you join them, stop them, or just pass straight through. Only your fellow wastelanders can judge you, and they often will. It accomplishes this all while managing to maintain a callous black humour that never feels out of place or over exposed. The shades of grey tickle me to the complete opposite end of the pink scale. Mark Morgan's sountrack is quite possibly one of the most immersive of all time, and arguably gets even stronger in Fallout 2. An aspect sorely missing from the modern bethesda titles but frankly, most of Fallout's original soul is. Its not perfect, nothing is. But its a testament to what's possible when a few passionate people have unwavering commitment to a unique, and original vision. Its got its own voice that even its own successors, true or spiritual, can't truly mimic. I truly believe every RPG fan owes it to themselves to give this a shot at least once, I bounced off it my first time around since it is such a drastic departure from how even modern turn based games play, but once you approach it on its terms and allow yourself to adapt, there is an all-time gem awaiting you in here. (My time in game is massively under estimated because mods use their own .exes. Highly recommend 'Fallout et tu', to bring FO1 into FO2's engine to remove some of the more frustrating aspects of this game and to restore certain optional cut content)

It's an old game and I really suggest to play with a mod to fix some bugs in the game. The gameplay is really old school RPG feeling you have multiple paths to choose for each place like based on the quest you done.

Hey kiddo, Handsome Jack here... and I just played the original Fallout, and apparently someone looked at the end of the world and thought, “You know what this needs? A cheerful little vault dweller wandering into the wasteland with a gun and absolutely no idea what they're doing.” Finally. A new employee. You start in Vault 13, get handed a water chip problem, and are basically told, “Go outside and figure it out.” That's it. No proper training. No corporate orientation. No complimentary Hyperion weapon. Just good luck, idiot. And then you step into the wasteland. Oh, kiddo. This place is a nightmare. Mutants, raiders, ghouls, radiation, murderous wildlife, psychopaths, and somehow the biggest threat of all is realizing you accidentally spent all your ammunition on something that wasn't even important. The role-playing is fantastic, though. You can talk your way through situations, sneak around, steal things, fight, manipulate people, or make decisions so catastrophically stupid that I'm genuinely impressed you survived long enough to reach the next town. And the SPECIAL system? Beautiful. Strength. Perception. Endurance. Charisma. Intelligence. Agility. Luck. Basically, seven different ways to determine whether you're a legendary wasteland hero or a confused idiot who gets killed by a rat. Naturally, I maxed Charisma. Because I'm handsome. The writing is also surprisingly dark. This isn't some cheerful adventure where everyone gets a happy ending. The wasteland is brutal, the factions have their own agendas, and your choices can have consequences. You can help people. You can hurt people. You can completely ruin an entire settlement. You can become a hero. Or you can become the kind of person who walks into town, steals everyone's food, shoots the mayor, and walks away wearing his pants. Freedom. That's what I call it. The graphics are ancient, obviously, and the combat is clunky by modern standards. But honestly? I don't care. The atmosphere and writing carry the whole thing. It's weird, bleak, funny, brutal, and completely committed to letting you make your own terrible decisions. 9/10, kiddo. An absolute classic. A fantastic foundation for the entire Fallout series and proof that you don't need photorealistic graphics to make a world worth getting lost in. I'd give it a 10, but the game doesn't let me buy the entire wasteland and turn it into a Hyperion subsidiary. Missed opportunity.

Fallout 1 is a pretty interesting game and can be considered a classic RPG, but even so, this game has a lot of problems that can easily ruin your playthrough and mood. 1. Build importance Literally most of the stats are totally useless in this game, and some builds that you can try to create are unplayable. For example, one-handed pistols can be considered the weakest weapon class in this game (they are literally unplayable), but for some reason, you can find different skills for empowering them (they are still going to be useless). The game literally creates the illusion that you can play with pistols for the whole game, but it's not true because they are literally unplayable. It seems that they decided to do this only because they wanted to make this game look a bit bigger. Nothing more. 2. A lot of different bugs NPCs can attack you everywhere for no reason. Some features can work poorly sometimes. 3. RNG RNG works pretty strangely in this game. It seems that the game is just trying to make everything look harder with this unfair system. You can see a lot of strange misses and a lot of strange crits in literally every battle. Conclusion This game can still be pretty interesting, but a lot of different problems can ruin your enjoyment of it. If you really want to try Fallout 1, then prepare to suffer like in a Souls-like.

If you consider yourself a massive fan of Fallout and find yourself getting tired of replaying the newer games over and over, do yourself a favor and look past how "old" this game is and give it an honest shot. This game is incredible. It's short compared to the newer fallout games, but has much more depth and probably the best main story in the whole series. It takes a bit to really get used to keeping track of all your quests and all the information you need but it is well worth it. The only real complaint I have with this game is that in battles with a large # of enemies the combat can feel SUPER slow, even on the highest combat speed (and I guess I wish the game was longer/had more content, but its length is 100% fine as is).
