Fez is a casual platformer with a unique perspective-shifting puzzle mechanic and 100+ levels to explore and find secrets in. The platforming puzzles are fairly easy but never repetive, and the world feels fun to explore. The non-platforming puzzles (rooms with secrets/riddles) range in difficulty from fairly easy, to satisfyingly difficult to nobody-on-the-internet-has-solved-it-yet. The good thing is, you need to complete very few to progress. While the game provides some excellent tools for the platforming/exploration part (a very handy tree-style map with lots of markers), it doesn't provide any tools at all for the non-platforming puzzles. There are multiple languages to decode, but apparently no in-game translation tool to capture and translate text using your guesses. So the whole translation thing becomes less of a puzzle and more of a chore after you have figured it out. Moving beyond gameplay, the game features some great pixel art with lots of variety across areas - which really drives you to explore the world. The soundtrack is also good enough, but the story is not particularly remarkable. Anway, I wouldn't expect an indie game from 2013 to excel at every aspect. Overall, would recommend buying on sale. But don't hesitate to use guides after 40~48 cubes to prevent this otherwise fun game from turning into a chore just for the sake of completion.

Totally worth the money. Really well-thought-out level design, it's amazing to see an indie team put into this cozy puzzle game the complexity of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Metroid game level-design-wise combined with such unique and genius gameplay mechanics as they did. It's kind of like my relationship with Franz Liszt; I probably won't spend another second on it, but I recognize such exquisite craftsmanship when I see it.

The game is fun at first and I liked the concept, but don't bother playing it to completion -- unless you're stuck in 2013 and think narwhals and bacon are funny. The game suffers from lots of bugs, glitches, sometimes crashes, and a lot of minor inconveniences that add up to a lot of time wasted. And the whole thing is a monument to the ego of the person who created it lol when you do everything there is to do in the game and click new game+ for the second time, it gives you Phil Fish's 3D glasses. Yeesh. TL;DR fun. not that fun. game breaking bugs, bugs that can delete your entire save file, and lots of old memes that didn't age well. any challenge the game has is just from the inconveniences its full of like how you have to backtrack across a convoluted map constantly

A hidden gem. I would have never played it if not for the Steam "Hidden Depth" bundle. The puzzles were very enjoyable to solve. The gameplay mechanics are pretty original as well and they worked great. For anyone who likes this type of games, this is a must play title.

Fez core idea is so clever that I spent most of my playtime waiting for the game to finally do something great with it. I went in knowing almost nothing beyond the central gimmick: you’re moving through a 2D world that can be rotated to reveal different perspectives, paths and connections. That alone immediately sold me on the possibilities. Add an open-world structure, hidden secrets and an entire language to decipher, and I was ready for one hell of a puzzle game. Then I actually started playing. Very early on, I missed one cube bit in the opening area and spent around 15 minutes wandering through rooms trying to figure out where the hell it was. I eventually found it, learned how the doors indicate places you’ve already visited, and moved on. Fine. Early-game learning experience. The bigger problem was that the puzzles themselves feel too simple. Climb some vines. Rotate the world. Jump to a platform. Rotate again to make another platform closer. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. I kept telling myself it was just the tutorial phase and that the mechanic would eventually be pushed into more interesting territory. Occasionally, it was. Some valves require you to think ahead about how structures will align after rotating them. Moving platforms can force you to plan several steps in advance. There were brief moments where I finally thought, yes, this is what I wanted Fez to be. Then the next area would go straight back to climbing vines and rotating platforms. That was probably the biggest disappointment. The game has this fantastic spatial mechanic, but most of the time it uses it as a navigation tool rather than the foundation for genuinely challenging puzzles. I rarely had to stop and think, and outside of a couple timed sections, the platforming itself wasn’t demanding either. That might have been for the best, because the controls aren’t exactly precise enough to make difficult platforming particularly enjoyable. The world structure frustrated me even more. I would enter doors, follow several branches, emerge somewhere else, eventually return to a hub and realize I had absolutely no idea which route I wanted to revisit. Part of the problem is that so many areas blend together mechanically which makes very few locations develop a strong identity in your head. Instead of thinking, “Oh, I remember that puzzle; I need to come back here later,” I mostly found myself thinking, “Was this the place with the vines? No, the other place with the vines.” TL;DR; Fez concept is brilliant. The presentation has its charm. The soundtrack has aged well and there are a few genuinely clever puzzles that briefly demonstrate how much potential the central mechanic had. There just aren’t enough of them. Unfortunately, the cleverness is buried underneath repetitive environmental puzzles, weak platforming and an unnecessarily convoluted world that turns backtracking into a chore. 5/10

love the core concept of platforming around on a world you can rotate. The game looks beautiful, movement feels great and I would never get tired of the soundtrack. The game just never has a clear path forward, you have no way of knowing what's important. But what makes it unplayable for me is that the puzzles are incredibly obtuse and cryptic. Its a game that's not gonna be for most people. I gave it a try and it wasn't for me.
