Forgotten but Unbroken

1 / 8

Forgotten but Unbroken offers a unique perspective on the WWII turn-based strategy genre. Inspired by real stories and events, the game introduces fresh mechanics never before seen in the genre. Players will experience defense missions, historical characters, and unique "micro" features based on reality.

From the special abilities granted by wearables to the absence of magical healing, "Forgotten but Unbroken" provides a realistic and immersive gameplay experience.

Elite enemy units, such as the feared SS troops, are designed to spread fear among players, affecting their aiming and overall performance.

Additionally, the game allows players to forge strong relationships with allies, who may send elite soldiers to assist in battle for a limited time, adding a strategic layer to gameplay.

Deep and Complex Experience

Forgotten but Unbroken delivers a deep and complex gameplay experience by intertwining historical events with personal narratives. Players will encounter a newspaper feature that reports on real events from WWII, such as the Battle of Kursk or the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. These global events are presented alongside the personal story of the main character, Commander Martin, whose life is profoundly impacted by the events of the war.

This dual narrative approach not only provides players with a rich historical context but also immerses them in the emotional journey of the main character.

Real Protagonists of WWII

The game features real characters of WWII, carefully & respectfully selected for their legacies. Players have the opportunity to meet and interact with these protagonists for a limited time during the game, adding a layer of authenticity and reverence to the gameplay experience.

Soldier Management

The game features six classes of soldiers, each with unique abilities and perks. Players can customize their soldiers and manage their traits, which affect their performance in battle. Traits such as "Iron Will" can significantly impact a soldier's morale, while physical traits like "Sickly" can affect their disease susceptibility.

Base Management

Base management is a crucial aspect, allowing players to heal, train, and maintain the morale of their troops. Structures such as hospitals and armories can be built to improve various aspects of the base and troops. Additionally, players must consider factors such as weather and disease, which can impact the effectiveness of their base and troops.

Region and Campaign

Forgotten but Unbroken is set primarily in central Europe, with a focus on Czechoslovakia. This region's strategic importance during WWII makes it an ideal setting for the game, as players will navigate the complex political and military landscape of the era.

Diplomacy/Politics

Forgotten but Unbroken incorporates a diplomacy and politics system that allows players to impress allies through successful missions, thereby increasing support. Relations with allies can impact the type and level of support they provide, adding a strategic element to player decisions.

This game is pretty hard to enjoy. It's janky, oftentimes frustratingly opaque, and all around unfocused. There are some pretty great ideas, feels like a sort of This War of Mine meets XCOM, or even Valkyria Chronicles, but just doesn't really have a lot to say, and even less to do. The majority, and I really mean majority, of the game is just spent waiting around. You really just pass time in your camp waiting for a new mission to pop up, you have no real agency or objectives to pursue. Games like XCOM parse this waiting time by giving you research objectives or enemy activity to counter, but in this game all you do at camp is just wait. Missions will eventually pop up, but most of the time it's just a single mission that rewards some food or resources to upgrade your base, occasionally actually giving you a choice between two missions, though they're all generic, repeated missions regardless. There are assault missions where you have to push forward, either clearing an area of enemies or picking up an objective, usually both anyway, or defense missions where you have to hold a position against a few waves of enemies. The stealth mechanics in assault missions are somewhat interesting, very similar to XCOM 2's concealment, though with melee attacks that don't break stealth. Assault missions become rather trivial once you have a German disguise or two, as you can really easily clear entire missions without breaking stealth. Despite a variety of classes and weapons, there's a few that are so absurdly powerful that everything else becomes meaningless. Having a squad of snipers with long range weapons, I used Springfields with scopes, trivialize most combat encounters. You can pretty handily acquire these skills and weaponry by 1943, and the rest of the game won't challenge you much once you have these tools. While I do like some ideas from the combat, it's rather simple as you mostly only have shooting or throwing grenades as your options. I get that it's a serious WW2 setting, but there's a reason other games in this genre spice up combat with special abilities and items. The plot is very unremarkable. I honestly forgot most of the details of the starting cutscene because it's so entirely secondary to the WW2 setting. Despite this, there is one mission around the middle of the game that follows up on this plot detail of the main character's love interest being abducted, and then finally concluded at the very end of the game. The rest of the game, as previously mentioned, is just spent waiting around at camp or doing inconsequential missions. You're periodically given various news reports of events happening around Europe, primarily centered around Czechoslovakia, as the war progresses, but you'll mostly just be biding your time with the meta knowledge that the war will end come May 1945. The game really failed to impress on me many details of struggle or suffering, as the rather removed news reports didn't even have any impact on the main characters. This game really could have served to focus on something more personal than just general war-weariness. It's just honestly boring. There is something interesting here about a war story that doesn't glamorize war and actually is just a lot of waiting around, but I don't really think I can credit the developers as that being their intent.

The mechanics are just terrible. I've noticed a trend in recent years with tactical games where, in order to make it more difficult, they simply make all of your attacks miss. Regardless of how close you are or how skilled you are with the particular weapon. There's nothing tactical about this game. It's just annoying.

As a huge fan of tacitcal games (such as XCOM 2, battle brothers etc etc) this one had been on my radar for a while. It is a fun games, but I have some criticsm for it. 1. The base managment system didn't have much depth. I never felt in danger of runing out of stuff and I maxxed out all my buildings by late 1943. 2. The disguse system was broken. When you got acess to diguese system, it was really easy to beat the levels. That is my criticsm of the game, now for the positive. 1. Good custimations of your troops. I enjoy that you were able to give your guys all kind of uniforms and weapons. 2. hard but fun battles. Sometimes, the battles were really hard, but I did enjoy them. I am looking forward to the creators next game.

Genuinely a really well made game, its not well known by any means but the combat system of it is even better than XCOM 2 i'd say. My only grimace is that i'd like more missions to be offered to us so we can pick and choose which to deploy on instead of a fair bit of downtime between 1 option coming up.
