Max Payne – Still Peak After All These Years ★★★★★★★★☆☆ (8/10) Peak story. Peak game. Peak fun. I first played Max Payne when I was a kid... and never finished it. Not because it was too hard. Because those nightmare sequences scared the absolute life out of me. I genuinely couldn't bring myself to continue. Fast forward to today, and... yeah, they're still creepy. Thankfully, this time I managed to push through and finally finish the game. I picked up the entire Max Payne trilogy for $8, and now I'm playing all three back-to-back to finally understand the story. Back when I was but a little squirt, I didn't even speak English. I had absolutely no idea why Max was shooting hundreds of people. I just knew it was awesome. The story still holds up surprisingly well, and the comic book presentation gives it a style that even many modern games don't have. The only downside is that the game definitely shows its age on modern PCs. Thankfully, the community once again proves it's carrying the gaming industry on its back. Just search for: Max Payne 1, Complete FixPack - 2025 Edition by darkje Install it, and you're pretty much good to go. It's amazing how a game from 2001 can still be this much fun. Sure, it has some rough edges, but the atmosphere, storytelling, and iconic bullet time make it easy to see why Max Payne became such a classic. Now if you'll excuse me, I have two more Max Payne games to play... and hopefully no more childhood trauma waiting around the corner.

a golden gem a timeless classic nyc mob family crime aesthetic iconic gameplay functions punchy story/presentation for the time sam lake and james mccaffrey (rip dear friend) uniquely masterclass rockstar/remedy should not push out a game that can even launch on modern systems though! downloading unsigned signatures of random exe's to get the game working is a bit of a recipe for disaster :( it wouldn't take that long to fix and most of the work is already done but because it's so 'old' it shouldn't be maintained properly anymore??? but rockstar have become incredibly scam-like in their recent years... apart from the hassle setting it up. i fkn love this game so much thank u remedy <3 9/10

Should not be legal to sell a game in this busted of a state. Right from the beginning, the audio is completely cut. The narration is literally what gives this game it's unforgettable personality. No one should have to go download third party mods to make a game playable while the devs and pub continue to make money off of it. Shameful. Game is great, but I cannot in good conscience recommend the steam version

Games a masterpiece, unfortunate that even with fixes theres a chance it straight up will not work and constant crashes before even getting into the first level. Emulation is your best bet to replay this or play for the first time, for some people the fixes work but theres still a majority that it doesnt, this is just due to bad compatability with modern systems.

Finished this on my Steam Deck in one day. Still one of the best games/story after all these years. Gameplay still rules, the facial expressions still kill me, and I love getting one shot by enemies. Yes, there is a workaround you may need to get it running, however it's not that difficult like some reviews/comments state. Once you get it running, let the nostalgia hit you and feel the Payne. Also love that Remedy still continues to make quality games to this day.

The game is good, but it needs 3rd party files in order to be playable. Even after fixing the major problems, it still has frequent bugs and a sometimes even crashes.

Max Payne is the game that put Remedy Entertainment on the gaming map. It was a critical and commercial hit that still has a very loyal and dedicated fanbase who eagerly await the remake of the first two games. 25 years ago we were introduced to one of the best third person shooters and one of the most iconic protagonists in all of gaming. Exciting gunplay that feels like it has barely aged and can still stand toe to toe with some modern games thanks to an amazing bullet time implementation and a story told through graphic novel panels make Max Payne age gracefully and still stand the test of time. If you still haven't played it, then I highly recommend picking it up instead of waiting for remakes. The game is available across many different devices (even smartphones!) though really, it's a game meant to be played on PC.
