It used to be good fun. The straw that broke the camels back for me is the addition of the harpoon gun. Its a game about pirate ships fighting other pirate ships. Big cannons, ship maneuvers, repairs, positioning, cannon aim, etc..... Now its a game about call of duty kids boarding at will with harpoon guns. They then jump around with swords cuz you cannot hit them if they keep moving. If they kill you they just camp your ship and keep killing you on respawn, if you kill them they just waisted a ton of your time where u couldnt do any of the ship operations. My last two sloop vs sloop ship fights were losses where the other ship NEVER fired a cannon ball at me, they shot themselves in my general direction, i avoided them because i know how to steer, they boarded with harpoon gun cuz it shoots forever, and they just kept doing that over and over. I ended up just pulling up sails and letting them have it cuz it was a waist of time. I know, I know, boarding was always a thing and a valid strategy. But there were ways to try to prevent boarders, make it hard for them, or punish them by kicking them off and having them float in the water while their ship is at risk. Now anyone can harpoon the ladder of a ship from ridiculous range, and even if u hear it, and throw them off, they just harpoon again, and again, and again. No fun left to be had here.

Convença seus amigos a comprarem o jogo. Entrem no navio confiantes. Puxe a âncora. Deixe um amigo para trás. Aprendam a navegar. Bata em uma pedra e nas ilhas. Aprendam a consertar o navio. Encontrem uma frota inimiga. Sejam completamente humilhados. Percam todo o tesouro que levaram horas para conseguir. Descubram que não faziam ideia do que estavam fazendo. Repitam esse ciclo por horas. Recomendo!

I genuinely don't understand why the developers continue to support and reward PvP aggressors so heavily. Nah, lets make one legendary negative review for once. The biggest problem is the complete lack of balance between PvE and PvP players. There is no meaningful protection, no matchmaking, no skill-based separation and no real alternative for players who simply want to enjoy the game's PvE content. You can have 50–100 hours in the game, encounter someone with thousands of hours, and suddenly you're expected to fight a player who has spent years mastering every PvP mechanic. If you lose, apparently the answer is simply: Git gud or Spend 1,000 hours learning PvP. -> ♥♥♥♥ that. I bought this game because I wanted to play, chill, explore, do PvE content and have fun with my friends. I don't want to nolife the game for hundreds or thousands of hours just so I can defend myself against people who have nothing better to do than hunt down players with significantly less experience. And that's the part that pisses me off the most. You're essentially forced to become content for someone else. You can spend an entire evening doing voyages, Tall Tales, world events or whatever else, carefully building up your loot. Then some veteran crew comes along, sinks you in a few minutes, takes everything, and moves on to find another ship. 0/10 experience when you're trying to enjoy PvE and repeatedly become someone else's free PvP content. 7.5/10 if you can actually chill with friends, meet people, talk and enjoy the game — and wait for the next PvE content and improvements. EDIT: 8.9.2026 Don't bring up Safer Seas unless you actually verify what it offers compared to High Seas. It's heavily nerfed and doesn't provide the same progression, Emissary gameplay, reputation and access to PvE content/cosmetics. It's not a real solution for PvE players. SOLUTION / INSPIRATION: ARC Raiders: PvE-focused players could be placed more often into PvE-friendly lobbies instead of PvP sweat lobbies. World of Warcraft: A "PvE/Baby Mode" where PvP is completely disabled. You can't attack or be attacked, but you receive reduced rewards (e.g. -25–50%) and are marked on the map as PvE. Other players, expect Alliance ships, cannot board your ship, you cannot board enemy ships also. Let PvP players fight each other. Just give PvE players a meaningful way to enjoy the game without being forced into PvP.

Should be a nice simple, casual game. And it has all of the mechanics and gameplay loops to offer that. The game fails to deliver casual however, with the forced focus on PvP worlds. Its an unfortunate case where there is not enough mechanics to warrant competitive PvP, and too much forced PvP to consider it a relaxed PvE game, so what you end up with is toxic PvP players in the full "high sea's" mode and more Casual PvE players that are forced to play with reduced content and progression via the "Safer Sea's" mode. Does a less toxic PvP player base exist somewhere? Probably, but the average player is highly unlikely to meet them. Should be great, but it just fails for me as a PvE or PvP game equally which would easily be fixed by just allowing people to play PvE sessions with increased PvE based risks. (More Skeleton ships/fleets for example) with lesser rewards.

A game about stealing treasure from other players after they’ve spent hours collecting it. Pure gold!
