Honestly? This one’s hard to recommend. The 1960s Cold War setup is genuinely cool…there’s something about facing an alien invasion with sixties tech and government secrecy that makes the whole thing feel scrappier and more desperate than your usual XCOM. The aesthetic does a lot of heavy lifting early on. Problem is it doesn’t really go anywhere with it. The premise sets up something interesting and then just sort of… doesn’t cash it in. The AI is terrible. Your squad sticks to walls, stands in fire, and generally behaves like they’ve never seen a gun before. But the enemy AI is equally hopeless so it kind of balances out in the most chaotic way possible. You can get away with murder because nobody on the field, yours or theirs…has a plan! It also crashed. A lot. Steam Deck and a decent gaming PC, didn’t matter. Same result. Thankfully it saves often. If you’re an XCOM completionist it’s a curiosity. If you’re not, there are better ways to spend an afternoon.

I am an XCOM fan. More accurately, I am a UFO: Enemy Unknown fan. So I will tell you up front: Do not think of this game as an XCOM game. We got the firaxis games, we can give this game a fair shake. Which makes it into... an Okay game. It's okay. It does have one twist, one little trick that it uses and makes so many small details very funny.

This game has been in my library for a really long time because I love X-Com games. But I was always put off by the fact that it wasn’t quite that. I just checked it out. It was a waste of time... The biggest problem is that this game appears to be an X-Com game with a pretty good story, but it isn’t turn-based—it’s a hybrid of a third-person shooter and a turn-based game. The boss fights are annoying, the levels are basically ugly, and the essence of X-Com is missing from the game. I started on Veteran difficulty—that was a mistake—then switched to the easiest setting, but it was so boring. The second difficulty level might have been enjoyable if I’d been able to improve. I couldn’t coordinate my team—the squad members are dumb; they get themselves killed; basically, they just follow along mindlessly. The abilities aren’t very good, and using them is repetitive, but by the time I got anywhere, the boss would show up and kill my character. I don’t think this is a game you can play for years—at most, if you play on the basic difficulty and are interested in the story, which isn’t that bad, but I think it’s better to just watch the gameplay videos on YouTube.

Absolutely worthless game - after about 20 crashes and various fixes, the game still doesn't want to work properly. I might've tried a couple more times if not for the fact that the intro credits are unskippable and all the menus are terribly coded.

It’s a relatively old game, so the gameplay and graphics reflect that. I owned it on the Xbox 360 back in the day, and when I saw it here on Steam, I decided to grab it. I hadn't actually finished it back then. I probably only played it for about three hours and never went back to it. I have no idea why, though I really should have. It’s quite entertaining but it might not be a massive blockbuster, but it’s definitely fun. I picked it up for 10 euros including all the DLC, and it was well worth it. (If anyone is having crashing issues, stick to the default setting when launching instead of choosing dx11. that solved the problem for me, at least.)
