The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.
Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.
Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.
And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

A very basic JRPG that was the starting point for a sprawling story that meshes anime, history, religion, and political intrigue that's been going on for over two decades. Other than it's paint-by-numbers gameplay, this game is only held back by being the first entry and a slow pastoral setting that's all setup for the games that come later. That said I should note the save file does transfer to the next two games with bonus content and variations on future dialogue. The story is about two young teenagers Estelle and Joshua who joins a guild whose focus runs the gamut from finding missing pets and changing light bulbs to . And that's all the story I can give without spoiling over 15 games. Graphics-wise, it looks like a PS1 RPG and you can play it on just about any computer from the last two decades. I recommend if you get miffed by missing anything over the course of playing 100+ hours that you either use a guide or get very comfortable with the gameplay loop of: -Talk to EVERY NPC you can possibly talk to within the bounds given. -Explore and do non-story related quest. -Talk to any NPC you interact with as part of those quests. -Do a story quest. -Repeat. -Also use a guide still, otherwise you are going to miss something you didn't expect and kick yourself for it (check the vacuum). And sometimes the choices that the game forces you to make does not have clear answers or the answer was against your expectation. I guess battles are technically also part of the gameplay, but it's very generic tactical JRPG for the most part except for the turn system. You get bonuses depending on when you take your turn and can use special attacks at anytime to interrupt the enemies and take bonuses that were for whoever that turn was on. You build your character's spells and stats with FFVII materia-like gems that fit in your totally-not-magic magic steampunk pocket watch. The various combos give access to spells that if you want more oomph, but hitting with a stick works just as well and is Estelle approved. The music is mostly what you expect. Traveling through forests and plains, lots of soft woodwinds and strings, city music is bright and poppy, caves are discordant and ominous, and battles are... Jazzy? The music is ok, but the only real standouts are the opening and the final dungeon tune. For Falcom music, it's a low point honestly. It gets a lot better in the later games. That all said the remake is out that updates the battle system to something more punchy, but this version still has its charms and this translation gives it a bit more personality around the edges (and the treasure chest messages).

I somehow never experienced the magic of TITS, despite TITS now being 22 years old. Shame on me. With each passing year, the fanbase for TITS gets bigger and bigger. Nowadays, TITS is massive, and all the better for it! I've barely played with TITS so far, and can already tell you that TITS is amazing. I'm sure that any guy would agree -- after all, who doesn't love coming home after a long day of work, and destressing with a relaxing night of TITS? If you're looking for a nice, juicy, fun, and bouncy time, then TITS would be a solid recommendation. TITS truly does live up to the name.

This game is PEAK. Still holds up even in 2026 (ty turbo mode). The ending of this game had me at the edge of my seat, and I can't wait to play the next one.

Trails 1 may be the simplest and fastest(?) game in the series, but it is still one of the greatest game I have played due to the amazing story, gameplay, and great humor that doesn't even go down in quality or feel dated, I wholeheartedly believe that this game is one of the best ever made and is a must play for all RPG fans.

utterly sucked into this thanks to the recommendation of a friend. the story and the world really grew on me and certain game mechanics heavily activated a certain autism in me(i love the orbment stuff so much). at one point i stayed up playing this game for 8 hours straight which I've not done with a jrpg in a long time. i'm tremendously thankful for games like these that can do that to me. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ seared to pieces by its ending so much. and what a setup for the second chapter. the same friend just gifted that to me for free knowing that I was going to wanna play it immediately after this. i can't wait to get started. aidios bless this genre of games and how much my life has been enchanted by them my whole life. the legend of heroes is defining me in a big way i think.
