This review is based on 100% completion and 46.8 hours of gameplay. Recommendation: Would I recommend the game? I would. This isn't a bad little game, especially for a souls-like. It is on the easier side, and while it's not an amazing game with deep, well-crafted mechanics, it was fun for the time I spent with it. That said, it is not without its faults, and I do think there are a decent number of issues that, if addressed, could have made this game something really special. Firstly, the visuals are really great. I love the way this game looks. The handcrafted environments and enemy designs give it a great aesthetic, although I would have liked a bit more enemy variety. It gives me strong Dead Space vibes in terms of the setting, but with a much lighter tone. While the areas are fairly small, the connecting corridors, unlockable shortcuts and train system all help give the game a nice flow. The sound design and audio throughout the game were good for what they were. The voice acting was also done well with the material the actors had to work with. I just think the writing itself needed to be more compelling. On that note, the narrative is a big issue for me. It is basically non-existent, and while I understand they were going for a more typical souls-like experience where the story isn't handed to you and you discover things as you go, I just don't think it was done well. The start is strong. It's interesting, and you genuinely want to learn more. But from that very first cutscene where you choose your starting gear, it feels like the game suddenly jumps ahead without giving you enough backstory, setting or context. This continues throughout the experience, with NPCs not really telling you much, and the audio logs and environmental storytelling also not giving you enough to really piece things together. I understand what they were trying to achieve, but I don't think they found the right balance between what to tell you, when to tell you, and how to tell it. Which sucks, because this is a really interesting IP that I would genuinely like to learn more about. For me, a masterclass example of this would be the first Dead Space. You go onto the Ishimura on a mission without really knowing what to expect, then discover what has happened as you progress. You slowly piece everything together, and it's done in a compelling way. That's something I just didn't get here. Instead, this game leaves you feeling more lost than intrigued. The gameplay is also very hit and miss. I played the entire game on controller, and for the most part, that was fine. The biggest issue, which I hope they ironed out in the subsequent game, is the lock-on camera. This makes combat extremely annoying and much more frustrating than it needs to be. You can't block properly unless you're locked on to the enemy that is hitting you, selecting which limb to target sometimes doesn't work well, and swapping between enemies is also very annoying. All of this makes fighting multiple enemies a massive pain, to the point where you'll often want to fight them one at a time for most of the game. This makes the game go very slowly, especially since whenever you "rest" or use the crafting/med station, every normal enemy respawns. Bosses and mini-bosses are the exceptions. So, the biggest issue I had with the game was definitely the camera during combat. The combat mechanics themselves were OK. I liked the different phases of the bosses, but they were all very similar and didn't have much variety in their movesets between phases, which made them very easy. Personally, I thought the normal enemies throughout the game were harder than most of the bosses. If the bosses had more diverse movesets that they switched between, making the fights a little less predictable, I think they would have been much more enjoyable. But for what they are, I thought they were fine. Switching between limbs and targeting armoured or unarmoured parts was cool in concept, just a little finicky in practice. I did like the idea of cutting off limbs to get blueprints for new gear, although I think it would have been cooler if you salvaged the equipment directly from the enemy rather than needing to craft it afterwards. Something more like actually taking the gear from them. When it comes to the DLC, I thought The Good, the Bad and the Augmented was pretty mediocre. It is essentially just completing missions with modifiers applied, and I personally found it uninteresting. However, A Walk in the Park was a completely different story and one I very much enjoyed. It gives you more backstory about how you ended up there and what was going on, while the DLC's setting and gameplay were just really fun. The only issue I had with it was that I tackled it towards the end of the game. By that point, it was very easy, and story-wise it didn't really make much sense for where I was in the main game. Again, the pacing felt a bit off. But besides its placement in the overall experience, I really enjoyed it. Overall, it's not a bad game, just not a great or particularly memorable one. If you're looking for a souls-like on the easier side to try out, this isn't a bad pick-up. I think the base price is fine for what you get, although you'll probably want the two DLCs mentioned above. Because of that, I would consider getting everything as a bundle. As this is an older game and it goes on a decent discount, I'd recommend waiting until then to pick it up. Achievements: Something to note is that achievements in this game can take a moment to actually pop. For me, it was anywhere between a few seconds and around a minute after they should have unlocked, but other than that, they all unlocked when they were meant to. DLC is required for 100%, and there are a number of missable achievements alongside collectable, miscellaneous and story-related achievements. A minimum of two playthroughs will be required. As this is a souls-like game, the difficulty of the achievements will depend somewhat on your skill level. Personally, though, I found them all fairly easy to complete. The only guides I would definitely recommend using are for the collectables, just so you don't miss any. There are some great video guides on YouTube by 360GameTV for both the base gameand A Walk in the ParkDLC. None of the base game collectables are missable, as you are able to travel back to previous sections before the final fight. There are also some other handy Steam guides by Lozwansfor the base game and John Vaunfor The Good, the Bad and the Augmented DLC if you would like a little more help. I think the only achievements you really need to worry about missing are in the A Walk in the Park DLC, so make sure to check those before starting it. Overall, the achievements aren't that difficult once you get used to the game. You can get the majority of them in a single run, and while you could technically do everything in one playthrough by using some handy save file manipulation at certain points, you can also just do another run in NG+, which doesn't take that long. Personally, I completed everything except for three achievements, including the glasses, the other ending and the achievement for unlocking all achievements, during my first run. I then just tidied up the rest in NG+. For more in-depth yet straight-to-the-point reviews, feel free to check out my curator page here.

Very underrated, I find this way more interesting than Elden Ring. Incredible labyrinthian level design, unique limb-targeting combat, surprisingly deep RPG systems, and some of the best industrial horror vibes I've seen. The game has tons of weird ideas that actually feel like someone had a vision instead of just copying Dark Souls. The combat can be janky as hell and the difficulty occasionally turns into straight-up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but once you understand the systems, it clicks beautifully. 8/10 — industrial horror nightmare where a middle-aged man gets turned into a walking forklift accident

Such an underrated game, incredible story. Good enough if you want to kill some time.

DLC 1. Walk in the park

I love this game and consider it my favourite non-FROMSOFT soulslike, owning it on 3 platforms now. Its not without its issues though, it has clunky gameplay definitely akin to a less polished Dark Souls 1, a high lethality (especially early game before you get a build going), and can be pretty labyrinthian at times with rough boss design, with a narrative built up around way too many generic Sci-Fi tropes and an anti-corporate rhetoric which I think it pulls off really damn well, but its far from a unique premise (but definitely uniquely presented and interwoven). The Setting & Plot Hook The Surge is set in a low sci-fi, relatively modern setting and leans on industrialism and horror. You play as Warren, a paraplegic man who joins the publicly traded mega-corporation called CREO in order to have an exosuit screwed into his skeleton and brainstem to give him mobility back, so he can join the workforce of Project ReSolve; a Hail Mary attempt by CREO to prevent total ecological collapse on Earth due to unchecked global warming, by launching satellites into orbit to perform some science and fix everything. Mid exosuit instalment things go awry and Warren finds himself stranded in a satellite production factory complex with a bunch of massive, haywire machinery, a workforce that has seemingly had their brains fried and are being dragged around by their bloodthirsty exosuits, and a secretive security force that has locked down the executive ward. Warren must navigate everything from expansive production floors and research centres to claustraphobic pitch-black engineering tunnels and waste plants, coming across various undeclared activities underway within the more hidden areas of the complex on his journey to the Executive Ward to find out what is going on and save a fellow survivor. The Surge is a fantastic sci-fi horror soulslike. The Gameplay The Surge's unique mechanic is that the lock on can target an enemy generally, or you can specifically target the body, head or limbs. By targeting specific areas you increase your chances of gaining additional items when performing a finisher on the enemy, so long as the targeted segment was armoured or holding a weapon. This allows Warren to feed broken exosuit armour parts or power tools into fabricators to learn how to build them for his own rig, and everything from your armour to consumables and passive traits you find are tied to the power source of your exosuit, with the power acting as your level. This makes early game particularly congested as your healing injectable, stamina+/energy+/enemy_healthbar_display/item_proximity_alarm (etc) passives (mods iirc), weapons and armour are all vying for the tiny amount of core power you have, and that contributed to the very rough early game. Also, this power core value is used to short circuit various power grids throughout the industrial complex to open doors or crates etc, which is cool and offers some optional backtracking. Combat is clunky but really solid once you acclimatise. the dodge is a hydraulic leap so is more linear than your might expect, and has tight i-frames so takes some getting used to, whilst blocking drains a lot of stamina initially. Enemy attacks can feel super frustrating because most enemies hit like a truck and some have overtuned tracking (its all or nothing, dodge too early they will pivot as they swing, dodge too late you'll get clipped). he beforementioned location targeting plays a huge part too, since instead of stagger being reliant on overall armour of enemies, its based on the location you hit's armour, as is damage. Specific, Unarmoured > Generic full body > Specific, Armoured From left to right youve got most stagger and damage to least, but the armoured segments are how you gain new blueprints and armour/weapon parts. Not targetting specific locations allows you to avoid the armoured defences provided by specific parts, which is good against fully armoured enemies. The parts you collect are tier-gated and you cannot upscale lowtier items to higher tiers, which means new areas can feel like statchecks from higher difficulty enemies in higher gear quality, until you cut a few bodies up. Also, remember that you're a steel-enveloped dude throwing around industrial tools, its meant to feel cumbersome and weighty, kind of like how Gears of War feels, actually. It can feel a little weird until that clicks. Also, there is a duck and jump mechanic that is never explained. You can duck a high attack into a jumping knee attack, or jump a low attack into an overhead swing, to cause great damage and stagger. Its like the game's version of a parry. Very niche use case though honestly, its more style than substance. As for environments; Instead of a massive interconnected world, you have a series of 'hubs' which tend to circle back on one or two MedBays, with a lot of shortcuts through them. This can feel tedious at times if you get bored of the "Its a massive factory" aesthetic of the early areas, and can make boss runbacks painful if you struggle to memorise which shortcut leads to another shortcut that reaches the fog wall. Also, the bosses are not great in this game. They can feel incredibly BS until you know how to deal with them, and once you know they're a cakewalk. You get an upgraded boss weapon for doing specific things to beat them but annoyingly you need to look up how to do them if you want to guarantee it. This game excels at atmosphere, tension and story (so long as you go looking for it, its not as esoteric as Dark Souls, but audiologs and environmental details do the heavy lifting. The worst thing I remember is that there is a prominent NPC that you will swear the game forgot about unless you climb down a little engineering tunnel into a side room, and pay attention to writing on some of the objects in that room). And its good enough to recommend it on that alone imho. Summary I love this game. It is pretty flawed so I can respect its not for everyone, but its also a pretty adventurously designed game and if you know what you're getting in to and give it benefit of the doubt, its likely to surprise you. None of the DLC is that important honestly and has wacky characters that degrade the seriousness of the main game, but they're self contained and offer some great weapons and mods. If you get the DLC and hate the shift in tone and writing, avoid The Surge 2 because the DLC is a half-as-bad foreshadowing of the tone shift the sequel brings. The dog-ass sequel really shows how polish and risk-aversion ruins more than some ambitious rough edges ever could, and unfortunately means we will likely never see a true sequel to this gritty sci-fi horror gem.

An exhausting labyrinthian game that does not respect your time. Level designs are incredibly recursive and annoying, combat is repetitive and clunky. Most of your gear and upgrades are worthless. The story is interesting, but also a disjointed mess that takes too much effort to piece together. And your reward is only vague answers leading up to a disappointing boss fight. It's not worth the slog that this game becomes.

I tried very hard to get into this game. I loved the surge 2 and i love unique takes on the soulslike genre, mainly ones that take place in anything other than medieval times. This game just sucks the life out of you with little to no reward. Enemies are tedious to fight, the neat lock-on and dismember system is clunky, attacks across the board are slow and cumbersome, damage taken is extreme, the zones are extremely difficult to navigate, and finally, its just not fun. I played some hard to like soulslikes. Lords of the fallen (both of them). Last hero of nostalgaia, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dolmen. The surge is just plain bad. Go play Surge 2 and ignore this game, its ALOT better.

⭐ Genel Puan: 1/10 🤖 "Welcome to CREO." ⚙️
