Recent reviews have focused on Abiotic Factor's theme (Half-Life aesthetic with SCP entities) and not its gameplay or progression. Since I haven't played Half-Life or read a single thing about SCPs, I think my perspective might help people who are on the fence about a game that, based on such reviews, might sound like more style than substance. Abiotic Factor does indeed land its style very well, so it's understandable that many reviews focus on that. The art style is very reminiscent of late-90s/early-aughts titles, and is executed very well and with consistent overarching direction throughout the entire game. The player travels to a wide variety of different environments, most of which have radically different aesthetics, but there's only a single instance in the entire game I can think of (a sudden and sharp lighting change within the same zone) where I thought that the sudden shifts felt jarring. From industrial zones to alien worlds, the game does an absolutely stellar job of creating a unified sense of both grounded realism where it's warranted and fantastical disbelief when you find yourself travelling into unknown climes. Everything - even the unreal - feels believable in the manner in which it's executed and presented to the player, and that's a triumph both of the art direction and the narrative design, which provides you with a scientific and even at times boringly mundane (in a good way!) background to the fantastical things you see around you that makes elements that would otherwise seem out-of-place fit together constructively. But even the best visuals are still ultimately subordinate to the gameplay. If the game isn't fun, beautiful or not I'm not going to come back to it again and again. So how does the gameplay measure up? As with all things it's not perfect, but "amazingly" fits here. Abiotic has one of the smoothest, best-balanced and legitimately engaging progression systems I've had the pleasure of experiencing, and in my opinion is the real cornerstone of its success. From your first stapler to a high-tech neutrino emitter, Abiotic finds ways of enticing the player to pick up anything and everything to discover new combinations and possibilities for the materials, both mundane and supernatural, lying all around you. This might make those who shudder at the thought of full inventories or tedious, repetitive looting of everything you see nervous, but the game also does an incredible job of progressively providing the player with tools and systems to accelerate their exploration and even the process of picking items themselves up. This turns what could otherwise easily have been a major frustration into a limitation that the player has tools they can use to gradually overcome, which encourages even further engagement with that cornerstone crafting system. What in many other games feels like frustrating, grinding busywork feels legitimately enjoyable in Abiotic, which is well-designed to never give the player too much power too quickly, but is also generous with materials once they do unlock, preventing players from needing to grind for any but a very small subset of rare, high-value mats - and even these have ways to be automated or accelerated. The moment-to-moment gameplay (movement, combat, gunplay, etc.) is good but not revolutionary. For survival-crafter games it's above the median, but doesn't reach the same soaring heights as the game's general progression and crafting systems. This isn't a knock against these systems, because I found them highly enjoyable: jumping around at the moon's gravity with special trinkets; using armor abilities to modify your movement speed or give special combat buffs; setting up combat tactics between ranged and melee players - these were all very fun for our group as we proceeded through. But we were definitely way more excited when we read a particularly juicy log entry or picked up a new item we'd never seen before than when we finished off a hard opponent, and our focus was more often on what we needed to do to craft the tools we needed to increase our combat power than on structuring the combats themselves, which I think defines the moment-to-moment gameplay of Abiotic well: fun, engaging, but not the focus. Even here, crafting takes priority: it is your primary mechanism defining the way you play the game (quite literally in the cases of some of the more impactful weapons, armors and trinkets) and how difficult or easy a particular combat encounter is. You think about combat and the dangers of zones a lot, but you are typically thinking of them in the context of "what materials do I need so I can craft these items so we can survive here?" The one exception to this I'll note is level design, which is straight S-tier. The map of Abiotic Factor winds back in on itself in a way more reminiscent of the original Dark Souls than anything else, except its shortcuts and surprise connections are orders of magnitude more frequent. There are dozens and dozens of shortcuts in this game, and a good half of them will have you pogging when you realize where they go and how much time opening one has just saved you. This thrill was a major part of what made what might otherwise feel like mundane explorations feel not just impactful but also desirable. Before closing, I would be remiss not to talk about the story of Abiotic. It works hand-in-hand with the aesthetic of the game, as intimated above, legitimizing the fantastical and making the entire setting believable and immersive. The amount of thought that went into the structure of this world, from the entities themselves to the classification systems and containment protocols involved with them, is remarkable - from what I know of it, fans of SCP definitely have a place here. But, with that said, I think the best part of this game's story by far are the mostly novel elements. The Gate Cascade facility itself - what it works on, the people who work there, the history of its developments and innovations, and the causes and coverups surrounding the crisis that begins there mere moments after you start your first day at work - these are the elements which interested me the most. Finding new people to talk to, learning about the facility and reading emails and watching holo-recordings that detail the events that happened there were the absolute highlight of discovery for my group of friends, and sat right beside the crafting system and the thrill of discovering the facility's physical layout as one of this game's strongest components. I will note that the game, in my opinion, doesn't really stick the landing. Even if the player discovers logs and data which would encourage them to behave otherwise, the end of the story is on rails and the player cannot choose an alternate outcome. This is a major disappointment, both because letting the player discover information that should lead them to behave differently and then not presenting them the option to do so is one of my most hated tropes in videogames and because I think there are ways the developer could have achieved the same desired outcome while giving the player the agency to make their own decisions. This is a rare point of failure for Abiotic, and stings worse for coming at the game's climax. But even though this is a relatively major flaw for a game that I value the story and narrative of so highly, the rest of the game is simply so stellar it can't meaningfully drag down my impression of it. This is easily one of my favorite games of all time, and I can't wait for the DLC.

just finished the game and this is absolutely one of my favourite multiplayer games of all time. If there was a game that I could play again for the first time, this would be it without a doubt. incredible story, insanely fun gameplay, and a sense of exploration that I haven't felt in a game felt since I was a kid. This game belongs in the multiplayer hall of fame. its a masterpiece.

We needed a nice game for Friday night that everybody would love. Instead, we found this gem and got sucked into a portal-hopping, lab-destroying nightmare and I couldn't be happier. Constant panic-crafting, terrible decisions, and unexpected jumpscares. One minute you’re exploring a chill alien planet, and the next you're stuck in a literal horror movie, crouching behind barrels and begging a giant monster not to eat your face. It feels like Half-Life 1 had an illegitimate love child with a survival-crafting game and gave it a top-tier comedy engine. The retro aesthetic hits just right, and crossplay worked flawlessly for our mixed setup. We played as group of 4 people (3 survivors on xbox ss + 1 pc host), so no connection issues, no lags, best engine ever. We originally planned to play for 3-4 hours and go home to our wives and kids, but ended up playing for 8 hours straight until morning. Huge thanks to the devs for actual crossplay support. Best Friday night game we've found in years !

Really fun survival game with an AMAZING atmosphere. The SCP/Half-Life style setting makes it stand out, and there’s always something interesting to discover. The progression also feels so rewarding and there's always something new going on. Definitely recommend if you like survival games with a bit more story and direction.
