Voidtrain is a very odd mix of things, and while I would tentatively recommend it, you should know what you're getting into before you buy. The overall gameplay loop is simple enough - operate a train that rides ethereal rails through a strange void-between-worlds, and gather materials along the way to upgrade and expand your train as you go. This sounded pretty interesting to me, which is why I decided to give the game a try. Now, there is a lot to like. The graphics are beautiful, the performance is great, the animations are fluid and well-made, and the combat (which there is quite a lot of) is very satisfying, allowing you to wield multiple guns with swappable parts and differing firing-styles. All good stuff. The problem is that it feels like the game is at odds with itself constantly due to the litany of strange design choices on display. The narrative - and the way the game delivers the narrative to you - is the first immediately obvious strange choice. You are accompanied through the story by a 'Stanley Parable'-esque narrator, with the same quirky narrative style, but it just... doesn't really fit with the setting of the game. Not to mention the goofy squid-like aliens that not only act as marketable mascot characters, but also your only way to automate production on your train, meaning you can't really avoid interacting with them. And for some reason, it all has something to do with Norse mythology? It's just odd. I would like to say these are the only things that feel out of place, but the same goes for basically everything in this game. What I expected to be a lonely adventure through a mysterious void, dripping with mystery and atmosphere, is instead a quirky quest full of wacky creatures that you're only going on because the narrator decided that's what was happening. One minute you'll be ramming through an enemy blockade with your train, firing at strange soldiers who want you dead for reasons unknown. The next, you'll be watching those little alien guys play pat-a-cake with each other while the oh-so-quirky narrator rattles off another quippy comment that makes you roll your eyes and cringe inside. So yeah. There's a lot to like, and I did have fun with the game overall, but maybe pass on this one if you want a story that actually serves a purpose and takes itself seriously, because you won't find that here.

Honestly a disappointing experience, the game have so much potential but everything feels unfinished, the story is not that interesting and there's no choice making or anything, just you being a tool for the story to advance, without any satisfaction for finishing it, the gameplay is great at first but feels very repetitive pretty quickly and it feels like it could be so much more, more evolution, more automation, more customization, but in the end you pretty much need to do as the game intended and nothing more. I wanted to love this game but it has been a disappointment, sadly.

The survival/tech progression feels good as you get to the point where you have access to everything. Once you've unlocked everything, you no longer need any resources so half the game feels pointless. Problem is, if you aren't rushing through the game and leaving resources behind and are actually gathering everything as you go, you will hit that point 2/3rds of the way through the story. Then you are just slapping the afterburner and rushing to the next depot on repeat. Right about that time you are introduced to a new content that lets you exchange resources as something you can find while in the void rather than at the depot, you stopped needing resources and the shiny new thing is worthless. Primary weapon customization is good. Could be better with more options but it's functional. Secondary weapon customization is a joke. No special upgrade powers, just mag size, fire rate, reload speed, range, accuracy, and damage. The mods are also balanced against each other so the performance remains consistent from beginning to end of the game. One single rarity the whole way through for these as well. The extra content is bland. Once you can finish the arena event, you can always finish it. It doesn't scale or change ever. The puzzles are nice but there's only like 3 kinds of puzzle and the rewards are lackluster when you no longer need resources and have finished customizing your weapons. Basically, you beat the crafting/survival part of the game halfway through the story, you rush through the rest of the story to get to the end because that's all that's left and the story itself concludes rapidly in an unsatisfying way. Cool final boss fight with boss-fight mechanics which was also out of left-field because it was the first and only time it presents a boss fight like that. Your customized weapons don't mean much in that fight though as you don't even use them. The game is beautiful and atmospheric. I enjoyed the game until I didn't and it left a sour taste. You might get 60 hours out of it but there is no depth to the game and the story trips over its own shoe laces. It felt like the devs ran out of budget and just shoved it out the door as it was.

I don't think I have anything unique to add here that other people have not already mentioned, so I'll keep it brief: The train building is fun and promising, but there is absolutely no depth to this game. You build your train, shoot some stuff, ride along in a single straight line, and then the game ends. It's fun for multiplayer, but that further trivializes the already shallow and simplistic mechanics. It's odd since the visuals are kind of amazing and the game loves to hint at this massive, fathomless world that you never get to explore properly. Oh, and none of the side mechanics do anything satisfying. Actively ignoring side mechanics seemed to improve my enjoyment of the game, which is probably a bad sign. Game has fairly pretty graphics and an interesting premise, not very well executed. I'll give it a solid 5/10.

Was really enjoying the game but i got a game-breaking bug during a quest which soft-locked me. The only solution is to reload a save from 6 hours ago so i will not be finishng this game. This kind of stuff should never happen outside of a pre-release game.

This doesn't deserve a "mixed" and idk why people are so harsh on this game. This game is raft on a train and its very cozy in co-op. It could be better, yes, but so could almost every game. I love all the decoration options and the satisfying feeling of making your train really big and customizing it the way you want

beat it and fresh thoughts. game has decent backbone but it shallow in almost every aspect. the gun system is so small it doesnt matter what you have they will die the research system is small, 50 pages of 1 or 2 main things, 2 random things, and 4 cosmetics per page. seems like alot but honestly once you figure how to generate research fast you can crank it out real fast. and not counting cosmetics/decor its pretty much 4 trains, 9-10 production things, and a dlc tourist station. the main failure of this game is the shallow pool of things to do. the arena is pointless to do, and the rewards from them and puzzles are litterally not worth the effort, you get better things just killing soldiers at depots. the game quickly boils down to quickly cruising from depot to depot. lastly the narration is very odd, dude perfectly captures the same cadence and pattens of ai genned voice but its actually a real dood, it feels like from how he read the lines like hes completely disconnected. almost reminds me of old godzilla movies in a way. tl:dr game is shallow in many spots and it hurts it badly. worse game then raft but far better story then raft. started it in coop but friend got tired of the shallow loops halfway in and i finished it alone. shallow enemies, shallow craft system, shallow gear system. i did like the ending.
