It wasn't as bad as I remembered, Burnt Ivory King is a good boss. Frigid Outskirts is still abysmal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and the rest of the level is mid-to-bad. 6/10

I didn't like it, lots of jank in the mechanics, i'd have to go as far as to say it's the worst DLC in souls history. sadly, even the designs leave something to be desired. the bosses are still incredible, which is why i still give it a thumbs up.

I finished this DLC over a month ago but didn't have the time to review it, until now! As the last expansion of Dark Souls II, I think it is very good (for the most part). I think that the Frozen Eleum Loyce is a gorgeous area and uses the lighting of the game very well (unlike most levels). The DLC starts with us entering the gates and seeing the view... until a second later the snowstorm appears. I think it would have been better if the snowstorm happened a bit later into the DLC (like when we get the eye of the priestess) so we actually get to see the level a bit, because we already saw what the rest of the DLC is like at that point so it doesn't feel as special going back to it. But I'm still happy with what we got. On the left is Aava an invisible tiger who you can only fight after getting the eye of the priestess somewhere further in the DLC. Anyways, most of the area is fun to explore (except the area with the icy hedgehogs) and really pretty! It is also very bright, even in the snowstorm! It feels different when most of the game takes place in darkness (it is called DARK souls for a reason). After traversing through the area and eventually getting the eye of the priestess you can then return to fight Aava the King's pet. She is the first boss in the DLC and is a pretty good boss whilst not being super memorable. Her design is pretty and very different unlike the other bosses in the game. After you defeat Aava you enter the grand cathedral, you meet Alsanna. She is one of the fragments of Manus that you fight throughout the game (and it's DLC's) but this time she is actually nice (somehow). After talking to her she will stop the snowstorm and break the ice letting you fight The Burnt Ivory King. While a phenomenal boss, fighting him felt a bit underwhelming considering all the praise he got from fans and whatnot. To me, he felt to easy: I beat him in 4 tries. And it's okay for a boss to be easy, but looking at other bosses like: Fume knight, Sir Alonne, Elana and any other DLC boss and then comparing it...he seems just way too easy. And I'm not saying that he is a bad boss, I just thought that he would be more of a challenge. Another thing is the charred Loyce knights. They do a lot of damage but your own Loyce knights do barely any damage to them. And there are so many of them that you have to fight! I get that the Ivory King had a whole army, but it is so annoying having to fight so many of them. It would have been better if your own knights did the same amount of damage but had lower health instead of having it the other way round. An even worse thing about the charred Loyce knights is the special item that they drop: the Loyce souls. I got nine of them after three hours or so but wasn't sure on what to do with them, until I looked it up. Apparently you have to get FIFTY of them to be able to get up close to Alsanna and for her to give you her soul so that you can get the Eleum Loyce sword, a bit more dialogue and the Eleum Loyce knight armour. The problem is that the charred Loyce knights rarely ever drop any of their souls even with all the drop increasing items. While the rewards are cool, it is not worth spending so much time for those rewards. But other than that, I do enjoy the boss and the Old Chaos arena. His design is cool and it is one of the most cinematic boss fights that I've seen in any game! However, I talked about all of this without the mention of the Frigid Outskirts. This is a secret area that you can find after getting a key hidden in a cave. While I do like the bosses in Dark Souls, the area to me is even more important: It has an atmosphere and a theme with each area and a corresponding boss to match the area (usually). Also it is where you will spend most of the game in, so each level has to be fun and distinct from each other. The Frigid Outskirts is long, horrible, boring and has one of the worst bosses of all time. The area is in a blizzard which is extremely annoying as you cannot see anything and you tend to get lost a lot of the time. Not only that, but there are also icy unicorns that shoot lightning from you AND come out of nowhere AND do a crazy amount of damage. Thankfully, I had Santier's spear and stun-locked them to death. I know that this area is designed for multiplayer but even then it is not fun going through that nightmare of a level. I just don't think it is fun to go through here at all. Do you? I think NOT!!!!!!!! It would have been better if the snowstorm went away when you reach the Grand Cathedral, it would have made this level a lot more tolerable than having ten seconds before the storm comes back. There should have been at least one bonfire to save some time on the runback to the last bosses of the DLC: Lud and Zallen (The King's Pet's). Right after going to the worst level in the franchise you have to go and fight these guys. Yes, they are optional but I wanted to fight all the bosses in the game so of course I would try to beat them! I spent a whole week trying to beat them as the Frigid Outskirts is that difficult to get through. You first fight Lud, which is pretty easy. But then after getting Lud to half of his health Zallen joins in. Zallen regenerates his health, has more health and they both have the same design as Aava. The only positive that I will say is that you can actually see that Zallen is scars and bleeding, which is a cool detail and at least they changed something. But that's it with the DLC. Overall I enjoyed it, it's better than the Old Iron King but I still prefer the Sunken King DLC the most. While I would recommend this DLC however, I would suggest skipping the Frigid Outskirts. I know I'm not the best reviewer and I don't think anyone reads them (except myself). I repeat the same things, I make mistakes and I forget stuff that I originally wanted to put in... But that's okay! I hope that whoever reads this enjoys my review and thinks that they have learned something from it. Anyways... I WOULD RECOMMEND!
