The setting is incredible, the shells are insanely cool, the gunplay is peak, but it is an extraction shooter. The gaming community is witnessing a strange trend. Extraction shooters are being released at a rate not seen before and some people are beginning to realize something. People ruin games. The evidence of this is being demonstrated not only in marathon but also in Arc. Arc has been infected with cheaters the same as Tarkov. The only reason Marathon isn't infested is because it doesn't have enough players for anyone to care. This game should have never been an extraction shooter. At least not one that includes pvp. There isn't a cheating problem in this game, there is a skill discrepancy in this game. I have played casually since the server slam, mostly solos because none of my friends wanted to play Marathon. At first it was awesome, the vibes were desolate and dystopian, I was invested in filling my stash to ascend to higher levels of gear. Now? The most I do is queue in as a free kit twice a week. Why? The top 1% of skilled players are being dropped into lobbies with casuals running free kits. Purple and gold geared players with 4 and 5 ticks of shield health that your inferior free gun has to chew through to even attempt to kill them. It's beyond unfair. The saddest aspect of this is integrating SBMM would hurt the game even more because queue times would get even longer. Thus the downward spiral this game is on. Over the past couple months they have attempted to attract casual PvE players with a sad attempt at a roguelite mode called Vault Breakers. Solve the puzzles, open the vaults, and retrieve a weird immersion breaking currency to upgrade the kit you would bring in. You did not get to keep the gear you found. WHICH IS INSANE. What difference would it have made? The sweats already have a stash filled with purples and golds. Would it have been that terrible if we would have been able to keep the gear and actually stand a chance against the 1%? We still invested hours into learning Cryo Archive, a beautiful labyrinth, to be able to find anything in the mode. The cherry on top? It was "experimental" and they removed it. Now the game is back to catering to the top skilled players who are playing a mini battle royale while the rest of us are playing shell death simulator. You might as well have an audio track of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka screaming, "IT'S ALL THERE, BLACK AND WHITE, CLEAR AS CRYSTAL! YOU GET NOTHING! YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY SIR!" This game is the slow, sad death of Bungie. I expect a End Of Service statement in the following months. Do not waste your time or your money. EDIT: Anyone new to Marathon who reads the comments, ignore the people who condescendingly claim that negative reviewers don't enjoy extraction shooters. I have hundreds of hours in Escape from Tarkov before it came over to steam. I like Extraction Shooters but Marathon is a half-baked one at best, a overly punishing one at worst. For me, it actually felt more punishing to play than Tarkov at times. EDIT 2: Casual players like me are dropping this game because it's in a negative feedback loop. Here is how it works: Low skilled players get put into lobbies with high skilled, they quit because they had little to no chance of winning. Mid skilled players queue into high skilled lobbies, they persevere longer than others but still end up quitting. The bottom totem pole of players continues to get kicked out like this until all that is left are the highly skilled. That number continues to dwindle because there will be players who realize they can't dunk on everyone else anymore and the only lobbies that are left are pure sweatfests. EDIT 3: Some of these players will claim that Gold gear doesn't matter. On paper, sure. Except the map where you can acquire that gear has the highest skill requirement out of anything in the game. Not only do you have to solve vault puzzles, you also have to potentially contend with the best of the best while doing so. A player who knows this, and encounters someone with gold shields, can accurately predict they are up against someone that is somewhere at the top of the totem pole. EDIT 4: I realized why this is more punishing than Tarkov. Tarkov has silent extraction areas and the only alarms on the map are; 1. Scavs who fire at you. 2. PMC's who spot you, and fire at you. 3. Bosses who spot and fire at you. 4. You, when you take shots at the previous targets. Sure, looting makes noise, so does walking, those you can control. In Marathon, there are alarms around EVERY corner; 1. USEC who spot you. 2. Turrets that spot you. 3. Birds. 4. Ticks. 5. Several caches have literal alarms attached to them. 5. Doors that you need keys for (what's the point of the key if it still sets off an alarm?). 6. The shots you take. 7. Sprinting is hilariously loud. 8. Finally, activating the extraction beam. This game is designed to punish stealth and reward being better than everyone else.

The Game That Killed Bungie. So I thought I would try this and see what it was like before it ended up being killed off due to low player counts. The TLDR is that even if you ignore all of the drama surrounding this game, there are serious matchmaking issues due to low player counts. I spent more time waiting in queue than I did playing, and found what little I did play to be underwhelming at best. They replaced what looked like a good PVE mode with an ordinance heist event, which makes very little sense. Imagine going through multiple specific runs and actions only to get some grenade launcher that you cannot even reload or add to your vault. What was Bungie thinking? Overall, the Bungie of the past no longer exists, so you can skip this. Another addition to the Concordian saga. For the good, the gunplay seems alright, and I liked playing against some of the PVE enemies, though most of the time, the game seems like they just repeat the same enemies over and over. It isn’t like Helldivers 2, where the enemies each fill a niche, and you have to work together to eliminate them. I can tell the PvE is an afterthought. It is playable for the most part, matchmaking issues aside. For the not-so-good, I do not like the art style and would have preferred something more realistic. I had one crash to desktop while waiting for a match. Speaking of which, I spent more time waiting for players to fill a lobby than I did playing. The game currently has roughly 3,000 players on Steam, so it makes me wonder: 18 days out from season 3, will this game even survive as is? It must be taking a ton of money to run servers nobody is using, on top of the 300 million+ Bungie spent making and marketing it. What a shame Destiny 3 had to die for this. The inventory system feels just tacked on, with a lot of the items not being something you can use in a meaningful way. As this was designed as a PvP shooter first and foremost, it is most efficient to wipe entire lobbies and extract. For new players, this can mean playing against highly experienced players and ruin entire runs. I can see why the player base has not expanded much, as being killed before extract or having all your loot constantly taken is not much fun. I wish Bungie had designed onboarding better for new players. There is not much of a story to speak of, and the world-building is background noise at best and is underdeveloped. It is very obvious that Marathon was intended to be PvP, and everything else is secondary. I wonder how Bungie came to the decision that releasing a game that isn’t free-to-play and is only PvP is a good idea. That and making a PvP-only extraction shooter. Both are bizarre decisions given the current gaming landscape. The DLC is just skins and credits. Totally missable. Here are some videos if you want to see how bad the state of the game is. The former Bungie C-level execs have cashed out, and most of the workers have been laid off. They are even leasing their former offices. Marathon will go down in history as the game that killed a beloved studio. What a shame. It makes me wonder if Bungie as it exists today even has a future at this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1YIQL2DyQA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0vJX4x6BCQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DUYpuqN60k One can't forget how the collector's edition did not even come with a game code: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/pcEAC11s2MQ Or how Bungie stole other people’s art for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh8GyCiuzCs This is especially terrible as the art director followed the artist on several platforms. He had to have known what was going on. Overall, I only picked this up to see what all the fuss is about. Buy Helldivers 2 instead if you want a decent game that is somewhat similar but without the needless inventory stuff and PvP tacked on. I give this game, for what little I was able to play, a 4/10 due to the poor matchmaking, poor onboarding for new players, meaningless inventory items, crashes and lack of meaningful PvE. Even if it was free, it would be too much in my opinion. I do not know what they were thinking pricing it at 49.99 CAD. RIP Bungie.

+ gunplay is top notch and tight as hell movement is my cup of tea and it's so f'ing satisfying awesome maps. Cryo Archive is the best map designed specifically for an extraction shooter, in game map for it could be better though great visuals, aesthetic and art supreme music and audio design. Rhythm of Writhing Constellations is my beloved and Ryan Lott is the actual GOAT - balance and TTK are not fun for an extraction shooter IMO every update launches broken server issues quests are simple and boring readability of implants and cores is bad even after the update meh At first, I hated UI/UX but the more you play, the better it gets + they improved it a bit in season 2 During season 1, cosmetics were meh, but the stuff they were pumping out now is fire more pleaseI want more maps like Cryo, enemy types and factions, Compiler boss fight is cool I would love it to have a story campaign, even if it's on the same level of bad as Destiny TL;DR This game is soo good and has lots of potential, but due to weird balance choices, updates that introduce lots of bugs, art thief scandal, bad first impression of the game during reveal, killing off Destiny 2, and other bizarre choices from both Bungie and Sony this will probably become one of the generational fumbles. And I'm sad because of it Go watch Marathon Reveal Cinematic Short. Alberto Mielgo makes absolute cinema P.S. Bungie and Sony are fully responsible for the decline and current state of the game, but I can't stand the grifters who contributed to Marathon's death by hating on it without even playing it

The game was fantastic, and was Bungie’s ball to drop. The ball has been dropped. Maybe we will find it picked up again in December, but at this point we are hoping for a no man’s sky level of a comeback. Good luck to the devs and thanks for some great times

A great game that only appeal for player who have high tolerance for failure/who enjoy highly competitive PvP. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it to average/casual players who does not enjoy the loop of constant PvP fight non stop against more competent player as lot of the action can make noise which attract other players which might lost all your loot in the process, which makes your time invested in a raid feel frustrating. This does not played like an extraction shooter game shown by the marketing but feels more like small sized high stakes Battle Royale game with extra steps especially with the latter two maps that have better loot. Edit 15/09/2026: Looks like they making a big pivot to more PvE focused experience on December 2026 in an attempt to appeal for average gamer. Will revise the review once it come out and played it a bit to form my opinion whether its worth recommending afterward.

Just shy of 200 hrs played. I usually play about a week until i'm beaten, bloodied, and bruised by the sweats just walking on casuals. Then I take a break, and come back in a couple weeks hoping they have left the game. Honestly skill based matchmaking would do a lot for this game, or even give us a little more time before death. TTK is insane especially when you're in the starter zone with white shields against a 4k hr no life full gold. Most of my friends have refunded or just gave up because of the no lifes. Casuals are the ones spending money on your game, you gotta give them something to work with. This game has hands down the best game design/artwork of literally any game. Just go pve or get the sweats into their own lobbies so we can at least play a bit. I am rooting for you guys. Other than the mostly negative review, I recommend this game to anyone with the hope that one day we will be able to play. Right now expect to die 9/10 raids to someone who hasnt taken his hand off the mouse for 6-8 months. But if you like pain like me.... its one of the most spectacular game designs you will ever see.
