I really wanted to like this game and did some aspects, but the mid-late game progression and dichotomy of really easy gameplay and very grindy resource costs loses me. It barely falls short for me. Good: - world, atmosphere, early game gameplay and progression, art direction, voice acting, concept. Meh: - characters, story, writing. Bad: - mid-late game progression, easy difficulty, game balance in terms of resources. I think this game builds a really interesting world and atmosphere, the idea of connecting to and repairing/upgrading your car as you progress is really cool, and the quirk system ties in well to that. The story is pretty cookie cutter for me, 'we gotta charge up the beep-boops to stabilize the glibbidy-glorp, oh no X character you've never met, don't unnecessarily sacrifice your life!!! we gotta keep going despite X's death' etc etc. My biggest complaints by far are gameplay progression and balance and tedium associated. Why, do I need, 10000 marsh eggs for everything. Why do I need eggs for a blowtorch. Tf. I will have 1 billion plastic and steel sheets, but never enough chemicals, or plasma, or eggs, etc. And it becomes grindy and formulaic, okay now I need to just hit this lab for the 100th time to get 2 chemicals yayyy!! Oh what's that, you didn't know you needed a higher tier hammer for the last resource? Oh well guess you'll have to do another 5+ junction run! Teehee! And in terms of anchor energy, I am permanently scarce of stable anchor energy when I have an excess of corrupted with no way to exchange them. The scarcity makes sense in the early game, but if I have to pick and choose between experimenting with a car mod or being able to store my loot there's not question on what I'm doing. There's no reason for me to engage with and experiment with the arguably most interesting car mods, because everything is so damn expensive and there's no way to get enough of an 'early' game energy even though I am 'late' game. And those fun parts will probably just drain my entire battery and leave me stranded (except for nitrous that ♥♥♥♥ is busted) which leads me to car part balance- Most of the car upgrades are unnecessary (why would I waste a whole seat slot on auto-parking) or just bad (rip AMP engine), I easily beat the game with mostly armored parts, it felt unsatisfying to go back and craft olympium parts after I had already beaten the game and there was no more to do. A lot of the fancy upgrades just drain your battery like crazy, why would I use the fuel synthesizer when I could just add a ♥♥♥♥ ton more fuel storage and scavenge some gas. The battery regeneration parts don't do enough to justify the crazier parts, I really wanted the electric car build to work but it felt awful. I feel by the end I should feel like I've 'conquered' the zone, and should feel powerful and self-sufficient, but it didn't feel that way for me. At odds with this feeling in terms of progression and resource management, was the actual gameplay- The game is too easy, its just a casual and relaxing drive, even in the deep zone. The only times I died or was in any danger was because I forgot to pack something essential or had a series of very unfortunate events. There needs to be a couple anomalies that pose a more active threat imo, even in unstable areas it just boils down to beeline between anchors, stopping to grab every key resource I need on the way, drive around every anomaly. It felt very casual, I wished they would lean more into this horror and unknown aspect because the atmosphere they built was very good. If you want a casual experience I think this game may be more for you. I think the creepiness/horror and mystery of the world and the atmosphere they built for it were more compelling and wished they had went more in that direction. Cryptids are supposed to be scary no? If you're like me, I'd recommend Dredge for something similar but much better executed imo.

A unique combination of roguelike survival and driving, with a horror themed experience. This is not a game that is easy to sum up, despite being a simple concept. By all metrics, I should not like this game. I do not like driving games in general. I do not typically enjoy the gameplay cycle of driving to a place before doing something. I also do not like horror games in general. Jumpscares tend to make me angry and horror ambience makes me curious, not scared. So when I saw this game I thought it was not for me. But then I saw a bit of the gameplay and decided to give it the two-hour trial. Good thing I did. What actually is Pacific Drive? It looks like a driving game, but it's actually a survival game. For a game with "drive" in the title you will spend a surprisingly short amount of time behind the wheel. You will use the car to scavenge for loot such as tinned food and scrap metal you will use to survive and thrive, staying alert for the various hazards that can appear without warning. The "long drive" sequences are purely implied by loading screens and the gameplay cycle is primarily composed of driving a short distance across a smaller map to a point of interest, picking through it for loot while navigating hazards that may be present, returning to the trunk to dump your haul and jumping back in and heading to the next spot, always staying aware of ever-changing road conditions and the implicit timer that will eventually force you to find your way elsewhere or ultimately activate the emergency-home switch that is your only actual way to safety. Like most survival genre games, you will bring back various raw materials such as glass and scrap that you can use to upgrade your technology! Unlike most survival games, however, this technology is almost entirely limited to upgrades for the car and the home garage; a few handheld goodies and personal upgrades can also be unlocked as you go along, but the main character of this game is not the player; it is the car and as you play the game you will experience that disconnect. The player has no visible limbs and handheld tools poke out into the field of vision with no clear connection to a human. Even in a mirror, you never see the player character. There is also no way for the player to communicate with the NPCs whose voices are heard through various radios, thus no voice actor and no voice for the one known only as "Driver". The car, however, is ever-present. It is your lifeline and your most powerful tool. The further you stray from the car the more its safety is threatened - and by proxy, your own. The gameplay loop is less about the survival of the driver, more about the survival (and growth) of the car. The storyline is present and decent, and does move the gameplay forward. You are expected to succeed and fail, and the game is prepared to accept both outcomes in all situations. It's delivered in a Borderlands 2 style "everyone uses the radio" style but with the added quirk that the player doesn't get a transmitter so it's listening only. The voice acting is great and the script is solid enough, but there won't be any "Sephiroth" moments or serious plot twists. It's... a story that supports the gameplay narrative. Unfortunately I must now cover the rough spots, because there are quite a few of them. First, out of the gate - controller support for the UI is JANKY. Sometimes the controller just loses focus on what you're doing or glitches into an unusable state in the menus, making it difficult to manage inventory (especially under duress while on the road). While driving and walking everything was great but the menus were always a struggle and I eventually ended up reaching for the mouse. I also found it impossible to clear the "new" notifiers in some of the menus. Next up: mid and late game fall off HARD. Game balance is a bit skewed; there are three types of energy to be collected that are required for all upgrades. Each type of energy can only be collected from their respective biomes, and to reach a biome you MUST travel through the previous one every time. This sounds fine until you look at the number of technologies that require energy from the middle biome. The amount of time you actually are capable of spending there is not proportional to the amount of energy you must retrieve from it to advance technologies. You will easily buy every one of the lowest-tier technologies as well as nearly all of the highest-tier ones you can unlock, but the middle-tier energy will always be scarce. Additionally, the devs thought it would be wise to include energy sinks in the late game - good! - and wouldn't you know it, the sinks are to use low-tier energy for vehicle maintenance and mid-tier energy for cosmetics. Not the other way around. So have fun hunting for that cosmetic you want. The actual biomes are more difficult, at first. But once you learn their quirks it's actually easier to navigate the last biome than it is the first on account of the map and hazard design. The middle biome, however, will always be frustrating due to two factors: first, the two major resources you need are never found in the same map; second, this is the zone that has water to drive through which is REALLY frustrating. You have to keep coming back for two resources that you can NEVER. EVER. EVER. FIND. ENOUGH. OF. Oh, no, neither one of those are the energy I just talked about. Mid zone just sucks! Then, when you finally get geared up and can tackle the last sequence - well, I did say the story is a story. This is where the story ends and it is as unsatisfying an ending as Borderlands 1. Sure, there's character growth and resolution and all that but the main character - the car - gets no such treatment. It's just there, serving you, or maybe you're just there serving it? That disconnect never goes away. There is side content - called 'Expeditions' - and they utterly destroy what semblance of game balance used to exist without them. While they have unique car parts that only are useful for Expeditions exclusively (which creates a new dimension of inventory management hell) they also allow the player to access late-game resources much earlier than what should be possible. The difficulty setting in-game does not affect Expeditions, either; they gradually increase in difficulty according to their own system which, in isolation, is great - but when combined with the main game creates conflicts of interest. If you're playing the game on the hardest difficulty, just jump in an Expedition and you basically get access to easy mode with all biomes quick to unlock and reduced penalties for failure. And that's where the final complaint comes in - while the ambience and storytelling are COMPELLING, the gameplay fails to bring that experience home. This game is GREAT on the highest difficulty - it's scary, it's stressful, it's high-pressure and high-adrenaline. Which is why it is utterly baffling that the default difficulty is so forgiving and the Expedition mode exists. They take all the scare factor away from a game whose primary mechanic is scare factor. Once you understand every road hazard in the game, nothing is scary anymore, it's just a skill test that is more endurance than performance. All that together, though, doesn't make this a bad game. It's a really GOOD game, actually. It's just not the best game, and that's okay. Gameplay 4/5 - Drive. Loot. Flee. Obsess over car. Be sad about glitches and imbalances. Graphics 5/5 - Top quality use of UE, assets are rock solid all around. Excellent map design. Audio 5/5 - The foley in this game is so rich and there wasn't room to mention the STELLAR soundtrack Story 3/5 - It's engaging but disappointing. Final verdict 4/5 - Good price, good times, good buy. For best results turn up the difficulty.

Tried to play this at least 10 times but always gave up at the garage because the game gave very little info on how to play. This time however I went further and discovered what a brilliant game this is. Yeah, a fun and immersive game and worth a buy. Just do yourself a favour and watch a guide on you-tube before you start just to give you the basics.

Amazing atmosphere ruined by suffocating, repetitive grind. Pacific Drive has one of the best atmospheres I’ve experienced recently, but unfortunately, the game quickly turns into a heavy, frustrating chore. After about 6 hours, the initial excitement wears off and you realize the gameplay loop is incredibly repetitive. To advance the story by just a few minutes, you are forced to spend hours on mindless trips just to farm materials, repair parts that constantly break, and micro-manage your car. If it weren't for cheats or accessibility options to eliminate the dead time and grind, I would have dropped it. I only recommend it to people who have a ton of time to waste and love extremely slow survival games. For everyone else, it becomes a drag very
