Even for $4.50 this game isn't worth it. Super buggy and the checkpoint system is terrible.

I bought this game because I’m a huge fan of the previous games in the series, but unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be finishing this one. The gunplay has zero impact and the combat is extremely disappointing. Enemies feel like nothing more than bullet sponges being thrown at you from every direction. Even the characters are weird and completely uninteresting, including the Boss himself. It’s hard to take any of them seriously. The story is also terrible and, to be honest, I can’t tell whether some of it was intentionally written as a joke. The characters feel completely disconnected from what made the previous games enjoyable. It also feels like the game is trying way too hard to meet some kind of diversity and inclusion quota, with LGBTQ+ representation being pushed into the game in a way that feels forced rather than natural. Saints Row is really dead. This game is a massive disappointment, especially for someone who loved the earlier games. I honestly cannot recommend it.

# Saints Row (2022) Review — There Was a Good Game Buried in Here Somewhere I don’t like *Saints Row* (2022), and I want to make that clear from the beginning. I don’t think it’s a misunderstood masterpiece, but I also don’t think it’s one of the worst games ever made. It’s functional, occasionally fun, and full of ideas that could have produced a good reboot. That’s what makes it frustrating. I kept seeing things where I thought, **“Okay, there’s something here.”** Then the game would underdevelop the idea, repeat it until it became boring, or bury it under writing that made me want to stare directly into the camera. ## The Story Is Serviceable The story is fine. You have rival gangs, betrayals, criminal activities, and the Saints gradually transforming from roommates into an actual criminal organization. The problem is that almost nothing really grabbed me. There aren’t many intimidating villains, emotional moments that genuinely land, or consequences that carry enough weight. Things happen. People get shot. Something explodes. Somebody says something quirky. Next mission. Older *Saints Row* games understood that the series could be ridiculous while still having meaningful relationships and serious moments. The reboot wants me to care about this group as a family, but it rarely gives those relationships enough depth to earn that investment. ## The Saints Are Dorks There’s no way around it. These Saints are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dorks. 😂 But surprisingly, I don’t completely hate that. Neenah, Kevin, Eli, and the Boss occasionally have believable chemistry. They have hobbies, inside jokes, and interests outside crime. Sometimes they’re genuinely endearing. The problem is that the dorkiness gets pushed so far that they stop feeling like convincing criminals. There needed to be contrast. Let Kevin be a shirtless idiot who loves cooking while still making me believe he survived The Idols. Let Eli’s business mentality crack when he realizes running a criminal empire requires violence. Let Neenah become more ruthless. Let the Boss start enjoying power. The skeleton of interesting characters is there. Unfortunately, the writers often trade nuance for another quirky joke. Eventually it starts feeling less like characterization and more like: **“Please like these people! Look how relatable they are!”** ## Criminal Ventures Were a Good Idea The Criminal Ventures system is one of my favorite ideas in the game. Instead of simply being told the Saints are becoming powerful, you place businesses around Santo Ileso and use them as fronts for criminal operations. That belongs in *Saints Row*. I enjoyed watching the empire gradually spread across the map. Unfortunately, the activities become repetitive. Drive somewhere. Complete activity. Drive somewhere else. Repeat. Each venture should have felt like a different criminal industry. Give me smuggling, weapons trafficking, street racing, insurance fraud, financial crime, and businesses that actually change how I interact with Santo Ileso. Instead, they frequently become another checklist. The system wasn’t bad. It just needed more ambition. ## That Secret Ending Is Cringe I understand that goofy bonus content is basically a *Saints Row* tradition. But there’s a difference between funny-stupid and: **Please make this stop.** 😂 After finishing the main storyline, I realized what I needed to do for the secret ending and decided I wasn’t doing all that. I looked it up on YouTube. I’m glad I did. The ending desperately tries to make the Saints’ friendship feel adorable and heartwarming. I mostly found it painfully cringe. That’s especially bad because these characters were supposed to carry the reboot forward. The game is saying: **“Here’s your new Saints family!”** Meanwhile I’m thinking: **I don’t want another game with these people.** ## The Characters Had Potential That’s the frustrating thing. I don’t think these characters were hopeless. Imagine if building the Saints actually changed them. Eli realizes violence can’t be managed like another business expense. Kevin questions how much of his identity comes from whichever group accepts him. Neenah becomes ruthless protecting what she built. The Boss starts enjoying power too much. Now you have actual character arcs. These aren’t simply friends starting a business. They’re friends becoming the leaders of a **criminal empire**, and those identities should occasionally conflict. Instead, their friendship remains mostly unquestioned. If *Saints Row* ever returns, I would rather see another fresh start than continue with this crew. ## Santo Ileso Looks Good but Feels Dead Visually, I like Santo Ileso. The Southwestern setting gives the game an identity, with deserts, casinos, industrial areas, suburbs, and some genuinely nice scenery. But the city rarely feels alive. This became especially noticeable because I streamed the game and had to mute the licensed music. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Without the music, there are moments where Santo Ileso feels like an abandoned movie set. There aren’t enough conversations, random events, background sounds, active businesses, or people reacting to the chaos around them. There’s a difference between a world having NPCs and a world feeling **alive**. Santo Ileso needed more pulse. ## Gameplay Is Decent Gameplay is where I’m least negative. Driving feels good. Gunplay is decent. Movement works. There’s a solid assortment of weapons and vehicles. The game doesn’t reinvent anything, but it didn’t necessarily need to. The problem is that the gameplay isn’t exceptional enough to carry everything else. Combat eventually becomes: Shoot enemies. Build meter. Use ability. Perform takedown. Repeat. I never hated controlling the game. Gameplay isn’t what killed *Saints Row* for me. It just isn’t strong enough to compensate for the uneven writing and underdeveloped world. ## The LARP Stuff Is Actually Fun The LARP content was something I expected to hate. And somehow? It’s actually pretty fun. 😂 Is it cringe? Absolutely. But it’s **intentional cringe**, so it works better than some of the main story’s humor. Everybody understands they’re doing something nerdy and ridiculous, and the game commits to the bit. The related DLC is enjoyable too if you liked those missions. Nothing incredible, but I had fun. ## Final Verdict Ultimately, *Saints Row* (2022) never completely figures out what it wants to be. It isn’t gritty enough to scratch the *Saints Row 2* itch, but it also isn’t outrageous enough to fully embrace *The Third* or *Saints Row IV*. It wants criminal empire building, relatable characters, friendship comedy, serious gang conflicts, emotional moments, LARP jokes, and ridiculous action. Those things can coexist. Previous games proved that. But this reboot never gets the balance right. For me, *Saints Row* (2022) falls somewhere between a **4.5 and a 5.5 out of 10**. Basically a **5/10 game**. I don’t hate it, and I don’t regret playing it. There are genuinely good ideas here. But I constantly found myself imagining the better version: deeper character arcs, more varied Criminal Ventures, a livelier Santo Ileso, and Saints who become more complicated as their power grows. If you can find it cheap? Sure. Grab it on sale. At full price? I can’t recommend it. The saddest thing about *Saints Row* (2022) isn’t that it was hopeless. **It’s that it wasn’t.** You can see the potential everywhere. You can also see how much of it was left sitting on the table. **Final Rating: 4.5–5.5/10** Not an abomination. Not unplayable. Just painfully average. And for a franchise as memorable as *Saints Row*? That might be worse.

Still has bugs 4 years after release. The world is visually great but the lack of enterable interiors and population density is not great. Combat is still bland.

Do not expect it to live up to the legacy of the original Saints Row series. Go into it expecting mindless sandbox fun, mute the cringe dialogue, and you will have a good time.

Don’t let all the negative reviews scare you away - Saints Row is a genuinely fun sandbox with plenty of chaotic action and ridiculous moments. The story isn’t its strongest feature, but the game is much more enjoyable when you treat it like an open-world playground rather than a narrative-driven experience. It’s definitely worth picking up when it goes on sale.
