The start of a monolith and yet, the game nobody has played. Beyond the shoddy 90s coding, the bugs, the text typos that require mods to be fixed, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DOS performance that also requires a mod to be fixed (and that mod requires a tweak to actually fix a sound issue it causes), the overly gigantic maps for the dungeons that will lead you to the main quest dungeon, the side content being very rare to come across and honestly kind of ass, the artifact limitation through class restrictions or the inability to only carry more than 1 (without abusing a certain exploit), this game is surprisingly capable. It is frustrating, to be sure, in that 90s way, where enemies will massacre you with random damage or be simply too strong. The game ignoring AC rating (even with -30 AC on a thief character, they'll still hit you far more often than you do, even if your Agility and Luck stats are over 90), the potions of resist seldom affecting that damage, the Elder Scrolls classic of low max health if you don't invest into Endurance and the game being borderline unplayable unless you have a way to cast Spell Reflection (either via a spell or magic item, like the Warlock's Ring), it is a cool game I think more people should experience. At the end of the day, it is a cool dungeon crawler, simplistic in design, that makes you appreciate the strides the series gave from Daggerfall onward - and still, Arena's lore and locations are interesting, even if the gameplay becomes too frustrating at times. 6/10, will play this game a third time

I thought The Elder Scrolls: Arena was just another old RPG that people praised because they grew up with it. I was wrong. The graphics are dated. The interface is complicated. The world looks nothing like the massive fantasy worlds we're used to today. And somehow, none of that mattered. Because somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing an old game. I started seeing a world. There are dungeons that feel endless, towns that feel mysterious, and an overwhelming sense that there's something waiting just beyond the next door, the next road, or the next dark corridor. The game doesn't hold your hand. It gives you a world and basically says, "Good luck." And somehow, that makes every discovery feel more meaningful. What I love most is the sense of scale. Even with its age, Arena feels ambitious. It feels like the beginning of something much bigger than itself. I've played RPGs with incredible graphics, cinematic stories, and worlds filled with thousands of carefully designed details. I don't remember most of them. I'll remember Arena. I'll remember getting lost. I'll remember the dungeons. I'll remember wondering whether I was actually supposed to be here. Some games show you an amazing world. Arena makes you feel like you've stumbled into one. 100% recommended.

The Elder Scrolls: Arena is one of those games where I have to remind myself that it came out in 1994. This is the first Elder Scrolls game, and even at that age it was already trying to give me a huge fantasy world to explore. I play as a prisoner who is freed by Ria Silmane and sent across Tamriel to recover the pieces of the Staff of Chaos and rescue Emperor Uriel Septim VII from Jagar Tharn. The story is fairly straightforward, but the freedom I get outside the main quest is what makes Arena interesting to me. The character creation is still one of the things I appreciate most. I can choose my race and class, build my stats and decide whether I want to focus more on weapons, magic or a mixture of both. The spell creation system is especially impressive for its age because I can combine different effects to make my own spells. I like systems like this because they give me more control over how I want to build my character instead of simply handing me a fixed set of abilities. The equipment and progression also give me a good reason to explore dungeons and keep improving my character. The size of the world is probably the most impressive thing about Arena. Tamriel is huge, with hundreds of towns, dungeons and other locations, and I can travel through wilderness areas rather than being restricted to a small collection of levels. Fast travel is basically essential because of how enormous the world is, but I still like knowing that there is so much space available. The towns and important locations have more handcrafted detail, while much of the wilderness and dungeon content uses procedural generation. That gives the game an enormous sense of scale, although it also means that not every place I visit feels equally interesting. The combat is where I have the most mixed feelings. Melee uses mouse movements to swing my weapon, which is an interesting idea, but it can feel awkward by modern standards. Magic gives me more flexibility, especially when I start making my own spells, but the menus and general interface take some getting used to. The game is also extremely unforgiving early on. The starting dungeon can be brutal, and I have to learn quickly that charging into everything is not always the best idea. Once my character becomes stronger, things get more manageable, but getting there can take some patience. I also think Arena shows its age in ways that are impossible to ignore. The interface is old fashioned, the graphics are extremely basic and the procedural dungeons can become repetitive. A lot of the world feels empty compared with later Elder Scrolls games, and the NPCs do not have the same level of interaction that I would expect from Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim. The quests can also feel fairly basic, with a lot of them involving travelling somewhere, entering a dungeon and retrieving something. I can appreciate the ambition behind it, but I would be lying if I said the age of the game never gets in the way of enjoying it. What keeps me interested is how much freedom Bethesda managed to put into the game. I can ignore the main quest for a while, take on smaller quests, explore dungeons, improve my character, experiment with spells and simply wander around Tamriel. For a 1994 RPG, that is genuinely impressive. It also helps that the game is now free, so I do not have to spend anything to experience the beginning of The Elder Scrolls. The current release is still the original game rather than a modern remake, so I have to approach it with the right expectations. Overall, The Elder Scrolls: Arena is much rougher than the later games in the series, but I think it deserves credit for laying down so many of the ideas that would eventually define The Elder Scrolls. The huge world, character creation, spell making, open exploration and dungeon crawling give me plenty to appreciate, especially when I remember that this was released in 1994. At the same time, the awkward combat, dated interface, repetitive procedural content and harsh early game make it difficult for me to rate it alongside the strongest RPGs I have played. I see it more as an ambitious and historically important RPG that I can respect as much as I enjoy playing it. Rating: 6.9/10

I am really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad at this game. Dungeon crawlers and grinding randomly generated quests are generally just not my cup of tea but I can absolutely see dungeon crawler fans enjoying this. As someone who likes lore and world design telling a story etc, I was a bit disappointed by every town looking sort of the same. Yeah, there's a lot of places and you can actually go to all of Tamriel, but when every culture looks sort of the same, then the map size doesn't mean much to me. Kind of hilarious that they had enough time to fully crap the gladiator thing and change the main story but not enough time to reprint promotional material to change the title. The development on this must've been crazy

Still holds up as a very fun game! Like Ultima Underworld with better combat and towns, but a less authored world.
