- Nier Reincarnation (IOS/ ANDROID)

NieR:Automata is one of the greatest games ever made, if not the greatest Playing NieR only once is like hearing a joke all the way up to the punchline, but not the punchline itself. I knew it was important to play the game a few times to get the full experience, but I cannot stress this enough: you absolutely MUST play the game multiple times to even experience what it's trying to do. The first playthrough is just the setup. Other games are basically begging you to play them again, but they're such a slog because you already know what's going to happen. New Game+ is usually just the same game again with bigger numbers or some new little variation, artificially padding a game that is already over. Meanwhile NieR is like, “Oh, you thought we were done after you finished the game twice already? BANG, let me recontextualize the entire story and your understanding of it real quick.” “You thought we were done after you finished it four times? Well here's this entirely new, awesome thing that you've never seen before in your previous playthroughs.” How the f*ck do Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames keep getting away with it and keep us hooked for so long? And it doesn't stop there, it keeps going. It's like they keep on adding to the joke; just as you thought you've heard all of it and are recovering, they say another banger line and you burst into laughter all over again, holding your sides from the pain of laughing so hard. Okay, I might have gone too far with the joke analogy, but the point is that they keep on surprising you every step of the way. I had my jaw physically drop at like 20 different points throughout my experience because they still had something else up their sleeve. The first playthrough is very video gamey. It's cool, you're impressed, and you can easily come away thinking you've played a really good game. Not mindblowing, but really good. In a weird sense, it almost feels like a late 2000s, early 2010s video game. Pretty cool, but it doesn't even scratch the surface. Then you start playing again on Route B and get the tiniest glimpse of where this game is going and you're like, “Oh okay, this is gonna be a masterpiece.” And then it just keeps going for the next few playthroughs, at almost every turn. Hell, even when you're sitting there at the absolute end thinking, “Okay, it's gotta be over by now, right?”, the game somehow still manages to leave you in awe one last time. This is one of the main reasons I think NieR:Automata is the greatest game of all time. Because it isn't just giving you more content. It keeps changing what the content you've already experienced means. Again. And again. And again. It's not gameplay in parallel with a story, it's a story through the gameplay itself. What you're doing as the player is the thing that is communicating the idea. A section in the DLC content made this especially obvious to me. I won't spoil what happens, but the way the game makes you feel like the character you're playing as, while simultaneously doing something deeply philosophical with the gameplay itself, made me realize just how deeply they understood the medium as an artform. And then there's the music. I don't even know how a soundtrack can be this iconic. It's not just that the songs are beautiful; they completely define the atmosphere of the places you're in. When I think about the locations in this game, I don't just remember what they looked like; I remember what they sounded like, and because of that cohesion, what they felt like. The Desert, the Amusement Park, the Factory, the City Ruins — they all have their own emotional identity because of the music. The soundtrack doesn't just "accompany" the world; it becomes part of your memory of the world. Keiichi Okabe, you are probably the best composer in the industry at this point, I don't even know who could compete. NieR:Automata ran so Clair Obscur could walk (but I'm not here to have that debate and piss people off lol). I'm also an absolute nut for philosophy, and the entire game was basically a vehicle for it. It doesn't tell you what you should think with obtuse, pretentious vocabulary. It makes you play through those experiences, leading you to grasp them on a much deeper level than mere intellectual understanding. It's not even hiding this obsession with philosophy that much; half the characters in the game are a reference to a philosopher or philosophy in general. Hell, 2B or not to be? Ring any bells? Suffice to say that it is one of the most profound games ever made, probably THE most profound. And the craziest thing is that none of this feels separate. The constant surprises, the gameplay, the music, the philosophy - it all comes together because the game has such an insanely deep understanding of what games can actually do. I don't wanna attribute this entirely to Yoko Taro, but wow. Yoko Taro has such an insanely deep understanding of game design that it both frightens me and makes me happy that someone that innovative and daring can work at that scale and be praised for it. As pretentious as it sounds, this is the kind of game I would want to make if I had that budget. Maybe it wouldn't be as Japanese, and probably less of an arcade shooter, but the soul of the game - the philosophical density combined with an absolute mastery of game design and phenomenal music - is exactly the kind of soul I would want in my own games. 2017 didn't fully appreciate this game, but I genuinely believe the future will remember it not only as a game ahead of its time, but as a timeless game.

PROS + Beautiful and distinctive visual design. + Fast, satisfying combat with plenty of customization. + Incredible soundtrack and voice acting. + Emotional story with memorable characters. + Great use of different perspectives and playthroughs. + Deep and thought-provoking story that keeps revealing new layers. + Strong themes of identity, loss, humanity, and existence. + Excellent balance between mystery and philosophical storytelling. CONS - Open world can feel quite empty. - Many side quests boil down to fetch quests. - Some story sections have to be replayed, which can feel tiring. VERDICT NieR:Automata starts as a stylish and satisfying action RPG, but its biggest strength lies in how much depth it gradually reveals beneath its surface. The combat is fast and enjoyable, while the incredible soundtrack and voice acting make the experience even more memorable. However, the story is where the game truly shines. The further you play, the more you realize that its characters, world, and conflicts aren't as simple as they initially seem. Different perspectives and playthroughs continuously add new context, changing the way you understand what you've experienced before. What makes the story especially memorable is how naturally it explores themes of identity, loss, humanity, and existence. It doesn't simply present these ideas as something to think about, it uses the game's structure and interactivity to make them feel more personal. Even after finishing the game, some of its themes and questions can linger in your mind. It's a deeply memorable action RPG with an ambitious story, strong atmosphere, and themes that give the entire experience a meaning far beyond its combat and exploration. 5/5

Great unique game, but narratively overhyped. 7/10 NieR Automata is an open world post-apocalyptic RPG featuring one of the best soundtracks in gaming history. The game covers themes such as existentialism and grief. Story: Your mission is to secure Earth and rid it of alien machine lifeforms that invaded long ago. There are subtle mentions to the events that happened in the previous game, but you don't have to play it to understand this game, Its effectively a standalone title. There's multiple endings, but only 5 of them are canon. Ending E is the most satisfying conclusion I've seen to a game. POD-042 IS GOATED! The Flaws - Pacing & World Design: The biggest issues with this game are its world design and pacing. It's quite a time investment to reach the best segments of the story because you're forced to replay the game a second time doing the same events you did first time around, only from a different perspective. There's also no motive or much reward for exploring, the world is dull. The playable characters don't undergo any meaningful development until late game so its difficult to care for them early on. Side Quests: There's a total of 60 of them. They're mostly garbage fetch quests, only about 10 of them matter for story elements and good rewards. Gameplay: The combat is repetitve, but its enough to carry the game. Each controllable character has their own unique skills and movesets. You can use different weapon types keeping the combat fairly fresh. You can also install chips for attack buffs and upgrade your weapons using resources gained from destroyed machines. Summary: Cool story game, but its quite a time investment to get to the good parts. Characters and side quests are not interesting, and the exploration is basically nonexistent.

def one of the the best games ive ever played i actually never planned on finishing it, played the intro when it came out and cod got in the way but recently i played drakengard 1 and rlly loved the story looked into it more online and was surprised to see it was a prequel to nier, so im proud to say my first yoko taro game was drakengard because it made me appreciate this game so much more, like so much u have no idea i LOVE this game. the world the characters the tone and message of the game is very beautiful yet a little empty. so much of drakengards dna is in this game especially sections like the forest kingdom the non stop slaughtering. the pacing. if u have read berserk and watched neon genesis evangelion ur gonna see alot of influence in these games from those works, especially the pacing which i never see people talk about but something ive noticed his games can be one thing u think it is and than get deep into it and the game has become a completely different animal very much like in berserk during the golden age and than the eclipse hits and all of sudden ur reading a completely different story yoko taro very much uses this same style of writing in his games and it just HITS so so well bro so well, his writing is unique to video games and its my favorite style he doesnt make happy video games. so much of the media we consume is the same ol cliche hero has a problem hero must overcome said problem, hero gets the girl and defeats the evil and boom happy ending credits roll, yoko taro doesnt make video games like this the problem may just get worse and worse without a glimmer of hope u dont know if his game will leave u with any feeling of catharsis when its all over and i love it, very similar to like watch requiem for a dream where it just keep hitting u over and over again, these are the stories i live for, these are the stories we remember the ones that we will think about for weeks and remember for years to come. for a video game to have this style truly really is a gem. the music is god tier every bit of it the whole game could suck and the music could still make up for it, its absolutely beautiful. if u wish to play this game i would recommend 1. watching neon genesis evangelion 2. read berserk and than play drakengard 1 the pacing the weird twists and turns the empty hopeless feeling the games give u will be so much more appreciated. i cant wait to play replicant as its a direct sequel to the ending of drakengard. if any woman look like a yorha android who see this plz hmu. yeah i have nothing more to say this isnt a video game its art. art we will probably never see again as games suck nowadays, i just wish it was a little longer. yoko taro is a genius, i love staring at 2bs thighs and yeah.......for the glory of mankind
