X4: Foundations

I love space sims, but this is by far the most unapproachable in existence. I feel as if the franchise has a loyal playerbase that is used to how it works and the devs probably don't get as much feedback from newer players, but I've tried twice to get into X4 because I like the concept but it's so difficult to navigate the game that I always end up giving up pretty quickly. I did do the basic tutorials, I did the intermediate ones as needed, but I simply cannot navigate the incredibly obtuse UI and controls. I understand the concept of a learning curve but there is no learning curve here. A good learning curve features easy to learn, hard to master. Here we have a learning wall and you need to climb it right from the start. For the people that learned this game and mastered its systems, I salute you. For the devs, your game is seriously unapproachable to people who are new to the X series. Your UI is a nightmare, ship control feels clunky, and your onboarding process doesn't exist. Your game has a lot going on, so for a new player it feels like a small town kid being dropped into downtown Tokyo with mediocre Japanese skills.

This game does so many things right, and is clearly groundbreaking for a lot of systems. I find myself talking about it a lot to my friends, but at the end of the day I don’t recommend it to them, and as such it’s only fair that I leave this a “Do NOT Recommend” review. But hopefully I can shed light on what this game does right and what it does wrong. The Good: - This is the best sandbox I’ve ever played. Factions will actually grow and conquer, and will grow and conquer faster with your help. It’s the first game where the world feels truly dynamic. - I also love how you can start as a broke pilot, and over time snowball your cash to not just owning bigger ships, but having entire fleets and stations working for you. - The combat has its moments of satisfaction (but also major downsides). But being able to target individual components like shield generators feels great; really brings me back to X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter. The Bad: - Friendly Fire is too easy, even with Beam weapons, and so many times I am trying to escort a friendly NPC only to have them turn hostile on me because I or one of my fleet ships accidentally damaged it somehow. This is absolutely game-breaking. - Fighter combat feels awful. The best term I’ve seen used for it by the community is “jousting”. Basically the AI speeds at you, fires, and then goes into warp mode away from you. Flies really far, turns around, and comes back. So instead of a dogfight, it feels like you are rubber banding against each-other and it takes forever to kill anyone. As soon as I could I stopped flying small fighters and only engaged in larger cruiser fights. - Anything with a spacesuit needs to be removed. Everything. It is the absolute worst aspect of this game, because there is no flight assist and you just play human pinball. It is absolutely rage-inducing, and every time a mission says “Get into your space suit” I want to quit. - The Missions are so poorly explained. I ended up having to google search pretty much everything. No mission description or objective makes sense. Luckily, there are tons of YouTube videos explaining how to get through them, but they are just a painful chore, not rewarding content. I thought maybe the expansions would get better, but not really. I feel like all of the negatives could be easily fixed, but the game is ancient now so I doubt they ever will be. So I can’t suggest people try this game. But wow, there really is some good stuff too, so if it’s on a deep sale and you have time and money to burn, it’s worth goofing around in. But if it ever tells you to get into your spacesuit, ignore it and go do something else.

The best space sandbox game. Don’t pay attention to reviews from people who’ve played less than 5 hours. The game is indeed challenging at first and it won’t guide you with a hand (though it sometimes tries and even succeeds at times). The game’s true charm unfolds gradually - it’s a true sandbox where you choose your own activities and ultimate goals. If you want, follow the faction storylines; if you want - play as a tycoon building massive complexes and setting up supply chains. If you want - feel like an admiral, build fleets, and make war against factions you don’t like, or against the global threat - the Xenons. Or, if you prefer, combine these elements and use the map of the universe as a chessboard, influencing absolutely every aspect of a fully living universe that exists independently of your actions and your presence in any given system but always reacting on them. Conflicts break out regularly - sectors can shift from one warring faction to another; in some places, the Xenons are methodically wiping out all life, while in others, the races are joining forces to fight back and launch counterattacks. Pirates are a doing they job (making your *** burn sometimes) demanding pilotes drop their cargo, the Khaak's harass miners in the asteroid fields - in short, life goes on as usual. All of this is complemented by excellent soundtracks that capture the atmosphere of both specific sectors and the factions that inhabit them, along with beautiful backgrounds. The most important thing is that you really get a sense of scale here. From an S-class scout to an XL-class carrier and a massive space station - you can truly experience that “wow” factor and feel like a speck of dust in the vastness of space. The combat and flight mechanics here are some sort of unique - you won’t find here a true sim mechanics like in Elite: Dangerous - but you get used to them quickly, and if you learn to turn off the flight assists at the right moment, they can be incredibly thrilling. On top of that, it’s incredibly cool to watch fleet battles, where fighters wage their own war by taking out enemy S-M ships, bombers break through enemy lines and, closing in on a large target, unleash a barrage of missiles, and the turrets of large ships leisurely fire heavy-caliber salvos at their targets - it all looks incredibly spectacular and memorable even though the graphics here are more like a 7 out of 10. The game also has a... complex interface that can be hard to figure out at first, but eventually you’ll realize it’s like an airplane’s instrument panel—there’s a lot of things, but everything is in its place. And when you get used to it you also realize it’s actually quite convenient. 9.0 introduced diplomatic features that make the universe feel even more alive - factions can now constantly form and break alliances, change their attitudes toward neighbors, and wage wars. And this is despite the fact that you have the opportunity to fundamentally change the course of certain factions (once you've completed their main story) - you can reconcile them and unite them into a single conglomerate, or, conversely, intensify their internal strife. Your relationship with the factions will also be clearly evident beyond the well-known ship purchase permits. If your reputation is high, you can count on assistance from their fleets (including capital ships) which will patrol the borders of your sectors or areas where your fleet has come under attack. Conversely, if your relationship drops below a certain threshold, you can be sure that the faction will certainly try to destroy your assets and may even come after them from a great distance. So... this is a true sandbox game, and you should treat it exactly like a theater where you choose your own path. Give the game a little more time, and if you like this genre, you're sure to love it and the game itself will pleasantly surprise you.

Just incredible, really scratches a certain itch for me as someone into space sims. The amount of choice and agencey you have as a player in this game is second to none. Started as a humble fighter piolet, to commanding an entire armada that is currently destorying empires. Its like there are two games in one, theres the space pioleting where you can dogfight, trade, ect, and then an 'RTS like' overview of the entire universe where you can command ships like a traditional strategey game. Once you witness a space battle that you started on the deck of your capital ship, because you implemented a blocade on a jump gate in an attempt to starve out the faction you're in a trade war with, you dont want to play any other space sim after that. Ive played starcitizen, elite dangerous, freelancer and x2, and this game wipes them all. I will say its also incredibly challenging getting a hand on all the systems, but its worth it. oh and the soundtrack is god tier.

When I was a kid of about 6-8 years old, I used to play a game with my friends in primary school where we would all draw spaceships, planets and stations on pieces of paper and then come together to "duke" it out, with the best drawn biggest fleet winning. If you've done a comparable thing at all as a kid, X4: Foundations is a game you will absolutely love. It would have been unimagenable to my younger self that a game would come to exist where you could have this level of freedom and customization to really create a personalized space empire in full 3D. X4 is a unique game in the sense that no other space sim does quite the same thing. You've got games where you can build, mine and create your empire, but X4 also seamlessly simulates the entire rest of the galaxy. Even if you're not looking all sorts of stuff is happening with the other factions all the time. That said, the game is not without its failings: * The learning curve is huge and the tutorials fail woefully to prepare you (even though it's a bit better than X2 or X3, which I could never get into). You should be prepared to spend several hours on youtube watching videos on how things actually function and how to actually set up your controls even. The devs in my book should at least provide a clear overview of all the basic commands and controls and how to manipulate your empire. Preferably through story, which brings us to the next point. *Story: there are storyline quests in the game and some are quite engaging and interesting. The problem here is that there is the potential for a lot more depth, but the game often fails to deliver through the introduction of grindy and archaïc missions. The factions are interesting, let me meet more characters and have in depth choices and converstations with them, explore the lore further. What is NOT interesting, and in fact infuriating, is tasking me to contruct massive fleets or stations for them costing hundreds of millions of credits. Then when you complete the long process of doing so, you instantly lose control of said assets with it being unclear if the AI even uses them. Sometimes the missions are also oddly specific for a sandbox game. Tasking you to put a certain thing like a sattelite in a very specific location, even if your empire already has 10 advanced sattelites and full coverage. Don't even get me started about EVA missions. It's SUPER cool that you can exit your ship, but this aspect needs massive improvement. *Empty stations: it's cool that you can walk around stations, but there's always only the same kind of things to see and do. Let us customize our character and include interesting NPC's to talk and perhaps recruit and train. Even building a casino or spaceport bar is a sad and lifeless affair. *Overly grindy aspects: you really notice that this is a game updated for decades with a *hardcore* membership sometimes. Some aspects like leveling crew, visiting traders to get specific stuff etc. are just nut fun for me. Thankfully there's a vibrant modding community to smooth everything out. In conclusion however, the few janky and grindy bits absolutely don't mean I won't recommend this game. If you have a little personal space fantasy hidden in your personality, this is it for you. Buy it to support these amazing devs!

Had a quest that required me to find a certain item and deliver it to an awaiting carrier... except my ship was too big to dock... Sooo instead I sent a request to the nearest friendly shipyard to fabricate a small courier ship and have that sucker find and deliver the items while I hunted space robots. 10/10 for letting me delegate annoying fetch quests.
